BLANKET MAKING
Oxford Public Library, 48 S. Second St., Oxford, is offering Make a Difference Monday on Sept. 24 from 5 to 6 p.m. In observance of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, children age 7 and up are invited to stop by the library to make blankets for children undergoing chemotherapy. The Avon Grove Library, 117 Rosehill Ave., West Grove, invites children to practice their literacy skills by reading aloud to a therapy dog on the first Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to noon. The next scheduled sessions will be held on Oct. 6. Ten-minute slots are available for reading aloud to Cooper or Wesley, the library’s Paws for Reading canine partners. 18 Addison St., Oxford, will host an allyou-can-eat buffet breakfast on Saturday, Sept. 22. Breakfast will be served from 7 to 10 a.m. Breakfast will include buttermilk pancakes, French toast, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, sausage, bacon, oven-roasted potatoes, sausage gravy, and specialty breads. Separate costs have been set for adults and for children ages 3 to 10. Tickets will be available at the door and in advance by calling the church office at 610-9329698. Individuals whose birthday is in September may show identification for a free breakfast ticket. UPCOMING MEETING
Young Adult (YA) Book Club for Adults meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at Avon Grove Library, 117 Rosehill Ave., West Grove. The next scheduled event will be on Oct. 16. Participants age 18 and older discuss a different book from the YA genre every month. Sacred Heart To Present Oktoberfest By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
The ninth annual Oktoberfest to benefit Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School will be held during the evening of Saturday, Sept. 22. The Oktoberfest events will take place under a large tent from 6 to 11 p.m. There are just 500 tickets available for Oktoberfest, and the event typically sells out. The event will be preceded by an afternoon of games for the entire family on Sept. 22 and a Family Movie Night on Friday, Sept. 21. The Oktoberfest celebration is a popular adults-only event for the community, and it is the parish’s largest fundraising event of the year. Music will be one of the big features of the Oktoberfest celebration. Live music will be provided by an authentic German band, the Alpenlaenders. There will also be performances by an authentic German dance group from the Philadelphia German Club. See Sacred Heart pg 3
Students from Sacred Heart School in Oxford invite the community to the ninth annual Oktoberfest and Family Fun Day on Sept. 22. In addition, the parish will host a Family Movie Night on Sept. 21.
Club Plans Blues Concert The Friends Folk Club will hold a concert by saxophonist and contemporary blues singer Vanessa Collier on Friday, Sept. 21, at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 116 Lancaster Pike, Oxford. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the concert will start at 7:30 p.m. A food truck will be on-site at 5:30 p.m., so audience members may arrive early to eat dinner outdoors under a canopy before the show. A master musician and multi-instrumentalist, Collier weaves funk, soul, rock, and blues into every performance. She has received a total of three Blues Music Award Nominations for Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year and Horn Player of the Year, a Blues Blast Award nomination, the Jammingest Pro Award bestowed by the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise, first place for lyrics in the International Songwriting Competition and the Best of 2014 Blues Breaker honor on Dan Aykroyd’s BluesMobile.
