Pequea Valley FFA students earned high marks while representing their school district at the 97th Mid-Winter Convention held on Jan. 12 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex. During the event, new members received their blue corduroy FFA jackets, marking the beginning of their FFA journey, while senior students earned the FFA Keystone Degree, Pennsylvania’s highest level of FFA achievement. Finally, a team of Pequea Valley students placed first in the Ag Issues Forum Contest.

Students who received their jackets were Hunter Russum, Myla Smucker, Shyann Metzler, Sophia Stoltzfus, Luke Smucker, Leah Eby, Nathan Walter, Mackenzie Whiteman, Kimberly Rynard, Jazlyn Quartey, Noah Matos, Erin McGinley and Olivia Zook. FFA members can buy their own jackets, but many receive them through sponsored, gifted programs or scholarships. Lauren Coblentz,

With a tagline of “always pushing the boundaries of what theater can be,” Creative Works of Lancaster champions the power of performance.

“We believe that theater can be a powerful force for goodbuilding community, sparking connections and cultivating joy and wonder - and we want people to know that there are many ways to experience theater that go beyond buying a ticket and sitting quietly in a dark building looking up at a proscenium stage,” said executive director Lydia Brubaker. “It can happen anywhere, be accessible and relatable for everyone.”

Creative Works of Lancaster became a nonprofit in 2010 after a few years of grassroots organizing with a group of creative people in Lancaster, Brubaker said. Original board members were Brubaker, Anne Kirby, Daniel Klotz, Jenn McMorris and the late Douglas Campbell.

“The project started with plans for a community arts center, with creative co-working space, rehearsal and studio space, performance and gallery space and

Remembering Joan Lorenz

Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township

It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of Joan Lorenz, principal founder of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township.

A little more than 25 years ago, Joan’s fervent enthusiasm for history prompted her to accept the challenge to write “The History of Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.” That enthusiasm encouraged others in the neighborhood, and soon many in the community were sharing family history, news articles and photographs, often volunteering to help with research.

One of the first paragraphs in Joan Lorenz’ 2002 book states, “I believe that the past is still with us, changed and converted, but turned into new configurations of land, families and institutions. It is the connections that need to be made with what we have been, what we are, and what we will decide to be in this place.” The book has become the definitive history of Salisbury Township.

Joan’s interest in her adopted place of residence continued. She co-wrote several other books about the villages in the township and worked tirelessly to promote the society. Her ability to persuade business owners to share their wares at the annual gala, held at Salisbury Park in Gap, made that endeavor a huge success for the 10 years it was held. Eventually, changes in the park facilities rendered the gala impractical for that venue.

The success of the annual house tours was assured because of Joan’s vigorous attention to the history of each house, church or business. It is a dream of the society to begin house tours again.

Joan was one of the principal contributors to the book “Civil War Veterans Who Lived in or Were Buried in Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.” That comprehensive volume is consulted by people from all

performs three to six times a year.

“The whole city is our stage, and we’re always looking for new spots that inspire us or feel like the right place for a particular performance,” Brubaker stated. The group has performed in more traditional venues, such as Zoetropolis, West Art and the Green Room Theatre at Franklin & Marshall College, but it has also used space in restaurants, shops, schools, public parks, barns, churches, hotels, parking lots, cemeteries and more.

The organization’s mascot is named E.E. (for the Exquisite Explorer) and is always shape-shifting and changing outfits, representative of the nonprofit’s evolving works.

“We do original plays by local playwrights, sock puppet parodies of classic films, The 24-Hour Plays: Lancaster, site-specific performances designed for particular locations and traveling performances where the audience moves from one place to another,” Brubaker said.

Originally from Lancaster, Brubaker has been involved in regional theater for two decades. She directed new plays in college and enjoys collaborating with playwrights, but she also participated in Odyssey of the Mind, a creativity and problem-solving competition for students, and put on puppet shows as a child. Some past highlights have included inviting audiences to eat hot dogs and do camp activities with the troupe, setting willing audience members up on awkward dates for a Valentine’s Day performance and creating a theatrical escape room set in an Antarctic research station.

“We just got done with a busy fall, celebrating our 15-year anniversary with the Net Gala, our send-up of the Met Gala, and premiering ‘Dead Inside,’ a new play by local playwright Gwen Tulin, and ‘Dye Hard: The Siege of Sockatomi Plaza,’ our latest sock puppet parody by playwright and former Creative Works board member Erich Goldstein,” Brubaker said. The group is taking a short break but is also busy planning its 2026 season, which will include a new sock puppet show for the Lancaster Fringe Festival in May.

To keep live theater accessible to everyone, Creative Works of Lancaster uses a “pay what you decide” ticketing model, letting audience members decide what the experience was worth to them or what they can afford after a show is over.

“We’re creating brand-new theater by artists in the community. There are so many talented, creative people in the area, and while there are many other great theaters that provide opportunities for people to work on established plays and musicals, we want to give people opportunities to collaborate on new work, take chances and bring their ideas to life,” Brubaker said.

A production of “Dead Inside,” performed by Creative Works of Lancaster in a kitchen space

which 30 to 40 different Amish and Mennonite groups volunteered to quilt.

“They volunteer the whole day (to work on) personal (quilt) tops that people can consign with me,” Fredericksen explained. “I follow (the customer’s) directions. I interview them for about an hour and we talk about what they would like to see (such as) if they want colored thread or binding. The person that owns the quilt tops pays, and that generates money for the store, and it all goes to missions.”

Groups typically quilt during select days January through July, working on finishing products and stitching new quilts to sell in the

store as well. The room is then closed to quilting in the fall and through December because it is used for the shop’s Christmas display. “The public can come in and watch, but no photographs,” noted Fredericksen.

The room includes several quilting frames that the volunteers can use while stitching. “We pin the quilts to quilting frames to keep tension,” noted Fredericksen. “I mark the quilts with pencil that washes out or white chalk if you can’t see the pencil on the dark fabric. They use quilting thread, which is stronger than regular thread. I give guidance on the design, and the ladies follow that. I leave plenty of notes.”

Quilts of all designs and patterns are currently for sale in the quilt room. There is also a closeted area on the second floor where the more valuable quilts are displayed on hangers, as well as an area offering quilted pillows and quilted wall hangings.

“Quilts are beautiful. The artwork

- the beauty - is the hand stitching,” said Fredericksen, noting that no two quilts are alike.

All proceeds from the sale of quilts, as well as other items sold in the store, benefit the humanitarian efforts of the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). “All of the money goes to MCC,” Fredericksen said. “It is a wonderful store.”

Country Gift & Thrift Shop is located at 5602 Old Philadelphia Pike (Route 340), Gap. Offered for sale at the store are antiques; books;

bridal gowns; crafting supplies; housewares; jewelry; linens; toys; and clothing for men, women and children. Donations of gently used items are accepted year-round. For more information, visit www.countrygiftandthrift.com or www.facebook.com/Country GiftAndThrift. Those who would like to have the volunteers work on a quilt for them may contact the store at 717-768-3784 and ask for Fredericksen, who can also provide a schedule of quilting days.

Sportsmen’s Banquet Planned

The New Holland Sportsmen’s Banquet will be held on Friday, March 13, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland. Doors will open at 5 p.m. for various displays, with dinner at 6:15 p.m. The event will include door prizes.

Jeremiah J. Catlin, a retired Army chaplain, will be the speaker. Catlin served with the 4th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division from March 2006 to March 2008 and was deployed to Mosul, Iraq, from October 2006 to December 2007. In November 2007, he was medically evacuated from Iraq with Stage IV melanoma cancer and was informed that the cancer would likely end his life in six months or less. This diagnosis took Catlin to his next duty station at Fort Meade, Md., with the

Warrior Transition Unit to seek medical care through Johns Hopkins. After three surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy, he received a clean bill of health in March 2009. He was allowed to return to active duty in June 2009 and served until his retirement in May 2025.

Catlin’s military awards include the Bronze Star medal, Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Iraq Campaign medal with two campaign stars, the Combat Action Badge, and several other medals.

In November 2007, Catlin saw a ministry need for wounded veterans to get into the outdoors. This vision became the foundation for a nonprofit ministry, Chappy’s Outdoors Inc., which has supported more

than 1,600 wounded, ill, and injured veterans in 24 states over the past 17 years.

SINGING SPRING FOODS

As the society grew, Joan stepped back to allow younger historians to carry on her early work, thus assuring that the early enthusiasm for township history would not waver. But she was still there when needed for advice and support.

In another section of the history book, Joan wrote, “Most of all, I want people to see the connections. Lives, land and livelihoods are inextricably woven to create the design of Salisbury Township. Each one of us who make the township our home has a sacred duty to know it, care for it, preserve it and make wise decisions about its use.”

Joan passed away on Jan. 4, leaving behind her loving family and hundreds of those whose lives were touched by her gentle nature, her deep desire to equate with the past and her eagerness to do the research that keeps that past alive.

Joan’s steadfast belief in the importance of remembering the past continues to be the catalyst for the society’s activities. Joan dreamed of a museum to display the treasures of Salisbury Township’s past, and this year that will be accomplished, with an opening date set for spring.

Joan, we salute you with this gift, proof that your dream could become a reality.

FFA reporter, recalled receiving her jacket. “My ninth-grade year I was chosen for a scholarship jacket. The people who provide the scholarships are from the community,” she explained. “For me, it was really special. It was a huge welcome into FFA, and it was a great way to get a jacket.”

The seniors who earned their Keystone Degrees were Grace Melson, Sierra Langston, Josie Gielenz and Bella Biddle. According to www.paffa.org, Keystone Degree recipients must demonstrate exceptional leadership and agriculture proficiency and complete an SAE (supervised agricultural experience) community service project.

Additionally, six FFA members - Grace Melson, Sierra Langston, Cole Faus, Kelsey Della Rova, Bella Biddle and Mia Nordhoff - represented the chapter in the Ag Issues Forum Contest, showcasing their teamwork and knowledge of current agricultural topics. The team placed first in the state contest and will travel to the National Convention to compete at nationals this fall.

“The purpose of the contest is for the team to come up with their own agricultural issue they want to share with others. They do their research, get their facts and data and share the pros and cons of that issue in a creative way in front of judges,” explained club adviser Jasmine VanSant, agricultural science

teacher. “The idea is to address relevant issues in the community.”

She explained that each team has 15 minutes to do a presentation in front of the judges using props and technology. “They can do a presentation in whatever format they want. In this case, our team put together a skit. Their skit was about artificial intelligence and how it is used in agriculture,” said VanSant. “Their skit was a classroom setting. There was a teacher and students, and the students shared their research of pros and cons of the use of AI in agriculture.”

FFA is open to Pequea Valley Secondary School students who are taking an agriculture class. When a student enrolls in agricultural education, he or she becomes an FFA member, with no dues and no application required. FFA used to be an organization just for farmers but now aims to assist those who are interested in various agricultural careers.

“It has evolved. We are still battling some of that stigma that it is just for farmers,” said VanSant. “Students are not necessarily from a farm. They are exposed to careers in

Lancaster provides an opportunity for Brubaker to maintain an active creative life and work with other creative people. She particularly relies on board chair Joanna Underhill, a longtime friend and theatrical collaborator, for keeping the organization thriving.

“She’s been active in the Lancaster performing arts scene since 1996, and she’s the one who first brought up the idea of doing ‘Sock Puppet Psycho,’ our very first sock puppet show,” Brubaker said.

Brubaker hopes audiences will continue to support the nonprofit’s work, and she encourages newcomers to check out a performance.

agriculture in the classes. We (recently) did a career exploration on large animal science and discussed what are pathways they could take.”

“The goal is to expose learners to opportunities and careers that meet their passions,” she added. “If it is a passion of yours, how can you turn that into a career? We help them get internships, discuss which colleges offer degrees in agriculture, etc.”

The group is currently preparing for FFA Week, to be held during the last week of February. “Here at school, we try to do different

things,” said Josie, FFA vice president. “One day we bring in livestock. Lauren brought her goats in. We also do teacher appreciation (activities) and Spirit Week. One of my favorites is jersey day, where you can wear a jersey from a sports team or dress as a Jersey cow. We also do community service. We have a taco bar, and (proceeds) get donated straight to the food bank at The Factory Ministries.”
