A Day of Service

Octorara Student Council Volunteers in the Community

“We wanted to show the kids the enjoyment of helping the community and to build up school spirit,” said Adam Udell, co-adviser of the Octorara Junior-High School Student Council, whose members took part in a Day of Service on May 23.

On that day, students completed yard work and painting at the Atglen Borough building and volunteered at the William J. Brinton House in Christiana, which is currently undergoing renovation by the Christiana Historical Society.

“We also used it as a recruiting tool and asked (other students) to join our Day of Service,” Udell added. “We had five or six kids come with us and try it out and get to see what Student Council is like.”

The Student Council program was recently reinvigorated by Udell, along with co-adviser Jen Watson. “Jen and I took over Student Council last year and found that student participation had been on the decline, (which began) during the pandemic,” Udell said. “We have both been here awhile and have ties to the school. Jen went to Octorara

and is a longtime resident.”

The project in Atglen was approved by Atglen Mayor Darren Hodorovich, who also teaches at Octorara, while the work at the Brinton House was approved by members of the historical society. “Students arranged their own transportation, or parents dropped them off; one student lived close enough to walk,” Udell noted. “We had this planned six or eight weeks in advance.”

Students were told the historical significance of the Brinton House, which is associated with the Christiana Resistance of 1851. The Brinton family was

Cruisin’ in Christiana

Car Show To Benefit Christiana Fire Company

Cruisin’ in Christiana, a car show that will feature vehicles of all makes and models, will be presented by the Christiana Fire Company on Saturday, June 14, on the grounds of the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana. Registration will open at 9 a.m., and the show will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This year marks the third annual Cruisin’ in Christiana. The first event was held in the fall of 2023, but organizers decided to change the car show to spring to take advantage of more favorable weather conditions.

“Last year, we had almost 90 cars,” said fire company member and event organizer Shawnie Betts. “We had cars, trucks and motorcycles.”

Fundraiser To Support Youth Group Mission Trip

In order to raise funds for its mission trip to Alaska this summer, members of the youth group at Pequea Baptist Church will present a fundraiser on Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to noon, which will feature a yard sale, a sale of baked goods and a car wash. The youth group, called SCOPE (Serving Christ on Planet Earth), has dubbed the activity “A Super-Colossal Fundraising Event.”

According to youth group leader Tammy Shondelmyer, the youth group held a bake sale and car wash last year to fund its previous mission trip, but this year a yard sale has been added.

“We have people who donated antiques and furniture items. We have an antique rocking horse,” she stated. “Many items will be tagged. A lot of the smaller items will be by donation only.” Other items for sale will be household goods and children’s items, including baby playards.

Shop for Treasures at Thrifty Kitty Thrift Boutique

Everything from records and books to housewares, paintings and antiques can be found at the Thrifty Kitty Thrift Boutique, a thrift shop operated by Humane Pennsylvania (Humane PA) at 2195 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. All proceeds from sales at the store benefit the animals and programs of Humane PA.

The shop is located in a bright purple building behind Humane PA’s adoption center. The shop is volunteer operated, and it sells goods donated by community members.

“The building has been here since before the Humane League of Lancaster County and the Humane Society of Berks County merged to form Humane PA. It was a veterinary clinic,” explained

Karel Minor, president and CEO of Humane PA.

“The Humane League had moved the vet clinic, and (the building) was just being used for storage or whatever we needed it for.”

Prior to opening the shop, Minor visited similar facilities in Florida.

“There are two very large (stores operated by the) Vero Beach Humane Society, and they have 20,000 square feet between the two stores and they (raise) half of their budget,” he noted. “I checked out their stores and talked to their managers.”

He said that the key to operating a successful thrift store is to sell only donated goods and to operate using only a volunteer staff.

“When we were looking at the economics of having donated stuff and (using) all or mostly volunteer staff, it’s all profit,” he said.

“If you have to buy things and if they don’t sell, you are wasting money. “

Renovations were made to the facility, primarily by volunteers along with some Humane PA staff members who worked during their free time. Shelving was purchased at a discount from a pharmacy that went out of business.

lighting to make it better and drywall. We had a soft opening after Thanksgiving in 2024, and it was actively open after New Year’s,” Minor said. “We had our official grand opening in April.”

There are various rooms in the shop, including a kitchen where glassware, dishes and household goods are located. There is also a room for fine china and an area where records, books and other media are displayed. There are shelves filled with vases donated

by a local florist, and several valuable paintings on display.

“(The building) was already broken up into the rooms; we just opened it up so you could see into them,” Minor noted.

The store is open on Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but more days will be added if volunteers step up. Volunteer duties include cleaning, pricing and sorting incoming donations.

“If people are unable or don’t want volunteer directly with the animals, this is the way they can help the animals,” Minor noted.

“We ask people to do one shift a month which is four hours.”

In addition to volunteers, donations are welcome. Needed items are vintage goods and antiques of all types; books, comic books and magazines; glassware, kitchenware and cookware; records, CDs, tapes and

other recorded media; toys, games and puzzles; and artwork. All items must be clean and in good condition. Items that are not accepted include furniture, mattresses, televisions, electronics and clothing. All baked goods for sale will be homemade, and youths will wash cars for a donation, weather permitting.

For this year’s mission trip, 14 youth group members and four adults will work with the church’s missionaries, Tim and Larissa Zook and Jason and Jonie Mellinger from Helping Hands Alaska (HHA). HHA, founded by Jason and Jonie, provides services to village pastors and missionaries serving in the remote Alaskan bush.

“We are going to support our church missionaries that live and work there,” Shondelmyer explained. “We will be doing work projects, painting, cleaning up a storage facility and helping build a new one.”

Among the many services that HHA provides are arranging charter flights and airport pickups and transporting people and supplies throughout the state via bus, van, truck or airplane. “It is a very remote area,” explained Shondelmyer. “There is a man who flies airplanes and takes food to remote places. He is a jack of all trades. When the lakes freeze, he (travels by truck over) frozen ice roads, which are roads they make upon huge lakes. He takes needed supplies like gas and oil.” More information about the organization is available at www.helping handsalaska.com.

A previous mission trip took the youth group to Nashville. Working with two local churches, they ministered to the homeless, including serving sandwiches. “Every year we go some place; this is new to us. We try to find places that are (in need) in the United States,” Shondelmyer said. “We went to Nashville right after COVID because the

homeless population exponentially grew after (the pandemic). Many could not find their way in the music world. They had huge underground cities of homeless people.”

The youths are asked to raise their own money to participate in the mission trips. “Some teens (recently) mulched to earn some money, and another group of kids helped a church family put river rock around their pool,” she noted. “I see great value in kids in earning their own money because they invest in (the mission trip). They want to go and make a difference.”

SCOPE comprises youths ages 12 to 18. Most reside within the Octorara Area School District, but other members are from Pequea Valley School District and other communities like Coatesville and Downingtown. “We have 42 on the roster, and at least half of those kids are not (from Pequea Baptist Church),” noted Shondelmyer. “They are kids that have been invited because their church does not have a youth group, or they don’t go to church.”

SCOPE meets on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. during the school year. This summer, the youth group will meet on Wednesdays at 6:30 a.m. from June 11 through July 9. “They are meeting this summer on Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. for breakfast and a Bible study before they start their jobs,” she noted. The youth group will resume its regular meetings on Sept. 10.

Pequea Baptist Church is located at 6062 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap. To learn more about church activities, visit www.fbcpequea .org or www.facebook.com /FirstBaptistChurchOf Pequea or call the church office at 717-442-4403.

She noted that there were also some unique vehicles featured. “There was a souped-up Amish buggy, a dragster and a train car, and we had some tractors as well,” said Betts. “The fire company had their engine there until they got a call.”

Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 65 entrants. There will also be trophies in various categories, including Best Classic, Modern, Motorcycle and Exotic.

“One of the volunteer fire company members is making the trophies,” noted Betts. “The Best in Show will be in honor of my (late) dad, Terry Walker.”

Music will be provided by The 45 Guy, who will spin vinyl records. Christiana Fire Company members will offer food for sale, including hot dogs, sausage sandwiches and hot pork sandwiches. Ice cream will be sold by Softie Whirl.

There will also be an opportunity for visitors to win prizes through a random drawing. Prizes will include two North Face tents, including a four-man tent and a two-man tent; four tickets to a Lancaster Stormers baseball game; and gift cards from local restaurants. The prize drawing will be held at 1:30 p.m.

A donation fee will be collected from vehicle owners. Spectators will be admitted free of charge.

Vehicle owners who register in advance by Friday, June 13, will receive a discount. Registration forms are available at the Christiana Borough office, 10 W. Slokom Ave. A link to register is also available at www.facebook .com/christianafirecompany in a post dated May 25. Same-day registrations will also be accepted.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the all-volunteer Christiana Fire Company, located at 214 S. Bridge St., Christiana. The fire company serves the communities of Christiana Borough, Atglen Borough and Sadsbury Township. It also provides support to neighboring companies.

More information about the fire company, including volunteer opportunities, is available at the previously mentioned Facebook page and www.christianafire.com.

In the event of rain, the car show will be held on Saturday, June 21.

Student Council

also involved in the Underground Railroad, and the house was reportedly a stop on that network.

The historical society is currently renovating the structure to use as its headquarters. While the building is not currently open to the public, “Saturday on the Porch” events, which are free and open to the community, are held on the porch on the first Saturday of each month, offering music and refreshments.

On the Day of Service, the students spent most of the day scraping and removing layers of old wallpaper. “They were removing wallpaper and found initials and the date the wallpaper was hung,” Udell noted. “(Society members) are going to do research into the company. They also showed us the cooling cellar and a pit used for natural refrigeration.”

The Student Council at Octorara currently has 24 members in grades nine through 12. Club officers are Liz Murphy, president; Sebastian Hess, vice president; and Bridget Whitfield, treasurer, who will be next year’s Student Council president.

The club plans several major events each year. “We are responsible for helping to coordinate Spirit Week and homecoming and the choice of the homecoming queen and king,” said Udell. “We create signs for Hall of Fame (recipients) and other dignitaries in the homecoming parade.”

The club runs a Family Fun Night around Halloween, which is a series of indoor activities where children can play games and receive candy. “We recruit donations and staff those rooms, and the Student Council runs the haunted house in the library,” noted Udell.

The Student Council’s other major event is the annual Powder Puff flag football game, where the senior girls’ team plays against the junior girls’ team. “The high school football players act as coaches and put plays together,” Udell noted.

This past holiday season, Student Council members volunteered to assemble luminarias for Light Up Christiana, and they hosted a winter dance.

Finally, the Student Council hosts a teacher appreciation lunch in the spring, which is catered by students in the Octorara Culinary Arts program. “We buy eight to 10 gift baskets, like a coffee basket, and we award them to the teachers,” Udell pointed out.

At one time, Udell noted, students were required to apply for Student Council, and elections were held for officers. Today, students only need to demonstrate a willingness to volunteer. “We are hoping to get back to the time where (students) apply and people run elections,” he said. “We want to have kids come and be involved. We are trying to make it exciting again.”

Texting Service Available to Turnpike Travelers

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) has officially launched a new text messaging service, offering customers realtime communication during unexpected traffic backlogs.

The free service is available 24/7 and is designed only for PA Turnpike customers experiencing unexpected backlogs. While at a complete stop in a location where it is safe to remain stationary, through hands-free

devices and voice command or through a passenger in the car, travelers may text “info” to 47676. Users are walked through prompts to verify their backlog location using GPS. Once the information is confirmed, the service provides automated updates every 15 to 20 minutes, including location-specific information about the incident, anticipated clearance times, and roadway updates. Texts stop after an incident clears. To reactivate the

service for a new incident, text 47676 again. This is not used for daily commuter traffic or constructed-related delays.

In June, Paul Miller’s Law will go into effect, prohibiting the use of hand-held mobile devices while driving. Drivers are expected to follow this and all other applicable laws and regulations related to the use of mobile devices in vehicles.

The concept for the text messaging service originated from the PA Turn -

pike’s annual employee innovation challenge, styled after the “Shark Tank” reality competition. The idea was for all customers to be able to text for incident updates when stuck in a backlog.

This service complements existing customer assistance offerings such as *11 and 511. Drivers can also call 911 at any time for life-threatening emergencies; criminal activity; and immediate police, fire, or EMS assistance.
