The Oxford Area Historical Association will present “Lest We Forget,” a program about the World War I armistice by speaker Bob Ford, on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. The program will take place in the hall at Oxford Presbyterian Church, 6 Pine St., Oxford. Light refreshments will be served. The program will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the armistice of World War I. The public is invited to attend. SUPPORT GROUP

will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. at the West Grove Friends Meeting House, 153 E. Harmony Road, West Grove. The meeting date reflects a departure from the group’s regular meeting schedule. The change was made due to Thanksgiving. The Compassionate Friends is a self-help support organization that has a mission to assist bereaved families toward the positive resolution of grief following the death of any child of any age and to help others be supportive. All bereaved parents, grandparents and siblings are welcome to attend the meetings to participate or just to listen. Attendees may bring a friend or relative. The New London Area Historical Society and the Franklin Township Historical Commission will jointly sponsor a free talk by Roberta McManus, “When the Great Influenza Pandemic Struck Southeast Pennsylvania,” on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. at the New London Academy, 902 State Road, Lincoln University. McManus, a former teacher in Oxford, will tell the story of the havoc the influenza virus caused as World War I ended and how hard-hit communities in southeastern Pennsylvania fought back. The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served afterward.

Lighthouse Dinner, Auction Event Marks 30 Years By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

The 30th annual Lighthouse Youth Center (LYC) Fall Harvest Dinner and Auction will take place on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10. The fundraiser will begin on Nov. 9 with the dinner, auction preview and silent auction from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Oxford Presbyterian Church fellowship hall. The menu will feature pulled pork with barbecue sauce, baked potatoes, green beans, creamed mushrooms, applesauce, a cupcake and a beverage. The dinner will be served until sold out. W h i l e a t t h e h a l l fo r d i n n e r , attendees will find a number of items available by silent auction, plus they may preview items that will be offered at the live auction on the following day. The Nov. 10 auction will begin at

9 a.m. with a wide variety of donated items going up for bids. The big feature item this year is a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox, and there will be Philadelphia Eagles, Flyers and Phillies tickets; gift certificates to local restaurants and entertainment; hardware items; three trailer loads of Amish-made furniture; baked goods; quilts; quillows; and vacations, including a three-day stay in a mountaintop retreat and a week in Chincoteague, Va. A regular feature of the auction is a bidding challenge for tractor fans of Case, John Deere and Kubota. This year, instead of cakes decorated as tractors, there will be groups of c u p cakes in the different tractor company colors. Proceeds from this portion of the auction will be used to help purchase new cafeteria tables for the LYC. The goal for this portion of the auction is $10,000. See Lighthouse pg 2

After Halloween, the demand for pumpkins drops, but the leftovers will be put to good use at the 19th annual Pumpkin Olympics, set for Saturday, Nov. 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Glen Run Valley View Farm in Atglen.
