Lititz recCenter Aims To Help Families Get Moving By Ann Mead Ash
During the fall, Simon Ababou, fitness director at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, had an idea to motivate children and their parents to help each other work toward a better fitness level. Ababou introduced the idea to three rec center instructors. “They said, ‘Let’s do it,’” recalled Ababou. The result will be a new program, recFamilyFit, offered each Monday from 5:15 to 6 p.m. from Jan. 7 to Feb. 18. The class will be open to parents and grandparents and to children ages 5 to 12. The class will be designed to help reduce stress, and the program will offer weekly options for other rec center offerings. According to Ababou, instructors Kira Talbot, Elsbeth West, and Jamie
Hoffman will start the Monday class with relaxation, yoga, stretching, Pilates, and breathing techniques to help the children and parents release stress. After 15 minutes of stress reduction, the class will turn to physical activities like fitness games, which may include the use of small weights, hula hoops, and other equipment. “We want to get parents and children to work out together,” explained Ababou, who added that other optional activities will be included with the class. Among these will be a Zumba party night on the second Friday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m. and a Les Mills Virtual Sh’Bam class each Friday from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. Children ages 7 to 12 who participate in recFamilyFit will also be eligible to take Boxing for Kids, which is held each Tuesday from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Participants will also receive See Lititz recCenter pg 2

Power Packs - Serving And Growing Pure Entertainment LBC To Stage “Bye Bye Birdie”
By Ann Mead Ash
Back in 2004, Joan Espenshade noticed the large number of children waiting for breakfast outside a Lancaster city school on a Monday morning. Recognizing that these children may not be receiving adequate nutrition over the weekend, she founded Power Packs Project to help meet the nutritional needs of those children between Friday and Monday over the school year. The project sought to educate families as well by providing a recipe using low-cost ingredients that they could learn to replicate. Today, Power Packs Project has grown to help feed 1,600 families weekly 32 weeks per year by distributing ingredients for one low-cost meal in most Lancaster County school districts, but Jennifer Thompson, who became executive director in May, has identified several challenges Power Packs faces See Power Packs pg 4

“What I love about ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ is that you can come to this show and just enjoy,” said Heather Grayberg, who will both direct and choreograph the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) winter presentation. “(‘Birdie’ is) super fun, kitschy, loud, bright, and silly in a lot of ways.” “Bye Bye Birdie” is a Tony Award-winning musical that first played on Broadway in 1960. LBC will stage the show in the Good Shepherd Chapel, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Fridays, Jan. 18 and 25, at 7 p.m.; Saturdays, Jan. 19 and 26, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. “Birdie,” which has more than 30 members in the cast, is the story of
