The annual CROP Hunger Walk
will be held on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road West, Holtwood. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the start of the walk at 9 a.m. The event is open to members of the public of all abilities and will have activities for children who participate.
This year will mark the 43rd CROP Hunger Walk in Solanco, a tradition that was started by the Solanco Ministerium in 1980. The ministerium coordinated the event until 2006, at which point Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren took over management of the walk. Church members Mary Etta Reinhart and Don Trimble have been co-chairs of the walk for the last 16 years and have made some adjustments that included moving it to Muddy Run Park and shortening the distance from 10 miles to 5 miles. “It’s been a wonderful change,” said Reinhart. “The walk has been completely revamped.”
The CROP Walk at Muddy Run has seen an upward trend in its community engagement and the amount of money it has raised in recent years; in 2020, it raised over $17,000, the most money raised from the walk since 1988. The goal for this year’s walk is set to $18,000.
Each year, the walk features a different challenge for participants. Walkers in this year’s event will receive a list of animals that they will need to spot along the course, which may be completed and exchanged for a small prize at the end of the walk.
Last year, over 70 walkers representing 13 churches participated in the CROP Walk. The event is designed to be enjoyable for everyone, and participants range from young children to senior citizens. The main route will stretch through several wooded areas; however, an alternate route that is entirely
paved will be available for families with strollers and those unable to trek the wooded paths. “It’s a fundraiser but also a great way to spend the morning,” said Reinhart.
“There’s a lot of fellowship. You get
to meet people from other churches and enjoy refreshments under the pavilion. A lot of people just enjoy being there with other walkers.”
Each CROP Walk traditionally donates 75% of its proceeds to the
Church World Service and 25% to a local nonprofit. This year, 25 percent of the funds raised will benefit Solanco Neighborhood Ministries.

A statement prepared by Snider’s son, Gary, will be read and Snider will be presented with a plaque commemorating the 50-year anniversary.
The Epilepsy Foundation Eastern PA (EFEPA) will hold its annual Walk to END EPILEPSY - Lancaster event at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. The event helps to raise the funds needed to continue providing the EFEPA’s free programs, services, and resources to the local epilepsy community in Lancaster. It is also a day of celebration and honoring epilepsy warriors and their stories.
The Walk to END EPILEPSY - Lancaster is non-competitive, family-friendly event and is open to the public. Registration is free, with fundraising strongly encouraged.

The Solanco Historical Society will hold its next program on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1:30 p.m. at the society’s archives building, located across from the Robert Fulton Birthplace at 1932 Robert Fulton High-
way (Route 222), Quarryville. The program is free and open to the public.
Carolyn Bausinger
In a presentation titled “Dressing for the Photographer,” Carolyn Bausinger will share simple ways to date and identify early photographs, as well as the styles of clothing worn during each decade. Determining the approximate date of a photograph may help to identify the people in the pictures. Bausinger noted that many people find it difficult to date 19th-century photographs, primarily because people are unfamiliar with the many different types of photographsdaguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, cartes de visits, and cabinet cards - used during the early decades of photography or with the clothing and hairstyles of that era.
Bausinger is a resident of Willow Valley, having returned to southcentral Pennsylvania in retirement. Before retiring, her various jobs included working as a recreation and program director in Germany for enlisted military personnel, a supervisory human resources administrator for the State of Pennsylvania, and a computer graphic design instructor at a junior college in New Jersey.
Her interest in the history of photography dates back 35 years, when she first took a class in the subject and was captivated by the work of the photographers of the medium’s early decades. She gives programs for her retirement community on those bygone photographers and developed “Dressing for the Photographer” as an introduction to that series.

Registration is available at the aforementioned website.
Sensory Hours will be offered on Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. for people of all ages. The museum will reduce its lighting and sounds and maintain a low attendance, with quiet spaces set up for breaks, for children and other community members with special sensory needs. A few of the historic trains will be open, with museum staff members present to answer questions. There is a fee per person, with free admission for children age 2 and under,
personal assistant aides and current members of the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Registration is available through www.eventbrite.com.
The museum will host Trains and Treats on Saturday, Oct. 22, during its regular hours. At the program, for children ages 3 to 12, attendees will pick up a treat bag when they arrive to collect a variety of nut-free candy and small, non-food items at each stop along the way as they tour the museum’s historic locomotives, railroad cars and interactive exhibits. Participants are invited to come in costume. Trains and Treats is included in the regular museum admission.
Also, tickets are now on sale on the previously mentioned website for the 1940s Swing Dance on Saturday, Nov. 5.

With an adjusted lineup, the girls’ tennis team wrapped up their Lancaster-Lebanon League Section Two season with a shutout victory over Garden Spot on Thursday, Sept. 29. They finish at 2-5 in league play.
“We made a few changes, and the girls made the necessary adjustments to end with a team win,” said head coach Annie Hammel. “It was nice to see all of their hard work come together. Their first serves were going in, they were moving opponents around and playing a more offensive game and playing more consistently. We’ve had some tough section matches lately so this was a
nice way to end the season,” she continued. “We are still hoping to get a match in against Oxford, though.”
Adrienne Dolan and Grace Pursel got things rolling with a shutout win at No. 1 doubles. Ava Peiffer and Caroline Lantz followed with an 8-5 victory while Kiara Chmielecki and Hailey Stanton won 8-2 at the third tandem.
Dolan, Destiny Langley, Pursel and Peiffer played 1 through 4 respectively in singles and all came away with straight set wins.
After a 1-0 victory over Lebanon on Sept. 21, the field hockey team has struggled, dropping five straight, includ-
ing a 2-1 overtime result against Octorara on the 29th.
In a pretty evenly matched outing against the Braves, Solanco drew first blood on a pileup in front of Octorara’s cage. Sadie Cook was credited with the goal and Kaitlyn Fulton got the assist.
The Braves scored the equalizer at the 4:01 mark and then grabbed the win when Gianna Lambert notched her second goal in the extra period.
“Both teams were awarded penalty strokes in the game,” recalled head coach Whitney Hawkins. “Super proud of Caitlin on the save. Kudos to Octorara’s goalie also. It was a great confidence booster for both goalies.
Prior to the game, Solanco’s Mini Mules (players from Solanco’s summer camp) were announced and made their way to center field along with the starters.
“I believe it’s a great way to get the younger kids involved and with the ‘big kids’ they looked up to as coaches at camp,” Hawkins added.
Last Monday, Oct. 3, the team traveled to Garden Spot where the hosts remained undefeated in Section Three play with an 8-0 result. “Playing on turf makes a big difference,” said Hawkins. “We lost to them 3-0 the first time. We played well but were always a step behind with the pace.”
In a game that see-sawed back-and-forth, Solanco’s defense got the stop that they
needed and outlasted Twin Valley 32-25 in a key Section Three road game Friday, Sept. 30. The win keeps the Mules on pace with undefeated Elizabethtown.
“They are a very good team and gave Elizabethtown (47-42) a tough time,” said head coach Tony Cox. “We scored when we needed to, and the defense got a big stop at the end. I felt we did a good job of managing the clock when we had the lead.”
Brody Mellinger scored twice, capping Solanco’s first drive of the game 7-yards to paydirt at the 7:47 mark in the first quarter. He scored later in the second quarter when Solanco put together a 12-play, 78-yard drive that resulted in Mellinger’s 3-yard scamper. In between, TV settled for a 32-yard field goal.
Mellinger also found Elijah Cunningham (105 rushing yards, 2 receptions) for a 27yard touchdown pass that pushed Solanco’s lead to 19-3 at the half.
Down 16 at the half, TV actually outscored the visitors 22-13 in the second half. The Raiders opened the scoring with a 31yard passing TD and a successful two-point run. Solanco countered with a Cunningham 8-yard jaunt to the endzone. A 7-yard run by Cole Harris (138 rushing yards) in the fourth quarter was sandwiched between a pair of TV scores. The Raiders turned the ball over on downs on their final possession, sealing Solanco’s win.
CROSS COUNTRY
In their last home meet of the season, the harrier teams posted wins over Manheim Central but fell short in knocking off Elizabethtown.
Wyatt Tomison (18:27) and Anthony Solis-Morales (18:28) led the Mules to an 18-37 victory over the Barons by finishing first and second, respectively.
Eight Elizabethtown runners crossed the line in front of Jimmy Hartigan (11th) and Isaac Esh (13th). Ian Althoff was the final counter, placing 23rd overall and ahead of Manheim’s fourth and fifth runners. Thomas Houghton (26th), Dominic Arbogast (27th), and Rusty Armstrong (28th) also placed in the top 30.
The boys sit at 4-3 in Section Two
The girls’ team placed four runners in the top ten and ahead of Manheim’s top three in a 20-35 victory. The Bears earned five of the top six places to remain undefeated on the year.
Emma Baxter’s 22:02 was good for second place overall. Gracie Hartigan (7th), Christine Wagner (8th) and Daria Neaves (9th) were within a minute of Baxter’s pace while Anna Linde (20th) rounded out the top five.
The girls finish at 3-4 in Section Two.
After a 5-game losing streak, the girls’ soccer team appears to have its mojo back. Their 3-1 win over L-S on Sept. 29 made it two straight with four games left on the schedule.
After a 0-0 first half, Solanco took control, scoring twice in a two-minute span, and never looked back. Meg Bailey assisted Josie Janssen in the 56th minute and then took a pass from Alanna Brown two minutes later for a solid lead.
L-S got one back in the 64th minute but Solanco iced the verdict when Alyssa Harpe made good on a corner kick

served up by Sarah Landis.
“Meg had a great game,” said head coach Matt Janssen. “She made dangerous runs and created chances. Alyssa, Alanna, Addison O’Donnell, and Misa Daniel-Morales played well to control the center of the field and give us a chance to keep up our offensive pressure.”
Last Wednesday Solanco dropped a 2-0 final against Ephrata (9-0).
The boys’ soccer team went up against the second highest scoring team in Section Two on Saturday, Oct. 1. While a 5-0 result is a bit lopsided, the Mules held the second placed Pioneers to just two first half goals. The hosts, however, scored in the first minute of the second half and added two more goals on successful corner kick conversions.
The volleyball team opened the second half of L-L League Section Two play Thursday, Sept. 29 at home against Cocalico. Hoping to reverse the rolls and turn a 3-1 first half loss into a victory, Solanco opened with a hard-fought 26-24 first set. The Eagles, however, ran off the next three, including a 25-21 fourth set for the ‘W’.
“It came down to who was going to make more attack errors,” said head coach Dillon Costrello.
Solanco (1-8) rallied with a strong serving run in the first set to go up 25-24. “We fought hard for that last point and they errored out of bounds,” noted Costrello. “In the next two sets we were hitting right at their players. In the last set, down 22-16, I told the team to focus on the shot in the middle and that’s how we bounced back. It was an emotional game. I know they wanted to win.”
Alaina Herr (3 aces, 8 kills) sparked the offense with
Addison Boyd dishing 8 assists. Madison Boyle (2 blocks) and Marissa Cannizzaro (9 digs) were the defensive standouts.

It aims to raise awareness of trafficking and exploitation affecting women, men, and children in communities such as Lancaster, Reading, York, Lebanon, Lititz, Manheim, Myerstown, Norristown, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia.
Holding signs, people will walk silently, single-file for 2.5 miles on the streets and sidewalks of
Lancaster city to remind the community that trafficking exists and to invite local residents to join efforts to put an end to this crime. Additionally, individuals will be able to learn more about human trafficking by visiting a Trafficking Simulation, an immersive experience where they will learn about a trafficking case. The event will also include a kids’ zone, music, and food trucks.
In addition to Hope Inspire Love, several other anti-trafficking nonprofits will be represented at the event, showcasing the work and services they provide in the community to fight trafficking.

Snider was the president of the Quarryville Jaycees Club when he conceived the midget football program in 1971. The Quarryville Jaycees Club is part of JCI USA, a leadership training and service organization for those between the ages of 18 and 40. Its focus is training young members of the community in areas such as management skills, business expertise and community service. As president of the Quarryville branch, Snider organized the football program in November of 1971, and the first games were played during the following season in 1972. Over 6,000 kids have graduated from the program since its inception.
“Many of the seniors on the high school football team first played together on the B team in the midget football
program,” said Jennie Prange, vice president of the association. “Most of them say their favorite memory since starting to play football was winning the championship together on that team.”
Last year, the program started welcoming the high school players to come mentor the kids in the program. The players come to a couple practices a week to teach the kids different positions and individually show them techniques based on the position they play. “They love helping the younger kids. They’re always so excited to connect with them, and it gives the kids something to look forward to,” said Prange.
In addition to returning to mentor, several former members of the program have returned to coach the teams. “It’s so nice that they want to come back and give back to the program by getting involved,” said Prange. “We’re not just out there teaching the kids how to play the
game; we’re teaching them to be responsible and work as a team.” The association strives to instill a sense of responsibility and respect, often incorporating ways for the players to participate in community service. As the cost of
admission for a pool party event at the beginning of the season, players donated canned goods and other items to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries’ food bank.
