Secretary Of Agriculture Speaks At Farm Bureau Event By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding was the featured speaker at the Chester Delaware County Farm Bureau’s annual spring banquet on March 14 at Octorara Junior-Senior High School in Atglen. Redding’s remarks stressed the importance of agriculture to the state, noting that it makes up 18 percent of Pennsylvania’s economy at approximately $136 billion annually. He explained that a recent study helped his department expand the state’s definition of agriculture, which includes more components than other states. For Pennsylvania, he explained, agriculture now includes all production agriculture, food processing and forestry, as well as the state’s strong equine industry. “It’s important to recognize all of agriculture is important,” he said.

Redding also made remarks on the Farm Bureau’s Farmers Care Program, which helps with food needs across communities throughout the state. “At the end of the day, there is a human on both ends of what we do. The food system is critical to us every day,” Redding said. Another speaker was Kay Moyer of the Penn State University Extension program. Moyer works with Lyme disease awareness, and her responsibilities include presenting at Amish schools each year in Pennsylvania and beyond. There was also a report on the Farm Bureau’s Young Ag Professionals program by Ellie Chandler. Formerly known as the Young Farmers and Ranchers, the program encourages interaction between new and longtime farmers. Events such as the banquet provide networking opportunities. “The connections you make now may last a lifetime,” she said. See Farm Bureau pg 4

Earning The Eagle Scout Honor: A Family Tradition By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

Eighteen-year-old Colin Delestienne of Atglen recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, just as his father and three older brothers have done. Among those attending the Court of Honor ceremony at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church were Colin’s parents, Doug and Sharon Delestienne, as well as brothers Nathan, 29, Eagle Scout 2008; Cameron, 27, Eagle Scout 2010; and Tyler, 25, Eagle Scout 2012. “You can’t be any prouder,” said Doug. “I earned my Eagle Scout back in 1978. It was fortunate for myself (that) my wife and I had four sons and I got to relive my childhood.” See Eagle Scout pg 3
