Changing Perspectives: MTEF Event To Focus On Trauma-Informed Care
By Ann Mead Ash
Based on the success of its True Swing Softball Camp for girls and the True Serve Volleyball Camp for both boys and girls, Pequea Baptist Church, located at 6062 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, has decided to form the True Goal Hockey League for both boys and girls in grades one through six. “We have enjoyed connecting with the community in the different sports programs,” said Doug Kauffman, director of children’s outreach ministries at Pequea Baptist Church. “We hope this is another program the community will find valuable.” True Goal Hockey will be held at the church beginning Tuesday, March 31. Students in group A, which will include grades one through three, will meet on
Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Players in group B, in grades three through six, will meet at 7:30 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday. The program will conclude on Thursday, May 21. The program, which will teach the fundamentals of floor or deck hockey, will follow a weekly progression, beginning with play evaluations, team introductions, rules, and league orientation the first week. During the second and third weeks, the teams will practice with coach assistance and begin scrimmaging. During weeks four through seven, the teams will begin playing each other, and during week eight a possible playoff will occur. According to Kauffman, children who wish to take part need not have any experience with hockey. “(The program is) open to anyone who wants to learn the See Hockey pg 5

According to Tammi Fahrney, assistant director of the Manheim Township Education Foundation (MTEF), it is one of the goals of the Manheim Township School District to encourage positive behavior intervention and support, and the topic of this year’s MTEF Education Forecast Breakfast fits right in with that goal. “We are talking about the value of trauma-informed care and wellness in schools and the workforce,” explained Fahrney, who added that the topic is trending in education, but that the information is also important to the workforce and the community. In July 2019, Governor Wolf signed Senate Bill 144, making training and development of trauma-informed care
Nate Bird is suited up to take part in the Pequea Baptist Church True Goal Hockey League, which will be held at the church beginning Tuesday, March 31. The program is open to area students in first through sixth grades.
Second Indoor Yard Sale Will Help Restore Church Windows By Ann Mead Ash
A year ago, Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church member Jenni Simmons conceived the idea of holding a yard sale in a revelation she refers to as a “God moment.” Simmons partnered with fellow church member Lorin Wortel, and the two worked with others in the congregation to hold the first indoor yard sale. The successful sale raised more than $8,000 toward replacing the roof on the nearly 300-year-old church. Sweet Pea Project Schedules First Fundraising Skate By Ann Mead Ash
Stephanie Paige Cole, founder of Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a
baby, wanted to hold a fundraiser that would be inclusive of the entire community. “Our board members … were thinking of things our children like to do that would be a fun way to get the community involved,” said Cole. See Sweet Pea pg 7
Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church members display items that will be sold at the church’s second indoor yard sale to help raise funds for building maintenance. This year’s sale will be held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on March 20 and 21.
