“A Waiting Game” Kinzer Fire Company Members Gather To Make Sauerkraut By Ann Mead Ash

Dwight Groff of the Kinzer Fire Company knows his sauerkraut. After all, he remembers the first pork and sauerkraut dinner the fire company held on New Year’s Day in 1978. The main purpose of gathering fire company members in the fall is to make sauerkraut for that meal, but the fire company has found that some area residents do not want to wait until the new year to taste the company’s kraut. “We make a total of five 30-gallon drums and five 50-gallon drums,” explained Groff. “We sell all the 30-gallon drums and two of the 50-gallon drums to the public.” The sauerkraut is scheduled to be sold at the fire company, See Sauerkraut pg 7

Getting ready to enjoy the 13th annual Grace Point Fall Fun Fest are (from left) Ethan Hackett, Aidan King, Claire Hackett, Amelia Hackett, Logan King, and Lincoln Hackett. This year’s trick-or-treat alternative will be held at Grace Point Church in Paradise on Oct. 26.

The Upward Basketball League held at Pequea Baptist Church is such a popular activity for youngsters that this season it will be expanded to include eighth-graders for the first time. Upward Basketball is a nationwide program provided through sponsoring churches. Now offered for boys and girls in first through eighth grades, the program at Pequea Baptist strives to teach skills and teamwork in a safe, fun environment. There is also a faith-based component to the league, with time for devotionals worked into practice sessions. “We’re always trying to teach character traits, such as how do you act and how to speak in a way that reflects your faith (while you are at) school,” See Upward Basketball pg 9

Youths like Eliana Walton enjoy playing Upward Basketball at Pequea Baptist Church. This year the program has been expanded to include eighth-graders.
