During the second annual event, vendors will be set up both inside and outside the library. “We will have 20 garden-type temporary sheds that we are putting up, and (the vendors) will also have tables in the library,” explained IMA member Mike Sensenig. “We will have double the sheds we had last year. Train Room Sets Holiday Open Houses
Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, will host its annual holiday Train Room open houses on Saturdays from Nov. 29 through Dec. 27 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. People of all ages are invited to visit. The Train Room features an HO-gauge layout that includes Thomasville and a “Talk with Thomas” station. The elevated O-gauge track includes waterfalls and drive-in theaters. The display will also feature new seasonal additions crafted by the Garden Spot Village Train Club. The open houses are free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted. For more information, visit www.gardenspotvillage .org/events/.
even a few famous entertainers,” noted Germaine.
Nolan was supplied with students’ questions prior to the assembly. The first question asked about his decision to join the Marines. “I was always drawn to military service when I was younger,” he shared. “I wanted to do something to benefit my country and to make a difference in people’s lives.”
He quoted John F. Kennedy, who said, “Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.” “That is something that stuck with me, and that really resonated with me. It was one of the reasons I joined
the military,” he stated.
Another student asked about living conditions. “Normally, I stay in a barracks room with a roommate. We eat at a cafeteria like you do,” he noted. “When we are out training, we sleep outside for a week or two weeks and we don’t have access to our cafeteria, so we eat an MRE - Meal Ready to Eat. This one is chili macaroni,” he said, displaying the meal. “It has all the calories we need but in a small package.”
He added that it is hard to be away from family, but he is able to stay in touch with them through video calls. He also
pointed out the bonds he has made with fellow Marines. “It is very special in that you spend a lot of time together and do a lot of training together, and it builds a very special bond. The friends I made in the military will stay my friends for life.”
“You stay a Marine for life,” he added. “Even when you finish your time, it stays with you. This is something all Marines and veterans are very proud of.”
Speaking in person at the assembly was Pete Wise, an E-4 sergeant in the United States Air Force. “I was in the Air Force for four years long before you were
born, from 1987 to 1991,” he told the students. “My job in the Air Force was administrative specialist, so I spent most of my time in an office. I primarily managed a big library of forms and publications and regulations that other people in the Air Force needed to access to do their jobs.”
In his final year of service, he was part of Operation Desert Storm. “(Desert Storm) took place in the Middle East. It began when the country of Iraqi invaded the country of Kuwait to try to take their oil reserves,” Wise explained. “I ended up going to the United

The Power of Imagination
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Growing up, my family did not have a lot of extra money to spend, so we were very creative when it came to recreation and having fun. We sought out free events, mostly at our church, and we spent many a Saturday or Sunday afternoon at our local airport watching the planes land and take off. My dad and I would sit on a bench together, and we would use our imaginations to come up with stories about where the passengers were coming from and where they were headed.
A few Sundays a month we also went to a dairy, where there was a huge pond of ducks. We saved up bread and other treats during the week to feed them. Then, we all
enjoyed an ice cream cone.
Life was simpler back then without cellphones and tablets. We ate meals together at the kitchen table, and as kids we spent time outdoors after school, only coming home for dinner. During baseball season, we spent evenings on the back porch listening to Phillies games on my dad’s AM transistor radio where the simple sounds of baseball allowed us to imagine that we were really at the ballpark.
In the summertime, a few of my cousins and I spent afternoons at our grandmom’s house. Again, the days were not spent in front of the TV or computer or playing video games. We had scavenger hunts in the woods, and we rode bicycles and played kickball.
On rainy days, we drew pictures,
put puzzles together and played indoor games like Chinese checkers and board games like Monopoly. My grandmother allowed us to set up the Monopoly board in a spare bedroom and we kept it up, playing the same game for weeks at a time. Once a week, my grandmom gave us enough money to go to the neighborhood store. It was like an old-fashioned general store. There were a few grocery staples, like milk and bread, along with and giant freezers filled with quarts of ice cream and individual ice cream treats like twin-pops; ice cream sandwiches;and those amazing push-up pops, which were tubes filled with ice cream with a stick that you could push up from the bottom.

bar stools. The best drink offered there was a cherry cola, which came straight from the soda fountain, not out of a bottle or
can. It was singularly the best drink I have ever had in my life. Maybe it tasted better because we could sit at the counter and pretend we were grown-ups and drink our colas out of our tall glasses with red and white striped straws.
I’m not sure Grace, the proprietor, was a big fan of us kids sitting
on those stools, but she was a good friend of my grandmother, so she kept an eye on us during our visits. The only time she scolded us was when we would spin in our chairs. Growing up, we found that imagination made life more fun. We created our own experiences; we conjured up our own adventures and made our own fun.
Our favorite “toy” at home was a button jar. We would spill out the buttons on the kitchen table, and my and mother and I would play with them, organizing them by color or type. As I grew older and my ability to be more imaginative increased, we used the buttons to create scenes and we formed images with them, like rainbows.
Unbelievably, I found a button jar recently while shopping at one of the ReUzit shops. I don’t have any real use for all those buttons, but I keep it on a shelf above my desk to remind me that creativity and imagination should continue to be a part of my life and to not get bogged down by today’s technology.
I also recently had the opportunity to visit some cousins in my hometown. I stopped at the airport and the bench where I sat with my dad was still there, and there were still small planes coming in and taking off, but the bench was empty. The general store was still there as well, but it is a coffee shop now, offering pastries and muffins instead of groceries. The freezers were removed so that sofas and gathering areas could be put in place. But in the midst of it all, the long counter remained. There are no longer cherry colas served there, but the counter offers customers a place to talk, perhaps to reminisce, all while enjoying their coffees. And for those looking to re-create a special moment from their childhood, they could still spin in their chairs.

Makers’ Market
circle in the grass with Christmas lights strung between.”
“They will sell a little bit of everything - crafts and jewelry and food items,” added IMA member Carl Kosko, proprietor of the Inn & Spa at Intercourse Village. He noted that the sheds were donated and the Christmas light display will be put into place by Tim Ober, who previously designed displays at Dutch Wonderland. “He has a huge selection of Christmas lights, and it will look amazing,” Kosko said. “It looked amazing last year and will look even more amazing this year.”
This year, the market is being organized by Flourish Markets, founded by Pequea Valley High School graduate Makenna Bradley, who also is the owner of Makenna’s Beads, which offers handmade jewelry.
In addition to the market, other events will take place on Dec. 5 at the library. Carriage rides will be offered from 4 to 6 p.m. for a donation. From 5 to 7 p.m., there will be a luminaria stroll along Center Street, fire truck demonstrations and a performance by guitarist Edward Swaton. Santa will arrive on an Intercourse Fire Company truck at 6 p.m., followed by Christmas carols with Santa at 6:15 p.m. and a tree lighting at 6:30 p.m.
On Dec. 6, the makers’ market
will be open all day, and food trucks will be on hand. Entertainment will include the Dickens Carolers, which will perform from noon to 1 p.m. followed by German dancers from 1 to 2 p.m. and a performance by the Pequea Valley Secondary School choir from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
“What is different this year is we have more entertainment. Last year, we had German dancers, and they are coming back. We have carolers coming in again, and Pequea Valley will have their choral group, who will perform an actual show,” noted Kosko.
Other events on Dec. 6 will include gingerbread cookie decorating from noon to 5 p.m.; carriage rides that will depart from the library from noon to 6 p.m.; and visits with Santa from 2 to 4 p.m.
A Shepherd’s Walk will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Hampton Inn, 3476 Old Philadelphia Pike, Intercourse, and end at the library. Children are invited to dress as shepherds and take part. The walk will proceed to a live Nativity at the library, which will be staged at 6 and at 6:30 p.m.
The IMA Lodging Christmas Cookie Tour will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Dec. 6. During that time, ticketholders will be able to tour local lodging facilities, including hotels and bed-and-
breakfast facilities, and sample cookies at each location. Visitors, who will be entered into a contest for prizes, will also be able to vote for their favorite cookie. “It’s a great opportunity to tour the (local lodging locations), plus you get a good cookie, too,” Sensenig said. Proceeds from ticket sales will also benefit the library.
Intercourse Library is part of the Lancaster County Library System. The library, which originated in a one-room schoolhouse in 1975, now operates from a 9,500-squarefoot facility that opened in 2007. The facility includes a replica of the original schoolhouse, where programming is offered. The library also offers public computers, Wi-Fi, printing, a collection of books and a special archive of local historical material.
“It is a phenomenal library,” Sensenig added. “It’s such a great building. (It has) a one-room schoolhouse that they built, which looks just like the schoolhouse I went to.”
Kosko encourages local residents as well as visitors from other neighborhoods to enjoy the Christkindlmarkt and all of the festivities. “It’s all about community. There will obviously be tourists there, but we want the locals to come out and have a good time and Christmas shop,” he said. “It is a great way to start the holiday season. It’s going to be spectacular.”

There, his job duties shifted.
“When I was in Desert Storm, I did not do any administrative work that I did stateside. I was with a squadron called the Seventh Mobile Area Force Squadron, or Seventh MAC,” he said. “Our job was to load and unload cargo
planes with cargo and with people - to keep those planes moving and keeping those service members moving where they needed to go.
Our squadron also packed parachutes for cargo packages that fell out of the sky to land safely on the ground.”
In response to a student question, he said he learned a great deal while serving in the military.
“It was a great honor to not only serve in the Air Force, but in Desert Storm. It was a great experience, and if I had to do it over again, I would certainly do it again.”
“You (students) are the reason people sign up for the military - to protect you, defend the homeland and protect our way of life here in the United States,” he added.
