Flowers from funerals, weddings and other special events that may be discarded are now being recycled and reused by Petals Please, a newly formed nonprofit organization that presents the fresh flowers to residents of nursing homes, hospices, senior care communities and others. Petals Please was founded in July and already has made an impact in the local community. “ We’ve (distributed) about 1,200 bouquets to date,” said founder Beth Adams. “Flowers are a nice symbol of love, care and support. You get so much more than you give ... when you see the joy on a recipient’s face.” Adams explained that volunteers deconstruct large flower arrangements to create smaller individual bouquets

for distribution. The flowers are placed in pint-sized mason jars, small vases, mugs and teacups. For locations that do not allow glass containers, volunteers use decorated plastic peanut butter jars. Adams said she conceived the idea to form Petals Please after patients in the hospice where she worked received flowers that were left over from an event. “Once I retired from hospice, I decided to do this on a bigger scale,” she noted. Adams said that she is asking local funeral directors to encourage families that lost a loved one to donate large arrangements to Petals Please. “If you think about a funeral service, there are gorgeous displays that are pretty sizeable,” Adams noted. “It’s unsettling to (families) that they have these arrangements that are works of art and they (may) end up in a dumpster.” See Petals Please pg 3
