bilitation will hold a special event to remember its “rock star.”
It will be a bittersweet occasion.
Acorn Acres had originally planned a 10th birthday party for its squirrel ambassador Snags, but Snags died on Sept. 3. It will now be a celebration of life for the revered rodent.
An open house will be held Sunday, Sept. 21, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Acorn Acres, 2100 Stone Mill Road, Lancaster. There is no admission charge. Registration is requested; go to https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ ticketing/snags-the-squirrels-10th -birthday-party to sign up.
“We would normally have an annual open house,” said Acorn Acres’ founder and executive director Betsy Shank. “When we moved into the building last year, we had one (last) November, and
The inaugural occasion was such a big success that the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce (SLCCC) will host its second annual Professional Development Conference. The event will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at DoubleTree Resort Lancaster, 2400 Willow Street Pike.
Tickets for SLCCC members and people from the community are on sale through Friday, Oct. 3. Community members will receive a coupon to use on their membership if they decide to join the group.
Go to https://southernlan casterchamber.org/conference/ to purchase tickets.
SLCCC conference committee chair Jadan Willis said the event is designed for small business owners and nonprofit organizations.

Take a trip back to a time more than a century ago at the Conestoga Area Historical Society’s Fall Harvest Festival.
The annual event will be held Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 28, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Conestoga Area Historical Society, 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga.
There is no charge for admission; donations will be accepted. The event will be canceled if there is severe weather. Go to www.pennmanorhistory.org for more information.
“It’s a two for one,” said Willis. “It’s education and networking built into one event, and it’s affordable, and it’s efficient because you can cram a lot of value into a six-hour day. It’s customized to you in the sense that you can pick your own classes and then also meet new people, whether they’re members of our chamber or are other guests, because we will have a lot of networking time between the breakfast and the lunch and then in between sessions as well.”
SLCCC president Kristen Phipps added, “The networking is a big thing, bringing in a variety of business members and also professionals. It’s not necessarily only geared towards business owners, but also if you’re a professional and you work for a

we decided at that point that we would hold an open house annually. This year, since Snags was turning 10, we decided to do it a little bit early and tie it in with her 10th birthday because who gets to go to a squirrel’s birthday party? She died, so now we’re like, ‘Well, what are we going to do?’ I thought, wait a minute. She educated over 50,000 people. She was the only harness-trained ambassador squirrel in the entire state. She did a commercial, which still isn’t released. She has been the face of squirrel rehab in Lancaster County for 10 years, and that is something big to celebrate. And we’re going to do it and still have cake.”
Snags had a big impact on others during her 10 years. “She taught people,” Shank said. “It’s not often you see a squirrel in a harness that was OK in front of people. She used to walk in

There will be demonstrations in tinsmithing, pottery making, woodworking, weaving, cobbling, spinning and drying, blacksmithing, rifle making, rug making, flintknapping, basket weaving, hat making, and tape loom weaving.
“The craftspeople are the highlight,” said Conestoga Area Historical Society vice president Jim Kauffman. “They show how they do their crafts, and we let them sell things if they want to sell their crafts.”
There will be activities for children, including face painting. Cherry Hill Orchards donates pumpkins for kids to paint. “We have a couple ladies that guide them through their painting their pumpkins, and then they can take it home,” said Kauffman. “And there’s a rope maker that comes and lets kids help make ropes.”
A volunteer will make cookies for sale in an old-time beehive bake oven. There will also be slices of homemade pie for sale.
Nanalyn’s Catering will sell brisket

sandwiches, barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks.
The historical society has Conestoga wagons and recently received a donation of a Jenny Lyn carriage. The organization also has a farm wagon it is making into a prairie schooner.
“A lot of people come here and they say, ‘Oh, we’ve seen pictures of Conestoga wagons out in the west and on the prairies,’” Kauffman said.
“The Conestoga wagons didn’t go probably beyond the Mississippi (River) because they were too big, and it took too many animals to pull them. They had a prairie schooner.
We have a smaller-type farm wagon, and we have the bows we’re going to put the top on so we can show people the difference between a prairie schooner and other kinds of wagons.”
Visitors will also have the chance to visit a broom maker’s shop, a tannery building with an exhibit of local furs, a big display of stuffed animals from the area, and a decoy museum.
The Conestoga Area Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history of Conestoga, Manor, Martic, and Pequea townships, and
Millersville Borough.
The museum will be open every Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. through Sunday, Dec. 14. Volunteers are present to guide visitors around the premises.
Kauffman noted that there are 250 members of the organization, which offers life memberships, annual memberships, and family memberships. Members receive a quarterly newsletter.
“We’re trying to promote the history of the Penn Manor School District,” said Kauffman. “It was originally started as just a kind of Conestoga historical society, and then later, they wanted to broaden it out a little bit. Basically, it’s a Penn Manor area historic society. We just want people to come and see their heritage and see what it was like 100 years ago, 200 years ago.”
It will all be on display during the Fall Harvest Festival. “It’s just always a lot of things going on,” said Kauffman. “There’s always a lot of interest and a lot of people. It’s amazing how many people show up and say, ‘I didn’t know this place was here.’”

larger company. You will be able to network with other folks in the area and learn something applicable that you can walk away with. We want people to be able to go back to their business or back to their company and have some tactics that they can start working in their business right away.”
Attendees will be able to choose three of the five one-hour workshops. “We did come up with some topics, had people vote, and then we did the same thing this year, and we also took feedback from last year to incorporate to this year,” said Willis. “We wanted to make sure that the content was tailored to our membership, even though the conference is open to people outside of our membership as well, so that we were on point
in delivering content that people want to see. We also want to provide a variety because this isn’t specifically just a marketing conference, so not all of it is marketing related. We want it to be applicable to businesses of all sizes, whether you’re a solopreneur or you have 10 employees.”
The workshops are “Avoiding HR Nightmares” with speaker Leslie Wireback of Wireback Works, “Budgeting” with speaker Kyle Beltle of Proactive CPA, “Customer Experience: Deliver 5-Star Service That Keeps People Talking & Sending You Referrals!” by Cody Helm of Helm Construction Company, “Decode & Deliver: Selling to Every Personality Style With Confidence” with speaker Sheila Jones of Whicked Results, and “Step Back to Move Forward: Planning with Clarity & Intent” by Matt Musser with Rooted Growth Strategies.
south of Route 30 line.”
“We wanted to focus on having expert-led workshops,” Willis said. “The people that we have speaking are professionals in that field that they’re speaking on.”
After the workshops, there will be a panel discussion about artificial intelligence.
“It’s affordable, buffet lunch, and it’s local,” Willis said of the conference. “We’ve found that with a lot of conferences, you are going to Philly or Baltimore, big cities, and you are traveling. We wanted to make something hyperlocal, so that it’s accessible to everyone, both location-wise and pricing-wise.”
The SLCCC chose to host a professional development conference after receiving a grant. “We applied to a grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation, and we got a grant for $5,000,” Phipps said. “One of the things we said with was that we would love to have a professional development conference right here in Lancaster. It could be costly to travel to Philly, travel to Harrisburg, some of these bigger cities, and we really wanted to bring something close to home geared towards small businesses and something very affordable. A lot of the times attending conferences can be in the thousands of dollars just to get tickets, not including travel when staying overnight. With the Lancaster County Community Foundation grant, we were able to do that, and it was such a success we want to keep it going.”
There are no geographic restrictions. “We like to say that our primary area is south of Route 30, but we have members from all over,” Phipps said. “We do have some crossover folks that are in the northern end of the county. We have some from the neighboring counties. We’ve had guests come up from like the Maryland area, so it’s not only geared towards the southern net, but that’s primarily where we focus our marketing, and are the school districts that we support with our scholarships are
The conference is an ideal fit for the group’s goals. “We revamped our mission and our core values this year, which is really exciting,” said Phipps. “We really want to create affordable opportunities. I think that affordability fits in with our entrepreneurial spirit. We want to be approachable. We know that a lot of businesses just starting out don’t always have several hundred dollars to invest in being a part of a chamber, so keeping our membership dues low is really important to us, and then keeping our events free or low cost is incredibly important to us as well, without sacrificing quality of course.”

Before that, I spent a decade working for Swatch in Puerto Rico, where I was a Junior Brand Manager. My desire to grow led to my first promotion with the company a year later, when I became the Assistant Deli Manager at the Lititz Pike Fresh Foods. the Millersville parade. She was very comfortable in large group settings, and you don’t get to see a squirrel six inches from your face. She was fine with the kids getting close enough to actually see her whiskers and her eyelashes. We would show how she had, you know, four fingers on the front and five toes on the back.”
Snags visited schools and assisted living facilities and attended community events. “She’s been in bars (for an Acorn Acres event),” said Shank. “She’s been to Home Depot and Lowe’s. She was a regular at That Fish Place - That Pet Place. If you just saw a woman walking in with a squirrel, it was probably me with Snags. She’s been everywhere. She got booked for events in New York and in New Jersey. We’ve been all over the United States. She was a pretty fabulous little educator.”
Visitors will see photos of Snags adorning the walls of Acorn Acres while touring the building. “We’ll have all the other ambassadors and residents around that people can meet and see,” Shank said. “We’ll be announcing our two newest residents that we hope to turn into ambassadors. We’re going to have cornhole. We’re going to have a version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, only it’s going to be Pin the Squirrel on (the famous painter) Bob Ross, who had
several pet squirrels.”
There will be activities for children, and adults will have the opportunity to taste what Shank calls a “special squirrel wine.” There will be a taco bar and cake. “We’ve been here a year now, and we will let people see what we do, and
we’re just we’re just going to celebrate. I’ll have different facts about Snags up and around, and the whole team will be talking about, you know, stuff that she did.”
Donations for the Acorn Acres clinic are not required but would be appreciated. The wish list includes paper towels, detergent, dishwasher pods, tissues, and toilet paper.

Shank noted that Acorn Acres rehabilitates orphaned, ill, abandoned, and injured prey animals and Virginia opossums. “Our goal is to get them fixed, raised, healthy, and then get them back outside to their native or natural habitat,” said Shank. “And when we’re not doing that, we go out and do education with our ambassadors.”
