Golf Tournament To Benefit Christiana Library The 11th annual Christiana Moores Memorial Library Golf Tournament, presented by the library board and the Friends of the Library, will be held at the Tanglewood Manor Golf Course, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville, on Monday, Sept. 28. A light lunch will be available at noon, followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The cost of the tournament includes green fees, use of a cart, lunch, dinner, snacks and beverages. “While the tournament is in progress, we always have a refreshment cart circulating the course offering snacks and beverages to all the golfers,” said Joan Esworthy, secretary of the Friends of the Library. There will be a number of contests and prizes throughout the day, including closest-to-the-pin, longest drive for men and for ladies

and a putting contest. Prizes will be awarded to first- and second-place teams, plus there will be a cash prize for a hole-in-one, compliments of Hershey Motors. On-course refreshments will be served throughout the day and door prizes will be offered, including gift cards to Walmart and Dutch-Way Farm Market and Restaurant in Gap. “We have a lot of gift certificates for hair salons and eating places,” said Esworthy, adding that one of the prizes will be a television. This year’s goodie bags will feature some additional gifts. “We always give a goodie bag to each golfer. This year, it will contain a mask (made of) material with a golf pattern and a bottle of hand sanitizer,” Esworthy said. “There is always a towel and a sleeve of balls and hard candy to (enjoy) while they (play).” Prior to scheduling this year’s tournament, organizers wanted to

make sure that the event would be safe for all golfers. “We made a trip over to the golf course and talked to the manager,” Esworthy reported. “There were golfers there, and (the golf course staff members) are following all the guidelines that are given to them by the Department of State.” She said that organizers expect a good turnout for this year’s event. “We usually have around 45 golfers and we are already up to 40, and we are happy about that,” noted Esworthy. The upcoming tournament is for amateur golfers only. No prizes will be awarded to professionals. Proceeds will go directly to the funding of the Moores Memorial Library operation. Patrons of the library enjoy free use of computers, books, CDs and many children’s programs, including a weekly story time on Facebook and a Movie Night, which is co-sponsored by the

Iris Gray Dowling of Cochranville recently released a children’s book titled “Toads: Friends You Never Thought You Had.”

“Frogs are mostly commonly found around water. If you don’t have water, you are seeing a toad,” Dowling noted. “(In the book), I drew pictures of the frog and toad and put facts on the page so people could see the difference.” See Local Author pg 3

Local author Iris Gray Dowling of Cochranville has combined her background as a teacher with her love of nature to write a new picture book for children titled “Toads: Friends You Never Thought You Had.” The book’s illustrations, which explain the life cycle of the toad and detail the differences between frogs and toads, were drawn or photographed by Dowling, along with other family members and friends who live in the area. “The two children in the story start out with comparing a frog and a toad because one of the boys wants to take (the animal) he thinks is a frog to a frog race and the other says, ‘It’s not a frog; it’s a toad,’” explained Dowling. “I consider (the book suitable) for kindergarten through elementary school students. It’s definitely suited for older people to talk with their children about.” According to Dowling, frogs have longer legs than toads and smooth or slimy skin. Toads are generally brown and have short legs and bumpy skin.
