145 Years And Counting

Jesse Bills, who has been the pastor of Pequea Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church for more than a year now, said the church has a busy fall planned. “We’ve got a lot

going on,” he noted.

The extra activity involves the church’s 145th anniversary. Bills said planning started in earnest in August. “We saw it as an opportunity to celebrate the past and get excited about the future too,” he said.

Halloween

“Itpromises to be a fun day however you choose to be a part of it,” said Parkesburg Lions Club member Robin McKenna when describing all of the Halloween events that will take place in the borough on Saturday, Oct. 29. Activities will include a Halloween Parade, a Trunk or Treat and a Fall Festival.

The annual Parkesburg Lions Club Halloween Parade will step off from the parking lot of A. Duie Pyle, located at 100 S. Limestone Road in Parkesburg, at 4 p.m. Registration will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the parking lot.

The parade will proceed down First Avenue from A. Duie Pyle and end at South Gay Street. Judging will take place in front of the Keystone Valley Fire Department on First Avenue. Awards will be presented at the gazebo in Minch Park immediately following the parade.

“We invite costumed walkers and

riders - adults and children - decorated floats, fire companies, dance and baton troupes, Scout troops, church groups, clubs, local businesses - anyone - to join in the fun,” said McKenna.

After the awards presentation, the Parkesburg Lions will host a Trunk or Treat on the blacktop in Minch Park. The Trunk or Treat will begin between 4:45 and 5 p.m. and run through 6 p.m.

Community members are invited to participate. Vehicle owners will be asked to decorate their trunks and hand out treats to children. Decorations and treats are the responsibility of each vehicle owner. “Last year was the first year for this event, and it proved to be successful with over 300 children in attendance,” McKenna noted. “This serves as an opportunity for children to safely trick-or-treat.”

To preregister for the parade or to register a vehicle for the Trunk or Treat, contact McKenna at robin mckenna@comcast.net or Helen

Parkesburg

Leibig at hbkbleibig@comcast.net or message the club via the Parkesburg Lions Club’s Facebook page.

Everybody Plays! - a nonprofit organization that has a goal of revamping Minch Park’s playground to make it equally accessible to all - will hold a Fall Festival in Parkesburg’s Minch Park on Oct. 29 from 1 to 6 p.m. The Parkesburg Lions Club will have a table at the festival, where club members will sell Gertrude Hawk candy bars.

The club will also offer visitors a chance to win a Philadelphia Eagles mini helmet autographed by linebacker Nakobe Dean; the helmet comes with a certificate of authenticity. A fee will be charged per ticket. The winner need not be present. Proceeds from the drawing will go toward the Everybody Plays! playground project.

The day will conclude with fireworks presented by the Parkesburg Area Special Events Committee. Minch Park will be the viewing spot for fireworks, which will begin around 8 p.m.

A Fall Festival, featuring live entertainment, children’s activities, food and more, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 1 to 7 p.m. at Minch Park, 111 West St., Parkesburg. The first-time event is being presented by Everybody Plays! - a new community organization that is looking to renovate the playground at Minch Park so that it is accessible to children of all abilities.

Adventure

Members of Atglen Boy Scout Troop 20 recently took time to reflect on their High Adventure camping trip to Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada, which took place from Aug. 8 to 20. Algonquin Provincial Park, which covers 3,000 square miles and includes 2,400 lakes and 600 miles of streams and rivers, is noted for its wildlife, which includes a large population of moose. During the trip, Scouts and their leaders took part in activities such as canoeing, hiking, fishing and cooking over an open fire.

“It was a hard trip, particularly the portages (carrying watercraft or cargo over land),” said David Hook, a ninth-grader at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. “The views were awesome, (especially) the sunsets and sunrises.” David said that he would recommend the experience to other Scouts.

Bennett Miller, a 10thgrader at Collegium Charter School, said he was impressed with the peaceful

solitude that the campers experienced. “The views were great, and we went five days without seeing anyone else. It was silent in some areas,” he said. Bennett said he would also recommended the experience. “I would recommend it for a seasoned Scout - definitely a cool trip,” he said.

“It was a lot harder than I expected, but I would do it again,” added Sean Letz, a ninth-grader at Commonwealth Charter Academy. “It was fun seeing a moose swimming - pretty cool.”

“It was a lot of fun. It’s definitely more on the challenging side,” added Gavin Preising, a 12th-grader at Octorara Junior-Senior High School.

According to www.scout ing.org, High Adventure trips generally include camping for several days in remote settings and challenging oneself to complete outdoor activities such as rock climbing, hiking and operating watercraft.

Atglen Troop 20 is already preparing for its next High Adventure trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico in the summer of 2023.

Philmont Scout Ranch, the largest national High Adventure Base offered by the Boy Scouts of America, has 36 staffed backcountry camps scattered throughout the 140,171-acre property. While there, Scouts will take part in rock climbing, horseback riding, mine tours and living history programs. The Philmont property also serves as the

national training center for the Boy Scouts of America and is home to the National Scout Museum.

Boys interested in joining Atglen Scout Troop 20 are welcome to visit during any regular meeting. Meetings are held at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, 406 Main St., Atglen, on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

County Health Survey Posted

The Chester County Health Department (CCHD) recently launched its community health assessment survey to assess the health and wellbeing of those who live, work, or go to school in Chester County. The assessment, conducted every three years, creates an opportunity to improve the health of Chester County residents. The information collected will help identify community strengths, prioritize health needs, and guide the development of a community health improvement plan.

The community health assessment is an opportunity for residents to let their voices be heard about what matters most to them. A goal of the Chester County Health Department is to focus on issues and initiatives that communities feel are important. The assessment will be used to develop better, more accessible and equitable community health programs and services throughout Chester County.

The community health and

wellness survey was developed with input from Chester County Health Department representatives, including nurses, health educators, grant administrators, emergency preparedness planners, and environmental specialists.

The survey takes a few minutes to complete and asks questions about demographics, health behaviors, and issues that impact the overall health of Chester County communities. Relevant topics, such as climate change and COVID-19, were added to this year’s survey. Everyone age 15 and older who lives, works, or goes to school in Chester County is encouraged to complete the survey by Sunday, Nov. 6.

The survey is available in English at bit.ly/Healthy Chesco2022. A Spanish version is also available at bit.ly/SaludChesco2022. The results of the assessment will be shared with the community in 2023.

WCU Professor Wins Science Prize

West Chester University (WCU) biomorphologist

Frank Fish accepted a 2022 Ig Nobel Prize in a live virtual ceremony on Sept. 15. The Ig Nobels recognize science that makes people laugh, then think. Ten projects from around the world were honored this year.

Fish was recognized for his hydrodynamics research on why ducklings swim in a line behind their mother. By studying ducklings in a tank, Fish found that the birds conserve energy by formation swimming.

A professor of biology and founder and director of WCU’s Liquid Life Laboratory, Fish conducts aquatic research, examining the morphology of swimming things such as whales and dolphins to determine how their fins and flukes affect efficiency, speed, and maneuverability.

A member of the WCU faculty since 1980, Fish has partnered with researchers from other institutions, including Drexel and George Washington universities and

Shoals Marine Laboratory. His work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research and others. Some of that work has been in the design for the propulsion efficiency of underwater robots such as, most recently, a robotic sea lion (created with Drexel), and other robots known as MantaBot and TunaBot.

Pequea Church

Observance of the anniversary will kick off with a community worship service on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 10 a.m. at the church, 5482 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap. E.C. denominational leader Randy Sizemore will travel from the church’s home offices in Myerstown to preach that day. His sermon, titled “Returning to Jerusalem,” will focus on Acts 1:1-12. In addition to Pequea E.C. Church members, worshipers from nearby Mount Airy E.C. Church and Pequea Presbyterian Church will visit for a corporate worship service followed by a fellowship meal.

On Sunday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m., a birthday bash will be held. Mike Sigman, pastor of Grace Community Church in Willow Street, where Bills serves as pastor of discipleship, will bring a short and encouraging message on the subject of partnership, and juggler Chris Ivey will entertain.

On Sunday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m., an old-fashioned hymn sing will be held. The special guest speaker will be Jeff Byerly, who grew up in nearby Cambridge. Bills explained that Byerly just retired from serving for more than 20 years at Bethesda E.C. Church in Schuylkill Haven. “He is a son of this congregation,” said Bills, pointing out that Byerly came to faith at Pequea and was called to ministry from the church.

Bills noted that the Mount Airy congregation represents more than just a neighboring church. “Mount Airy is our mother church,” he explained, noting that, prior to the founding of Pequea E.C. in the fall of 1877, a small group from Mount Airy began holding a Sunday school in an old

schoolhouse in the area.

“Eventually they started this church,” said Bills.

Bills wants residents from the surrounding area to know that those who have been part of the church history are welcome to take part in the celebrations. “We are inviting retired pastors and anyone that has connections from the past to come out and join us,” he said.

Regular Pequea E.C. Sunday services are held at 9 a.m. in person or by livestream at www.pcchurch.online or by searching for “Pequea Church of White Horse” on Facebook.

Fall Festival

“We anticipate having over 30 retail and food vendors,” said Everybody Plays! committee member Sara Rice. “We’ll have performances from the Octorara High School choir, the Melton (Arts and Education) Center, Avon Grove Charter School Dance Company (and the bands) New Damage, A New Wave and Younger Than Charlie. We’ll have a few carnival games, a ‘Date With a Skeleton’ photo booth, kids’ craft stations and an activities course sponsored by The (Parkesburg) POINT.”

The Fall Festival will be one part of a day of activities being planned in and

around the park, including bingo, which will take place from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Parkesburg VFW, 406 Fourth Ave. Tickets will be available at the door, and food and beverages will be available for purchase.

“There will be a baseball tournament at the field. The Parkesburg Lions Club’s annual Halloween Parade and Trunk or Treat is also planned, and the Parkesburg Action Committee, in partnership with some of the Main Street businesses, are hosting a bingo at the VFW around the corner from the park, the proceeds from which will also benefit the playground,” said Rice.

Plans call for the playground’s main structure to be fully wheelchair accessible, which would include a merry-go-round and interactive play panels, both of which could accommodate wheelchair users. The proposed playground would also include a disc swing, where a number of children can swing together, and an area for children with sensory issues who need a break from play. Organizers emphasized that the accessible elements will be included, not separated.

A planning meeting was held on Sept. 14 at the Parkesburg VFW, during which residents were invited

Fund To Award Scholarships

The Health and Welfare Foundation of Southern Chester County invites students who reside in the Avon Grove, Kennett, Octorara Area, Oxford Area and Unionville-Chadds Ford school districts to apply for the Alma Newlin Educational Fund scholarship. This scholarship, previously granted in amounts of $2,000 or more, is awarded to students who are seeking higher education in the human health care field.

Last year, a total of over $100,000 was granted to area students who received this scholarship. Award recipients planned to study

fields such as nursing, medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, sonography, and occupational therapy.

The Alma Newlin Scholarship grants one-time undergraduate awards to collegebound high school seniors, current college students, and adults pursuing continuing education. Also eligible are students entering postgraduate studies, including additional one-time awards to previous scholarship recipients seeking postgraduate education in health care. Students must have an unweighted cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in previous studies and be

Memorial Closes For Renovations

The Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial, located at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, is temporarily closed to the public for structural repairs. The memorial, which was dedicated in 2001, is known as the largest veterans’ memorial located in any of the national cemeteries. It honors those who died in military service since World War II. Renovations are expected to take until June 2023.

The memorial is made of

concrete, granite, and stone. Its structure is generally in good condition but requires repairs and alterations to address areas of damage due to long-term exposure to the elements.

Funded by the state as a public improvement project, the renovations will cost $3.6 million. Specific repairs will include re-anchoring plaques, resetting existing pre-cast concrete, waterproofing walls, replacing flashing and

accepted for study in health care-related professions.

The Alma Newlin Educational Fund was established in 1990 through a bequest from Alma Newlin, a longtime resident of Kennett Square. The fund is administered by the Health and Welfare Foundation of Southern Chester County.

Applications are available at www.hwfscc.org under Funding. All applications and supporting documents must be submitted electronically. For details, contact Dr. Constance Logan at almanewlinscholarshipfund@gmail.com. All applications must be submitted by Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023.

to share their thoughts about the proposed changes.

“The feedback (from the information session) and our continued conversations with the community have been overwhelmingly positive. People love both the idea of what we’re doing and the playground design,” said Rice. “The borough has continued to be supportive, and we recently presented in front of COG (Western Chester County Council of Governments), and other municipalities have expressed interest in working with us in one form or another.”

For more information about the project or the Fall Festival, search for “Everybody Plays” on Facebook.

4-H Horsemanship Clinic Slated

Volunteers are a crucial part of the 4-H program across the state of Pennsylvania. A particular need is in the Horsemanship Skills Program, which is a planned progression of horsemanship and handling skills, with an emphasis on safety and education.

A 4-H Horsemanship Skills Examiner Clinic will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Line It Up Farm, Coatesville. The clinic will include an overview of the 4-H Horsemanship Skills Program, implementation of county programs, testing procedures, records, examiner certification, and practice of skills with youths and horses.

Participants will receive current program information and supporting resources. Sessions will include discussion of frequently asked questions,

suggested activities, program needs, and future program plans.

Volunteers, extension educators, parents, and 4-H alumni are encouraged to attend to learn more about the 4-H Horsemanship Skills Program. Previously trained examiners are encouraged to attend. Volunteers may be involved in hands-on demonstrations, practice of skills, and group discussions.

Participants who wish to be trained as examiners must obtain appropriate clearances and bring a completed Examiner Recommendation Form with their Extension educator’s signature to the clinic.

Preregistration is required by Friday, Nov. 4. Contact Audrey Reith at alr5762 @psu.edu or 610-696-3500 for additional details and volunteer requirements.

Giant Recognized By EPA

The Superior Goal Achievement honor was presented to Giant and other GreenChill Partners during the recent FMI Energy & Store Development Conference.

For the past several years, the Giant Company has been performing refrigerant conversions, installing leak detectors and replacing older refrigeration units, when possible, within its more than 190 stores. The company is also in direct communication with its vendors to repair any refrigerant leaks as quickly as possible.

EPA’s GreenChill is a voluntary partnership with food retailers, system manufacturers and chemical producers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change. GreenChill provides food retailers and other industry stakeholders with information and assistance to transition to environmentally friendlier refrigerants, reduce the amount of refrigerant they use, eliminate refrigerant leaks, implement environmental best practices and adopt green refrigeration technologies. There are 13,515 GreenChill Partner stores throughout the country. For more information on EPA’s GreenChill program, visit www.epa.gov/greenchill.

Area Residents Invited To Spend “An Evening At The Library”

Listening to Intercourse Library board member Michelle Lichty talk about the organization’s upcoming event, it is easy to picture the candlelit and decorated library elegantly appointed with high- and low-top tables awaiting guests in an intimate setting. “When it’s dark, it’s lovely,” said Lichty. “It’s such a nice atmosphere.”

This year’s “An Evening at the Library” will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Intercourse Library, 31 Center St., Intercourse. The Perella Schoolhouse will be open for the event.

Adding to the atmosphere will be Pequea Valley High School music teacher Nathan Bankert, who will tickle the ivories accompanied by a friend for vocal harmonies. “Nathan really adds something to (the event),” said Lichty of the live music.

A variety of food and beverage items will also be served.

Local vendors of cheeses, including Misty Creek Goat Dairy, will provide samples, as will dessert makers, including Michael’s Homestyle Breads, which will donate sticky buns, and M&A Sweet Treats, which will donate mini doughnuts. Cupcakes will be served, and board member Sadie Ebersol will make hot milk cakes.

“Pastry Paradise will donate a sample of their treats,” said Lichty. Pepper Lane Fudge and Sweets at Kitchen Kettle Village will donate candy and Miesse candy will be provided as well. Coffee, tea, and punch will be contributed by Ten Thousand Villages, and local wineries, including Waltz Vineyards, will donate wine samples.

In the past, similar events included a silent auction, but Lichty said that a different type of fundraiser will be held this year. “We will have a giving tree for people to sponsor things,” she explained. “We will ask for sponsors for a number of books or a program.”

Blood Donor Eligibility Criteria Updated

The American Red Cross invites those who spent time in the U.K., Ireland, or France and have never tried to give blood due to concerns over variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), related to mad cow disease, to give blood. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration updated its blood donor eligibility guidance on vCJD, eliminating the deferral for those who spent time in the U.K., Ireland, and France between 1980 and 2001.

In alignment with FDA changes, the Red Cross began accepting donations from individuals who have not tried giving blood before due

to the prior donation criteria. In combination with prior eligibility updates in 2020 for those who spent time in other European countries, this new change effectively eliminates the deferral related to vCJD for all donors.

More people, especially those with type O blood, are urged to donate. Book a time to give by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting www.redcrossblood.org, or by calling 800-733-2767. As a thank you, donors who give through Monday, Oct. 31, will be emailed an electronic gift card to a merchant of their choice.

Lichty is looking forward to seeing members of all segments of the community at the event, including younger and older people and members of the Plain community. “We would like to celebrate our name change back to Intercourse Library,” she noted.

Tickets, which are necessary to attend the event, may be purchased in advance or at the door. Tickets may be purchased at the library or by calling 717-768–3160. More information about the library may be found at www.intercourselib.org.

Sailing In The Wind

Those who drive past the lake at Tel Hai Camp and Retreat in Honey Brook may come across a majestic site - a fleet of model yachts on the water with their colorful sails unfurled.

The sailboats are being operated by members of the Chester Springs Model Yacht Club (CSMYC), which was organized more than 12 years ago to “promote remote-control (RC) sailing and to encourage others to take up the sport, learn and have fun.”

The club currently has 22 members, who sail four times a month at Tel Hai Lake between April and November and take part in competitive races. “We have skilled craftsmen in the group who build their own boats,” noted club commodore John Stoudt, who builds, restores and collects the model yachts. Other members, he noted, buy their boats already assembled.

Club members, who pay a yearly membership fee to participate, come mostly from Chester County, although other members are from Montgomery and Delaware counties and the state of Delaware.

Stoudt explained that the ships are maneuvered on the water by skippers, who use

hand-held battery-operated controllers. “There are two (steering) servos in each boat.

One servo controls the sails, and one the rudder,” he said.

“You have to be a good sailor, understand the boat setup and sometimes do repairs.”

He noted that club members sail various types of ships, including schooners and Chesapeake Bay skipjacks. While racing, club members follow a specific course on the water.

Most recently, CSMYC hosted the 2022 U.S. Vintage Model Yacht Group 2022 National Championship Regatta Series.

During the three-day event, club members and volunteers welcomed more than 30 skippers operating 70 vintage model yachts. The skippers were from 10 states - Delaware,

Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia - as well as Canada. “The boats were all from 1970 or earlier. One of the boats was built in 1934,” Stoudt pointed out.

Like any competitive sport, model yacht racing requires skill and practice, and operators must learn how the wind affects the sail. “It takes a couple of years to get good. To get really good, it takes longer than that,” Stoudt said. “You have to learn which thumb controls the rudder, which thumb controls the sails and what position the thumbs are in. You also have to learn how to read the wind on the water. You want to sail into the wind shifts.”
