Two adorable groundhogs. The second day of February. Two predictions. Two functions. Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation will celebrate Groundhog Day with a pair of parties.
The organization’s “chief chuck,” Elliott, will make his official prognostication during a get-together on Monday, Feb. 2, at Conestoga House & Gardens, 1608 Marietta Ave., Lancaster.
The festivities will run from 9 to 11 a.m. It is a ticketed event, but there is no charge for admission. Event tickets and tickets for parking are available by going to www.acornacreswr.com and clicking on the Programs/Events tab. The deadline to register is Saturday, Jan. 31, at noon.
There are only 30 tickets for parking available. An overflow lot will be located at the Grace Baptist Church lot entrance off Marietta Avenue. There will not be a shuttle bus.
“It’s just like a meet-and-greet,” said Betsy Shank, Acorn Acres’ founder and executive director. “There will be photo ops with groundhogs, and bagels, cream cheese, and coffee will be provided.”
Elliott will make his official prognostication at 10 a.m. Two identical bowls with the same snack placed in each will be put in front of the red-brown

Millersville Borough is going through a phase.
Its plan to renovate Freedom Memorial Park was finalized last year, and the first part of the work is underway.
“It was a long process that our park commission went through in order to get ourselves prepared to start going after some grant funding in order to make some improvements to the park,” borough manager Rebecca DeSantis-Randall said. “Our park commission went through the process of working with a consultant to do some visioning, and we did some public outreach to figure out what sort of vision we had for the park going forward.”

Troy Landis noted that Immerse International serves two major purposes.
“One is the housing, mostly for international students, who are here studying, and they mostly do not study here in this English program,” said Landis, the director of education for the organization that is located at 321 Manor Ave., Millersville.
“Mostly they are students at Millersville (University) or HACC or (people who are) work ing locally.”
“Then there’s the intensive English language program. That is for international students who came just to study, and they need a little more English before they can get to university, or local immigrant and refugee folks who settled here and are looking to get to

The tempo of the task will depend on money. Once plans were finalized, the borough began seeking grant funding to bring the project to fruition. The borough recently learned it had been awarded a $75,000 grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development’s Greenway Trails and Recreation grant program. Then the borough was notified it had been granted $373,200 from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program administered by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).
“We’re very grateful for that,” said DeSantis-Randall.
Phase one of the six-phase process involves focusing on accessibility improvements to

Shortly after purchasing our business, we met our local rep. Jacob was professionally persistent and got us on board with our first publication. We saw results - more than we expected or hoped for. The ad was beautiful, in front of the right demographic and it made a difference. We have consistently purchased spots since then and have zero regrets on any of it. We are very thankful for EPC and Jacob!

marmot. One side will be labeled “spring” and the other “winter.” “Whatever bowl he consumes food from (first) is his prognostication,” said Shank. It will be livestreamed on Acorn Acres’ Facebook page. Elliott’s little sister, Lilly, will also attempt to make a forecast.
“It’s two live groundhogs, and it’s a Pennsylvania tradition that is over 245 years old,” said Shank. “It’s one of those things where it’s just fun. There’s heart, there’s humor, there’s compassion.”
Acorn Acres’ Groundhog Day Party will be held later that night, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Tellus 360, 24 E. King St., Lancaster. This event is also free, but tickets are required.
has called the winner three years in a row.”
Elliott researches his selection during the playoffs. “He does study,” Shank said. “He’s been known to watch a game or two while he’s figuring out what he’s going to do.”
Proceeds will benefit Acorn Acres. “It is a fundraiser for us, but we’re in Pennsylvania,” said Shank. “This is a big day for us, and I have two live, really, really cute groundhogs. So why would I not have them prognosticate? This is purely for fun.”
Shank said Acorn Acres is the “first and only nonresidential or commercial wildlife rehabilitation education facility in Lancaster County.”

At 7 p.m., Elliott will make his prediction for the NFL championship game using the same process as he had for his prognostication that morning.
“The biggest, most important moment is Elliott doing his prognostication for the (title game),” Shank said. “I’m not telling people that they need to wager on things, but my groundhog
She added, “We specialize in the rehabilitation of your common backyard prey mammals. Everything from mouse to beaver. And Virginia opossums. Virginia opossums are not considered prey animals. They’re opportunistic carnivores, but we’re the only one in the county that is openly and actively rehabilitating them because they’re so critically important to our entire environment.”
Acorn Acres also has an education room and holds several events throughout the year. “We have a lot of open houses where we bring the community into a wildlife rehabilitation facility so they can see what it is and where we do our work,” Shank said. “Nobody knows about wildlife rehabilitation until they need it, and then they have suddenly have all these questions. We open up this entire building to let people see so they understand where their dollars are going and what we’re doing.”

that kind of university level of English,” said Landis. “The mission of the whole organization is to create a community and belonging for our international students and neighbors, so that kind of encompasses both of those.”
Immerse International is designed to prop up people from around the globe. “It’s important because I think it creates a community of belonging for our international friends and students who come here, so they have support so that they have friends from around the world and have friends from the United States also,” said Landis. “As a faith-based organization, it’s a community that’s built on the love of God, and hopefully they can feel that and sense that and know that too. It’s a holistic kind of community wanting to support them.”
The property was developed in 1909 as the Mennonite Children’s Home and was known as the Millersville International House in 1987, Landis said. “It was an orphanage for 50 or 60 years until social services moved to foster care and shut down the orphanages,” he added. “Then in the ’80s, Eastern Mennonite Missions acquired the property and created a home for international students, so that they could feel welcome here, feel
safe here, supported here. That’s still what the house is.”
Landis works mostly with the English program, which started 15 years ago, and he is on the leadership team for the whole organization. “The English program, specifically, is really helping people bridge the gap from kind of social English to like a university- or professional-level English,” he said. “That’s really where our niche has been, helping people who want a more intensive academic focus be here. We’ve had great, great success.”
Landis is the only fulltime employee, and he is aided by six part-time workers. There are typically between 18 and 23 people living in the house and about the same number in the English program. Some are doing both.
There are perks for those living in the international house. “We have community meals twice a month where everybody kind of gathers to eat together,” said Landis. “And there’s a lot of informal gatherings that happen. We provide some local field trips or outings together that we do, just to help them get to know the community, introducing them to different options, people that can be helpful. We provide
sities or next-step kind of things for them.”
Anyone interested in residing in the international house or getting English lessons can go to www.immerse-us.com and click “Apply Now.”
“We have some available rooms, so people can check that out or they could just stop by for a tour,” Landis said.
Volunteers are welcome. “Sometimes there’s a need for English tutoring with our students outside the classroom or to help them take them places, show them around, get them accustomed to the place,” said Landis.
There are also several other ways community members can help. “We have a 10-acre campus, so part of our hospitality and welcome is providing a place of beauty, of rest, of green, but it’s also a lot of work to keep up,” said Landis. “We’re always looking for mowers in the summer, people for light landscaping and maintenance, kind of like any other facility. If there’s volunteer hours that people want to do, definitely get in touch. We can always use extra hands.”
He added that there is a scholarship fund for people who want to study at Immerse International full time but don’t have the financial means. “If anybody’s interested in being a part of that and assisting someone on their educational journey, they can do that here through Immerse too,” said Landis.

The Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, has announced the return of its annual Feeding School Kids initiative.
Marking its sixth year, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their CHOICE points into a donation for their local public school districts’ food programs now through Tuesday, March 31. To launch the program, the Giant Company will donate $100,000.
Through Feeding School Kids, public school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries and establishing garden programs.
In 2025, for example, the Frederick County School District in Maryland put funds toward food costs for its Bright Futures weekend food pack program that feeds 1,500 kids each week; the State College School District directed funding to cover student lunch debt and to rent a mobile refrigeration unit for its Summer Lunch program, serving nearly 7,000 meals; and the York Suburban School District used funds to cover food expenses for its Impact Pantry for one year, serving 70 families twice a month.

Landis provided anecdotal evidence of Immerse International’s achievements. A couple years ago, a Cuban doctor named Roberto was in the area working in a warehouse. “He came here for a year and a half, studied while working second shift, taking care of his family, and then he was able to get into Penn State’s nursing program, and now he’s at the nurse practitioner program here at Millersville,” said Landis. “He really credits his time in the English program with kind of unlocking those doors for him. That’s just one little snapshot of why this program is so important, not only for the people, but also for our community,

Raven Ridge Wildlife Center has received a 2025 CLEAN Environment Award from Constellation, a producer of emissions-free energy. The grant will support constructing duck pens and acquiring critical support incubators, which increases the ability to house more animals and take in more baby animals.
The initiative is part of Constellation’s commitment to environmental stewardship and creating cleaner, healthier communities. A total of 34 nonprofits received grants through The Constellation Foundation, which partnered with the company’s environmental and sustainability teams to select the projects, which include construction and refurbishment of wildlife enclosures, urban tree planting initiatives, living shoreline installations, and youth
nature programs.

the park, as well as working on a new restroom. New playground equipment will be added to the section designed for kids ages 2 to 5.
“If we can get the money for it, our plan is to bang that out in the first phase,” DeSantis-Randall said, adding that the goal is to use additional state funding. “(The aim is) to carry it out between next year and this year.”
The other five phases include resurfacing the skatepark and basketball courts and adding an adult fitness station and possibly pickleball courts. “We’re also hoping to add a walking path from the lower parking lot all the way to the furthest baseball field to help make that baseball

field more accessible,” said DeSantis-Randall. “A community garden is part of that as well. We got some interest from that from the community during our public outreach during part of the master planning process. Then we also want to add some additional playground equipment for ages 5 to 12.” Another goal is to connect the park to any of the local trails.
The borough is trying to adhere to the wishes of the public. “We heard from the park commission and from community members about the different areas of interest,” said DeSantis-Randall. “In working with the consultant, we tried to make sure that all of that was included in the plan in some way, shape, or

form, so that we’re able to hopefully meet everybody’s needs.”
DeSantis-Randall noted that the entire project is expected to last approximately five years. The borough is not currently seeking contributions from the community. “Our thought right now is let’s see what we can get grant funding-wise and see what we’re

able to match with,” said DeSantis-Randall. “Then at that point, we will see if we want to be able to bring in community members or community organizations to help fund different parts of it. We want it to be a cohesive process and not just sort of piecemeal. We’re hoping to be able to bring the community in on that part of it once we’re solidified about what type of grant funding we’re getting for phase one.”
DeSantis-Randall added, “We’re really excited about the opportunity to bring more things to the park and be able to fit a lot of different people’s needs and interests and really continue to make Freedom Memorial Park a focal point of the borough, a focal point for visitors to the borough.”
In other news from the borough, Millersville is continuing with its Hometown Heroes banners after a successful first year. “We were able to very, very quickly fill all of the (23) spots,” said DeSantis-Randall.
The borough is hoping to add 25 banners in 2026. Applications will be accepted beginning Friday, Jan. 30. Anyone interested can pick up an application at the borough office or go to www.millersville borough.org. The original banners will hang for three years with no need to renew.

“It is first-come, firstserved,” said DeSantis-Randall. “Between how well it was received last year and how many folks have been calling and asking about when we’re opening up this year, we’re hoping to fill those spots relatively quickly.”
The applicant and/or the person being honored must be a Millersville Borough resident. “We read the names of all of banner (honorees) at our Veterans Day ceremony,” DeSantis-Randall said.
