What started out as an effort by church members at Parkesburg Mennonite Church to teach people how to sew has evolved into Sew Much Love, a group that creates handmade items for various charities, including prayer shawls, comforters and pillowcases for hospitalized children.
All are welcome to attend the Sew Much Love gatherings, which are held on the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon in the church’s fellowship hall. Sewers of all experience levels are welcome, as well as those with no experience.
“We have people with various skills,” said Sheila Williamson, one of the group’s founders. “If you can tie a knot, you are welcome. We have people who just come to knot comforters.”
One of the group’s main projects
is to create pillowcases, featuring kid-friendly fabrics, for patients at Penn State Health Center Children’s
Hospital in Hershey. “We get the fabric, and I cut (it to size), and different people sew them together,”

Community members are welcome to visit WordUP Ministries on Sunday, Oct. 26, when the church will host a chili cook-off. The complimentary lunch will also include grilled cheese sandwiches, desserts and beverages.
Activities will take place at 11:45 a.m., immediately after the 10:45 a.m. church service. Visitors to the first-time event will be able to taste a number of chili dishes made by church members.

Chester County Connect Care (CCCC), a nonprofit medical care pregnancy center, will present its annual 5K Run/Walk for Life, on Saturday, Nov. 8, rain or shine, at Hibernia County Park in Coatesville.
In addition to the 5K, this year’s event will include a fun run/walk, a Pup Station for dogs, a Diaper Derby for toddlers and a petting zoo.
Race-day registration will open at 8 a.m., followed by a welcome at 8:30 a.m. The Diaper Derby
“The ladies of the church are putting this together,” said pastor Buck Mowday, noting that the event will take place in the church’s café. “We will have at least seven different pots of chili. We will have little sheets of paper (where people can vote) for their favorite.” He noted that chili that may spicy will be clearly marked.
The latest activity is part of the church’s effort to promote camaraderie among church members and the community.
“We are always trying to figure out ways that WordUP can be involved in our community,” said Mowday. “Our café opens at 10 a.m. There will be snacks that morning and coffee before the service. We do that every Sunday. On the first Sunday of every month, we have a breakfast, and that is open to (the community) at 9:45 a.m. And it not just sandwiches. It could be
scrambled eggs, steak and eggs or pancakes.”
The Sunday service is casual and contemporary and includes a message, readings from Scripture and worship music. “We offer practical (information) that you can apply when you go home through the week,”
Mowday stated. “We talk about Scripture, but practical ways to fulfill those Scriptures in your life.”
WordUP started as Soup, Sandwich and Talk events that were held at the Gap Fire Company. Each program included a variety of free soups and sandwiches with a short sermon. The programs were the predecessor to the creation of WordUp Community Ministries in 2018.
“We are the church; the building is not the church,” said Mowday. “And the church is not just the service. Church is happening in our café way before we come together to worship the Lord. We are big into relationships. It is part of our vision.”
He said that first-time visitors are especially welcome to check out what WordUP Ministries has to offer. “People here are very friendly. We have a great group of people,” Mowday added. “We have greeters downstairs and upstairs when you come in.”
WordUP is located at 160 Route 41, Gap, on the second floor of the Dutchland Inc. building. An elevator is available.

Bird-in-Hand Stage, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, has announced its schedule for the upcoming 2026 show season. It includes two new shows and one popular favorite from Blue Gate Musicals as well as a Ryan & Friends musical comedy variety show.
The 2026 season will launch on Thursday, April 2, 2026, with the debut of a brand-new show, “Ned and Nancy See America.” The plot of the musical comedy revolves around a retired couple on the RV vacation of a lifetime. They travel from one hilarious disaster to the next, reliving old memories and making new ones - and all roads lead to a surprise ending. The show will run through Saturday, July 25, 2026.
Also in April, popular entertainer Ryan Bomgardner will return to the Bird-in-Hand Stage with “Ryan & Friends: Laughter in Lancaster,” a lighthearted look at life in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Opening on Thursday, April 9, and running through Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, the variety show features fan-favorite characters as well as Ryan’s signature ventriloquism, comedy skits and parody songs in styles ranging from country to Broadway.
On Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026, “Dear Soldier Boy” will return to the Bird-inHand Stage. Written by
Martha Bolton, with songs by Wally Nason, the show is set in 1990 when Iraq invaded Kuwait. A young Amish girl and her friend volunteer to write letters of encouragement to the American troops. Several
soldiers out on a weekend pass decide to surprise the girls at the cheese shop where they work - all on the same day. This musical comedy will run through Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026.
The season will close
with another new show from Blue Gate Musicals.
“The Christmas Rush” will open on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026. As the stores prepare to close on Christmas Eve, a recently widowed salesgirl and her daughter
are desperately seeking the one special thing about Christmas. Down to their last dime and last hour, they hatch two secret plans that put them on a collision course with disaster that only a Christ-
mas Eve miracle will solve. The show will run through Thursday, Dec. 31, 2026. Tickets for all four 2026 shows are currently available. For reservations, call 717-768-1568 or visit www.Bird-in-Hand.com.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has announced that revisions to its “Open Your Eyes to Litter in a Watershed” book is complete. It is part of the Open Your Eyes to Litter series of five educational activity books, which the organization is updating in partnership with illustrator and concept artist Brady Mock and the Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation (EPCAMR). The updates are being made to account for the changing environment, new
environmental education standards, and new types of litter. The original series was created more than 20 years ago, and more than one million copies were distributed to schools throughout Pennsylvania.
“Open Your Eyes to Litter in a Watershed” is designed for kids in grades two through four. The book focuses on how illegal dumping and littering affect watersheds. The book includes vocabulary, activities, journal prompts, and activities that reinforce the
concept of a watershed and how litter impacts the people and animals who live there.
Pennsylvania’s firstever Litter Action Plan, announced by the Governor’s Office in 2021, called for education and outreach strategies to ensure that all Pennsylvanians know littering is unacceptable and that there are better ways to manage their waste. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Open Your Eyes to Litter book series aligns with these aims.
The Open Your Eyes to Litter series provide hands-on learning and is appropriate for children in kindergarten through grade six; each book is tailored to specific grades within this range. Each book revision addresses Pennsylvania Department of Education academic standards and has an accompanying teacher’s guide that provides multi-disciplined
educational activities that expand on the information, ideas, and activities that are included in each book.
“Open Your Eyes to Litter,” which has been revised, explains what litter is and whom it affects. The book is available in English or in Spanish.
“Open Your Eyes to Litter: Our Littered Past” illustrates litter and waste issues from prehistoric times to the present and explains how each culture managed or did not manage its waste. The book is available in English or Spanish.
“Open Your Eyes to Litter: Think Before You Toss” explains ways trash can be properly disposed of, what happens to trash once it is thrown away, and why people should reduce, reuse and recycle.
“Open Your Eyes to Litter in a Watershed” illustrates how litter and illegal dumping affect watersheds and
the animals and people who live, work, and play there. The book is available in English or Spanish
“Open Your Eyes to Litter: Keeping Our Greenways Clean” explains how litter affects greenways and how greenways function. The book illustrates the major greenways in
Pennsylvania and shows how they connect cities and communities, and it encourages awareness and stewardship of greenways. The books and teacher’s guides are available to download free of charge at https://www.keeppa beautiful.org/prevent-it/ education-resources/.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites high school students from across the state to participate in this year’s PennDOT Innovations Challenge, which encourages students to use their problem-solving, creative, and strategic thinking abilities to solve real-world transportation challenges in a competition among their peers. The
Innovations Challenge is open to all students in grades nine through 12, regardless of their school’s learning model. For this year’s challenge, students are asked to develop a concept for the use of artificial intelligence in work zones to dramatically improve safety for work crews and road users. The concept must outline

Williamson explained.
“They have to be washed in special soap. We iron them, and then each one gets packaged individually to be handed out to children. Right now, I have close to 200 to take (to Hershey).”
She noted that children who receive a pillowcase while hospitalized get to take it home with them.
The group also knots comforters for Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a Christian relief organization. The blankets, which consist of material on top, batting in the middle and more fabric on the back, are knotted together by the group members.
Williamson delivers the comforters to the agency’s headquarters in Ephrata.
“Last year, MCC sent out 56,600 comforters all over the world - to refugee
camps, disaster (areas) and some in the United States,” Williamson reported. “We used to pick up the tops in MCC and then knot them.
Now, we are doing everything here. When I cut up pillowcases, there is always leftover (fabric for the comforters), so we reuse everything. We average about three quilts a month.”
Another of the group’s projects is to sew fleece blankets for Project Linus, and members also crochet baby hats.
“We had a lot of fleece given to us and we tie these blankets, and they go to the Linus Project,” Williamson said. “The baby hats go to Women & Babies (Hospital) in Lancaster. This past year, we did almost 300 baby hats.”
She said that members of the community often donate
material, including one gentleman whose wife recently passed away. He donated her sewing machine to the group as well as an abundance of turtle-themed fabric.
Williamson added that she is pleased at how the group has grown. “When we first started, there were only three of us, and part of it was to teach women to sew,” said Williamson, noting the other two founding members were Patty Nafziger and Jane Rudewick. “The first year or two, it was about teaching, and it evolved. Now it is all mission work. It has really grown, and I am thankful to God for the people that come. The camaraderie and friendship is just wonderful.”
Williamson emphasized that Sew Much Love is not limited to members of the church. “We chit-chat and
learn about each other. It’s nice getting different people from the community (to participate),” she said, noting about 10 to 12 people attend monthly. “We have plenty of room for more.”

Sarah Zeitler wants to get people talking about some of life’s most basic necessities while making sure everyone has access to them.
The Lancaster woman is the local face of I Support the Girls, a national nonprofit that collects bras, underwear and feminine hygiene products for girls and women in need. What began for Zeitler as a simple search for a place to donate gently used bras has grown into a mission she calls both energizing and deeply personal.
“I’m very focused on changing the conversation,” says Zeitler, who has two teenage daughters, ages 14 and 16. “Why don’t we talk about pads and tampons? ... I tell my girls, ‘You don’t

have to be embarrassed by this topic.’ I want to help people who don’t have access to products most of us take for granted.”
Zeitler discovered I Support the Girls in late 2024. When she realized Lancaster no longer had an active chapter, she quickly stepped up. The hyperlocal aspect drew her in.
“I like that the bras you’re giving are not going to women in another state,” she said. “They’re going right back to local women. I also wanted to be sure these bras were going to women in need who were going to use them.”
I Support the Girls began 10 years ago when founder Dana Marlowe started the organization in the Washington, D.C., area. From one donated bra, the organization has grown to more than 40 million products donated over the past decade.
Locally, Zeitler collects donations and works with partners including Second Grace, which supports young single mothers, and River’s Place, a free clothing closet at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim Township. She has also begun reaching out to local doctor’s offices, especially plastic surgeons, to encourage women undergoing breast surgery to donate their gently used bras.
At her job as a product manager at Armstrong, she regularly collects donations. And thanks to I Support the Girls
national partnerships with major retailers like Victoria’s Secret, she receives shipments of new bras to distribute.
“I like to make sure there is diversity in what I’m giving away,” she said. “I want to have everything from sports bras to special occasions, from tween sizes to larger sizes.”
Her work has become a family effort. Her daughters, August and Citizen, pitch in with everything from social media posts to sorting donations. They’ve also joined her at training sessions offered by the national nonprofit, turning the project into a shared mission of empowerment.
This year, Zeitler received a grant to create a permanent collection site in Lancaster. While she’s still searching for the right location, she continues to collect donations at her home and through temporary community partners.
This fall, for example, a
collection bin will be available at Pocket Books, 903 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, through October.
For Zeitler, the work is about more than just distributing products; it’s about starting conversations that too often remain in the shadows.
“I’m passionate about women’s causes,” she said. “We have very unique needs. Men don’t have to worry about having the right bras to go to work and feel professional or feel confident in their own skin. This is something I’m very passionate about, and doing this work literally energizes me.”
She notes that her involvement in the project has raised her own awareness about community needs.
“Think about victims of domestic violence,” she said. “The police often collect undergarments as evidence, and these women are sent home without underwear. ... Girls literally miss school because they don’t have the proper hygiene products.”
It’s also important to Zeitler that donations stay in the local area.
“Everything that comes into us, whether it’s money, hygiene products or bras, it all goes right to women and girls right here in Lancaster,” she said. “This is really a boots-on-theground organization, and we are helping right where it’s needed.”

will be held at 8:45 a.m., during which toddlers, will crawl along a cushioned race course. “They have to be crawling, not walking,” explained Kirstyn Veneziale, CCCC marketing and event coordinator, noting that all toddlers will receive a CCCC onesie and headband to wear during the race. Prizes will be awarded. She noted that the race will only occur if there are at least five registrants.
The 5K, which will be professionally timed, will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the fun run/walk. “It’s the same
how PennDOT can use smarter systems to prevent accidents and protect people. The concept should also take into consideration cost-benefit information, statewide deployment implications, and public outreach.
Regional Innovations Challenge winners will be selected and invited to present their solutions to the PennDOT secretary and a panel
course as last year,” Veneziale noted. “It is all gravel or paved. It’s never on grass.”
First-, second- and thirdplace medals awarded will be to the top three male and female finishers for each age group and the overall male and female winners of the 5K. Medals and prizes will be awarded at 10:30 a.m.
Youngsters in strollers along with dogs on leashes are welcome to be a part of the fun run/walk, which will not be timed and will cover less than 1 mile. “We will also have a Pup Station, and everyone who registers
their dog will get a bandana for their pet and treats,” said Veneziale, adding, “We will have a Cheer Zone with things to cheer on the runners along the course like cowbells and clappers.”
Breakfast items and race snacks will be provided free of charge. “Before the race, we will have doughnuts, bagels, bananas, yogurt and oranges,” Veneziale noted. “After, there will be chips and soft pretzels.” Coffee and hot chocolate will also be offered.
There will be separate registration fees for the
5K, the fun run/walk and the Diaper Derby. All participants in the 5K and fun run/walk will be given a “I Run for Life” T-shirt.
Veneziale noted that about 300 people took part in last year’s event, which is being held at Hibernia for the fourth time. A representative from CCCC will push an empty stroller with balloons to honor babies who have been lost.
Proceeds from the event will support the agency’s ongoing mission to provide medical, educational and material support to
women and families facing unplanned pregnancies. All services are 100% free. Families are supported physically, emotionally and financially through basic pregnancy care, parenting education, peer counseling, a homeless prevention program and community referrals.
Veneziale added that non-runners and walkers may also attend the event on Nov. 8 with their families. “It’s a family-friendly event,” she said. “We have the Cheer Zone, the snacks and the petting zoo - so
bring the kids, too.” Hibernia County Park is located at 1 Park Road, Coatesville. For more information about the event and to register, visit https:// ccconnectcareinfo.org/ walk-for-life. Those who register prior to Saturday, Oct. 25, will receive a discount. Same-day registrations will also be accepted. More information about CCCC is available by visiting www.ccconnectcare .org or www.facebook .com/ccconnectcare. Those with questions may call 610-383-0930.

Professionals work hard to achieve both short- and long-term goals. Retirement certainly qualifies as a long-term goal, and many people spend decades building and investing in a nest egg that they hope will help them enjoy their golden years to the fullest extent.
The decision regarding when to retire is affected by a host of variables, so a good time for one individual may
not be ideal for another. Professionals on the cusp of retirement can consider several factors as they try to pick the right time to retire. Individuals should familiarize themselves with the rules of Social Security so they can maximize their benefits. Individuals can begin claiming Social Security benefits at age 62, although those benefits will be reduced by 25%. If individuals wait until they

are 66 or, in some cases, 67 to claim Social Security benefits, they will receive their full benefits. The Social Security Administration notes that those who can wait until age 70 to claim benefits will receive as much as 132% of the monthly benefit they would have received at full retirement age. These distinctions are especially important for people who will be looking to government-sponsored programs to provide significant financial support in retirement. Individuals who won’t rely as heavily on such programs may be able to retire earlier.
Seniors should also consider their debts. Carrying debt into retirement can be risky, so it’s ideal to pay off all debts, including a mortgage and car payments, before retiring. Doing so can provide more financial flexibility and make it easier to manage unforeseen expenses, such as those incurred due to health problems.
Seniors must also consider their retirement living expenses. It’s clear that a
sizable nest egg is a necessity for anyone hoping to live comfortably in retirement, but the tricky part is figuring out just how big that nest egg must be. Individuals can speak with a financial adviser and discuss what their retirement living expenses will be. Conventional wisdom based on the Consumer Price Index suggests individuals will need to replace between 70% and 80% of their pre-retirement income after concluding their career. But even that figure is not set in stone, as rising inflation, such as the rapid spike experienced in 2022, can quickly put retirees in financial jeopardy. By estimating the expenses they might have in retirement, individuals can begin to see how close to or far away from retirement they may be. They should budget for inflation so any spike in living expenses can be easier to manage.
Many individuals recognize that there’s no perfect time to retire, but a few simple strategies can help people make the best decision possible.

Groups and individuals are cleaning up shared public spaces through Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Pick Up Pennsylvania program, supporting the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup. The International Coastal Cleanup is an initiative to keep trash from reaching waterways and oceans.
Through Sunday, Nov. 30, while supplies last, volunteers will be provided with free trash bags, gloves, and safety vests when they register a cleanup with Pick Up Pennsylvania. Both waterway and land-based cleanups are eligible for the program since a significant portion of waterway pollution originates on land. Wind and rain wash litter into storm drains or directly into creeks and rivers that eventually flow to the ocean, where it impacts marine life, human health, and coastal economies.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is also sponsoring the Before and After category of the 2025 Pennsylvania Resources Council Gene Capaldi Lens on Litter photo contest. There will be one adult winner and one student winner, and each will receive a cash prize. To qualify, submissions in this category must be from a Pick Up Pennsylvania registered and reported event. To enter the photo contest and view all rules and requirements, visit https:// prc.org/what-we-do/ lens-on-litter-contest/.
Cleanup events must be registered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to receive the supplies, which will be provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, PennDOT, and the Ocean Conservancy. Members of the public may visit www.keeppa beautiful.org to join an existing cleanup event through the Calendar of Events or to register their own cleanup by clicking on Programs and then Pick Up PA.
