Troop PA-3125 posts craft show

On Saturday, April 1, American Heritage Girls Troop PA-3125 will hold a craft show at the Solanco Fairgrounds, Park Avenue, Quarryville. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Kreider Building and will be free to attend.
SNM organizes Food Fight fundraiser

On March 14, Solanco

Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) kicked off its first Food Fight program, a March Madness-themed fundraiser to encourage the community to donate nonperishable foods throughout the month. Until Monday, April 3, participating businesses will collect donations from a list of goods provided by SNM. At the end of the collection period, the businesses that collected the greatest amount of donations will compete with each other in a basketball shootout on Wednesday, April 12.
SNM compiled the list of 16 goods for businesses to collect based on what the organization’s food bank is often short of. The “Sweet 16” list includes items such as canned meats, canned fish, fruit cups, pasta, Chef Boyardee microwave meals, canned vegetables, cooking oil and mayonnaise.
The businesses competing in the Food Fight will be divided into four

brackets: Cinderella Story, which entails collecting 50 to 99 lbs. of food; Long Shots, for collections between 100 and 199 pounds of donations; Fan Favorites, for total donations between 200 and 299 pounds and The Dynasty, which comprises business that collect over 300 pounds of goods. SNM will place participating businesses into each bracket based on size and collection ability so that smaller businesses are able to compete with larger companies.
SNM was inspired to create the fundraiser by two local churches that previously used the competition format to elicit donations from the community. During the spring months, SNM often sees fewer donations, and it hopes that the event will help it to cover the community’s needs. “Donations often pick up during the holidays, but February through the summer is always the slowest part of the year,” said Todd Capitao, SNM’s director of programming. Capitao added that SNM hopes to hold the Food Fight annually and will use the
format for an event this summer that will involve local churches.
In addition to the spring being a time when SNM sees fewer donations, Capitao said that this year is especially important to increase donations. On March 1, the government reduced food security benefits, and SNM has been attempting to assist locals who were dependent on the program. Another obstacle that SNM hopes to overcome with the fundraiser is the increase of food prices; the cost of many items has doubled since last year. The more items that SNM is able to receive in donations, the less it has to use funds to special order goods that the community needs.
The business that wins the basketball shootout will receive a trophy that has been donated by JDog Junk Removal & Hauling and it will be decorated with the business’s name and the year of the event. The location of the concluding ceremony has not been finalized yet. For more information, search for “Solanco Neighborhood Ministries” on Facebook.

The craft show will feature a mix of vendors and crafters, who will sell a variety of items, many of which will be spring or Easter themed. Items such as spring décor, Easter baskets, jewelry, wreaths and wooden crafts will be sold at the event, and all proceeds will benefit Troop PA-3125. The troop will operate a booth to offer informational materials to attendees, and food will be available to purchase from the Fry Shack food truck. The event will also include a prize drawing for multiple items donated by participating crafters and local businesses.

The Pioneers and Patriots groups of Troop PA-3125, which together comprise the girls in the troop between the ages of 12 and 16, are organizing the event with the help of volunteer Danielle Worrell. Worrell, whose daughter is a member of Troop PA-3125, introduced the idea to hold the group’s first craft show

Quarryville Library expands programs
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, offers a large array of programs year-round, with options constantly expanding. The library’s program director, Sharon Roche, is always looking for ways to invigorate the program schedule and is heading into spring with a fresh set of ideas.
On March 20, Roche hosted the library’s first “walking book club.” Participants prepared by reading “Black Food” by Bryant Terry, a book that was selected by the Longwood Gardens Community
Read program. “Black Food” features recipes, poetry, essays and artwork that explore different aspects of Black culture. Walkers met at the Enola Low Grade Trail and strolled as they discussed the book, and Roche invited participants to bring food prepared with the book’s recipes to share with each other. After the event, Roche gave away two prizes: a family pass to Longwood Gardens and a copy of “Black Food.” “I was trying to think of ways that I could fit more exercise and more reading into my schedule; I thought this would be a great way to do that,” Roche said.

due to her experience in planning other shows in the past. The girls in the troop have assisted by creating a Facebook page for the event, plotting where each vendor will be stationed, creating a flyer and designing yard signs. Each troop member will earn an entrepreneurial badge for her efforts with planning the function. Worrell and the troop’s leader, Kaitlynn Yetder, hope to make the craft show an annual fundraiser.
The funds raised from the craft show will help the troop to acquire camping equipment such as tents for its trips, as well as lower the cost for girls to participate in the program. The profits from the event will also be used to cover the cost of Troop PA-3125’s regular outings such as trips to the Fulton Theatre in Lancaster city and local zoos.

American Heritage Girls is a faith-based scouting program
that was founded in 1995. Troop PA-3125 was created in 2019 and meets on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville. “Our mission is to build women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country,” said Yetder. “We teach different life skills and do various activities and fun outings for the girls.” The troop regularly assists with projects that serve the community, such as Blessings of Hope and Operation Christmas Child. Last year, the older girls organized a baby shower and donated the collected items to women in need.
“It’s helped my daughter to be proud of who she is and who God made her to be,” said Worrell. “As a parent, I’ve seen her grow as well as enjoy the camping, hiking and fishing trips.”

The Quarryville Library participates in PA Forward, a literacy initiative from the Pennsylvania Library Association. The initiative highlights five literacies: basic literacy, health literacy, civic and social literacy, financial literacy and information literacy. When exploring ideas for new programs, Roche said that she tries to focus on at least one of the literacies. The walking book club promotes health, social and basic literacy. Roche added that she hopes to make the club a monthly activity.
On Wednesday, March 29, at 1 p.m., the library will host “How to Spot a Scam,” a program that will focus on information literacy. Josh Gastineau, a graduate student at Millersville University, will give a presentation on topics that relate to safely using technology and the internet, such as how to spot red flags in fraudulent emails. Gastineau is present at the Quarryville Library three days

a week as an extra staff member through a grant from Millersville University. On days that he is at the library, Gastineau assists patrons with other aspects of technological literacy and basic computer use. “You always have to be on your toes. There are always new tricks and scams online,” Roche said. “We put together a basic first path to avoid these things and teach people to recognize the red flags.”
On Thursday, March 30, at 4:30 p.m., naturalist Lisa Sanchez with Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a demonstration of how to make compost and will offer gardening tips to attendees. Patrons will be able to take home soil and seeds from Longwood Gardens to start their own gardens at home.

Fulton caps career with 104 wins, 52 pins
BY MONA STEINHAUERThe goal of any athlete is to be the best; to excel at the highest level. So, when one falls short, there is disappointment and time for
re-evaluation.
Jared Fulton punched his ticket to the PIAA championships held March 9-11 at the Giant Center in Hershey. The senior went 1-2 and fell short in his quest for a state medal
but that is just a little bump on his impressive resume. He finished his career with 104 wins against 32 losses and an impressive 52 pins. He is a two-time state qualifier, a fourtime L-L League finalist and

two-time L-L champ.
Fulton was one of just 75 Solanco matmen to qualify for states from 1956 to 2023. Solanco has had just 32 PIAA place-winners, the first coming in 1973 (Keith Kreider,

WEIGHT LOSS FOR A HEALTHIER LIFE
third place). It is not an easy accomplishment.
Fulton opened the tournament with a 5-0 loss to Bethlehem Catholic’s Cael McIntyre.
“All the scoring came in the first period in a span of 30
seconds,” recalled head coach Tony Mendez. “It was a very tough first match. Even though Jared came in first in his region and McIntyre was third. I really expected him to win his region.”
We offer both non-surgical and surgical weight loss options.

If you struggle with your weight and health issues such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea, our Healthy Weight Management & Bariatric Surgery program may be right for you. Visit

Fulton rebounded with a solid 9-1 major over Eli Bounds (Boiling Springs) in the consolations.
“Bounds was a seventhplace medalist last year,” said Mendez. “Jared faced him in the semifinals at regionals as well. He controlled the entire match.”
In his second wrestleback on Friday, Fulton’s season ended with a 2:32 fall against eventual eighth place finisher Gabriel Ruggieri (Connellsville).

“Jared shot deep into a single, close to the edge of the mat,” Mendez recalled. “The kid knocked Jared off his feet and got him to his back. He fought like crazy. That’s the hard part. There it ends.
“If he wins, he gets the kid from Northern (Rocco Fratelli) who he beat before. And if he wins that, he’s in for a medal.
“It’s the state tournament so everyone is tough,” he continued. “I still believe he is one of the top eight wrestlers in that 133-pound bracket. It was just unfortunate the way the bracket played out.
“It’s tough for a senior and it’s tough as a coach. You don’t know what to say, though I could relate to Jared’s situation. I was a two-time state qualifier and did not medal either, but I felt I grew as a wrestler in college (Millersville-D2),” he added. “Jared will continue his career at Kutztown University. States is awesome, but it does not define his career. He’s on to bigger and better things now.”
Fulton caps his season at 37-5. Solanco’s last state
place-winner was Dominic Flatt who finished fourth in the 2020-21 season.
BASKETBALL
The Lancaster-Lebanon League basketball all-stars, as voted on by the L-L coaches, have been announced and the Solanco teams were well represented. Jenna Ehlers received first team recognition, Kara Peace was recognized as a defensive all-star, Paige Althoff received academic all-star honors and head coach Chad McDowell was voted as Coach of the Year.
On the boys’ side, both Tyler Burger and Noah Bailey received honorable mention
all-star recognition. The pair also received the Coaches Award at Solanco’s end-ofthe-year banquet.
Other banquet award winners included Austin Wenger (Defensive Player of the Year) and senior Manny Himes, junior Trevor Masterson, and freshman Isiah Wright as MVP award winners.
INDOOR TRACK
Solanco’s pole vaulting phenom capped her indoor season at the New Balance National meet held Sunday, March 12 where she settled for fourth place with a 125.5 vault. Veronica Vacca’s 13-7.25 won the event.

“I really identified with Candy’s vision,” said Louie, whose background includes 10 years working with Dauphin County Children and Youth and 13 years in mental health counseling. With Louie on board, Second Grace is looking for more mentors. The organization will hold information sessions from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12; from 9 to 11 a.m. or 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 15; and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. The sessions will be held at Second Grace, 1610 Landis Road, Mount Joy.

Currently, Second Grace has a core group of six Sages. The goal is to match each of the young mothers one-onone with a Sage, who will make a two-year commitment to work with the mother. “It takes about six to 10 hours a month to serve as a Sage,” Louie stated. “The Sages can talk to the Graces on the phone, meet in person to do things, go to appointments with them or do whatever they need for support.”
To prepare for the role as a mentor, the Sages receive 25 to 30 hours of training, covering everything from substance use and mental health concerns to cultural issues and confidentiality. Training will include both in-person and online aspects, and Sages will also attend monthly Sage Tune-up Education Engagement Readiness (STEER) meetings.
For their part, the Graces will work directly with their assigned Sage and will also participate in Grace Gatherings, social meetings for the mothers to learn about a variety of topics, including physical and mental health, nutrition and employment skills. “Our program has mentorship, education and employment components,” noted Abel, adding that Graces have the opportunity
issues if they arise during the mentorship program, and ongoing support will be offered to the Sages.
Abel said she’s excited to see Second Grace take off now that Louie’s been hired. “I keep asking the people who have signed up to wait, and I knew I needed to do something to get this going,” she stated, noting that she began Second Grace in 2021. “Deb will start this engine up and get the train out of the station.”
to work at Girl Crush, a bath and body products company Abel started in 2017, among other job options.
Louie emphasized that anyone with a heart for service would make a good Sage, noting, “We’re not looking for someone to be perfect. We’re looking for someone to be present.” Experts will be available to handle bigger
Along with the Sage program, Second Grace has a wide range of additional volunteer opportunities, including providing transportation for the Graces, performing clerical or office work, fundraising and social media/marketing.
