Fair Posts Baby Parade, Baking Contest Winners

The 2025 Solanco Fair was held from Sept. 17 to 19 at the Solanco Fairgrounds. After withstanding some drizzly weather for the parade on Sept. 17, fairgoers enjoyed sunshine for the remainder of the fair, enjoying an assortment of activities and contests, like various baking contests and the Baby Parade.

The Baked Products Section at the 2025 Solanco Fair had a total of 164 exhibitors with 345 entries, and 35 of those exhibitors participated in the annual baking contests. Four bakers were selected in these special competitions on Sept. 17.

The Homemade Chocolate Cake Contest is sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF), and the winner this year was Bethany Osborne of Holtwood with her chocolate marble s’mores layer cake.

The PSACF also sponsors the Blue Ribbon Apple Pie contest, and the winner for 2025 was Neve Haun of Lancaster.

Pennsylvania’s Incredible Angel Food Cake contest was once again co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Egg Farmers and the PSACF. Lauren Osborne from Holtwood had the winning entry this year with her strawberry angel food cake.

Nine-year-old Annelise Hrovath of Millersville won the Cookies, Brownies and Bars Junior Baking contest with her never box brownies again. This contest is sponsored by the PA Preferred program, which is part of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and encourages youths to find locally grown or produced ingredients for their baking.

All four of these certified contest winners are eligible to enter the Pennsylvania State Farm Show in January of 2026, where first-place winners can receive prize money.

Additionally, the 2025 Solanco Fair Baby Parade was held on Sept. 18. Winners are as follows: In the Walking Division, first place for Best Characterization

Supporting Girls and Women With Dignity

Sarah Zeitler wants to get people talking about some of life’s most basic necessities while making sure everyone has access to them.

The Lancaster woman is the local face of I Support the Girls, a national nonprofit that collects bras, underwear and feminine hygiene products for girls and women in need. What began for Zeitler as a simple search for a place to donate gently used bras has grown into a mission she calls both energizing and deeply personal.

“I’m very focused on changing the conversation,” says Zeitler, who has two teenage daughters, ages 14 and 16. “Why don’t we talk about pads and tampons? ... I tell my girls, ‘You don’t have to be embarrassed by this topic.’ I want to help people who don’t have access to products most of us take for granted.”

Zeitler discovered I Support the Girls in late 2024. When she realized Lancaster no longer had an active chapter, she quickly stepped up. The hyperlocal aspect drew her in.

“I like that the bras you’re giving are not going to women in another state,” she said. “They’re going right back to local women. I also wanted to be sure these bras were going to women in need who were going to use them.”

I Support the Girls began 10 years ago when founder Dana Marlowe started the organization in the Washington, D.C., area. From one donated bra, the organization has grown to more See Dignity pg 4

Lexi and Hailey won first place in the Nursery Rhyme, Fairy Tale, or Storybook category of the Vehicle on Wheels Division for their “Frozen”themed entry.
Archer Lutz earned first place in the Miscellaneous category of the Vehicle on Wheels Division for “On Top of Spaghetti.”

PennDOT Posts Innovations Challenge

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites high school students from across the state to participate in this year’s PennDOT Innovations Challenge, which encourages students to use their problem-solving, creative, and strategic thinking abilities to solve real-world transportation challenges in a competition among their peers. The Innovations Challenge is open to all students in grades nine through 12, regardless of their school’s learning model.

For this year’s challenge, students are asked to develop a concept for the use of artificial intelligence in work zones to dramatically improve safety for work crews and road users. The concept must outline how PennDOT can use smarter systems to prevent accidents and protect people. The concept should also take into consideration cost-benefit information, statewide deployment implications, and public outreach.

Regional Innovations Challenge winners will be selected and invited to present their solutions to the PennDOT secretary and a panel of judges, which will determine the statewide winner. For this year’s challenge, PennDOT is partnering with several organizations to provide a monetary award to the statewide winning team. These organizations include the Transportation Policy and Education Foundation, an educational arm of the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors (APC); the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania (ACEC/ PA); the Mid-Atlantic Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (MASITE); and the Intelligent Transportation Society of Pennsylvania (ITSPA).

For complete details, visit www.penndot.gov/ innovation and click on the Innovations Challenge link. The submission deadline is Friday, Jan. 30, 2026.

than 40 million products donated over the past decade.

Locally, Zeitler collects donations and works with partners including Second Grace, which supports young single mothers, and River’s Place, a free clothing closet at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim Township. She has also begun reaching out to local doctor’s offices, especially plastic surgeons, to encourage women undergoing breast

surgery to donate their gently used bras.

At her job as a product manager at Armstrong, she regularly collects donations. And thanks to I Support the Girls national partnerships with major retailers like Victoria’s Secret, she receives shipments of new bras to distribute.

“I like to make sure there is diversity in what I’m giving away,” she said.

“I want to have everything from sports bras to special occasions, from tween

sizes to larger sizes.”

Her work has become a family effort. Her daughters, August and Citizen, pitch in with everything from social media posts to sorting donations. They’ve also joined her at training sessions offered by the national nonprofit, turning the project into a shared mission of empowerment.

This year, Zeitler received a grant to create a permanent collection site in Lancaster. While she’s still searching for the right location, she continues to collect donations at her home and through temporary community partners. This fall, for example, a collection bin will be available at Pocket Books, 903 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, through October.

For Zeitler, the work is about more than just distributing products;

it’s about starting conversations that too often remain in the shadows.

“I’m passionate about women’s causes,” she said. “We have very unique needs. Men don’t have to worry about having the right bras to go to work and feel professional or feel confident in their own skin. This is something I’m very passionate about, and doing this work literally energizes me.”

She notes that her involvement in the project has raised her own awareness about community needs.

“Think about victims of domestic violence,” she said. “The police often collect undergarments as evidence, and these women are sent home without underwear. ... Girls literally miss school because they don’t have the proper hygiene products.”

It’s also important to Zeitler that donations stay in the local area.

“Everything that comes into us, whether it’s money, hygiene products or bras, it all goes right to women and girls right here in Lancaster,” she said. “This is really a boots-on-the-ground organization, and we are helping right where it’s needed.”

The City of Lancaster, in partnership with Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS), is seeking an evergreen to serve as the city’s Christmas tree in Penn Square this holiday season. Property owners with a healthy conifer at least 30 feet tall and full on all sides who plan to remove the tree are encouraged to contact the city.

Interested property owners should reach out to city arborist Rick Anderer at 717-291-4846 or randerer@cityoflancasterpa. gov and include a name,

Hempfield Is Home to Worldwide Nonprofit

A nonprofit organization with a global reach has its headquarters in Hempfield.

On Sept. 24, BCM International (Bible-Centered Ministries) offices moved from Granite Run to Estelle Drive in Mountville.

“We’re in what I call a growth season in the organization and adding key team members,” president Rick Rhoads said. “We outgrew the space we had. There’s good stuff happening.”

BCM International is a faith-based nongovernment organization (NGO) that seeks to reach children and strengthen churches globally in 56 countries, Rhoads said. Through camping ministry, orphanages, schools, disaster relief, and church ministry, BCM International serves approximately 3.5 million people on a yearly basis.

“BCM International was the original Bible club movement and started 89 years ago in Philadelphia,” said Rhoads, who has been the group’s president for three years. It was founded by Bessie Traber, who was a missionary to the Philippines. “Home on furlough, she was working with some children, and a child asked her what she did in the Philippines,” said Rhoads. “She told him, and then he said, ‘Why can’t you do that here?’ And that’s how it started.”

Rhoads noted that in 89 years, BCM International has become involved with 56 countries and has 42

camps in 32 countries, as well as 5,000 churches, including ones in India, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar, as well as all throughout Africa.

“Our churches and our camp ministries, like all of our ministries, are centered on the work of Jesus in the New Testament and disciple-making principles,” Rhoads said. “Our passion is all about making disciples, empowering leaders who in turn can go make other disciples. At the end of the day, we have almost 17,000 workers, so it’s one of the larger Christian organizations on the planet. But we’re tucked in here in Lancaster County as the home base.”

BCM International’s primary focus is on reaching children. Second is strengthening the church. BCM International also has orphanages, provides disaster relief services, and offers kindergarten through 12th grade schools, he said.

BCM International holds camps and Bible clubs in Lancaster County. “We look at each culture and each country and ask what it needs,” Rhoads said. “We look around here and say, ‘There’s endless amounts of churches. There’s no need for another church here.’ But there is a need for camps that can service churches and strengthen the church. There’s also a need for Bible clubs where we can connect to children for schools. That’s what we do primarily here in the states.”

In the past year, BCM International has expanded to Ecuador, Argentina, South Sudan, and São Tomé and Príncipe. It has created a marketing department and hired a new director of marketing and communications to move into the digital age.

“I think our heartbeat is for just disciple, disciple making, and empowering national leaders in their countries to lead,” said Rhoads. “Though we oversee the vision and provide accountability globally, we’re all about empowering local and national leaders to develop teams and to lead. We really want this to be something that, in Brazil, we want it to be a Brazilian movement, (and) in Ecuador, we want it to be an Ecuadorian movement. We want those people to know that they have what it takes to do this. ... I think our passion, at the end of day, is how we serve the kingdom and serve others well.”

Go to www.bcmintl.org for more information or to donate. “We’re a nonprofit, and we raise funds,” said Rhoads. “The finances we have all need to be raised, and we’re looking for partners that see our vision, believe in the vision, and would want to join through prayer and then also giving financially to us. We really try to connect people on a deeper level, so they’re not just giving to something random, but to connect to very specifically a country or a national leader or a person in country that’s reaching that country.”

“We’re a missions organization, but we differ from most missions organizations,” he continued. “Most are sending people from the West, from North America, other places. That’s what we were 89 years ago. But about 30 years ago, we started making the switch, and now the people that are our missionaries, those 17,000 that I’m talking about, are all people in their country reaching their country.”
