Lodge Will Host 111th Groundhog Day Celebration By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Will winter continue for six more weeks, or will Pennsylvania have an early spring? That is the question that noted prognosticator Octorara Orphie will answer at the 111th Groundhog Day celebration on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville, 248 White Rock Road, Quarryville. Following the traditions that have been set for more than a century, the festivities will be held outdoors, beginning at 8:15 a.m. with a ceremonial parade from the covered bridge over the Octorara Creek. The creek will play a role later in the ceremony, as the members of the Baby Class of 2019 will be inducted into the prophetic world of arctomanciferial predictification when one of
them is dunked in the frigid water, among other rituals. Contrary to their name, the “babies” are fully grown men. They include Dain Carson of Columbia, Mark Hadesty of Strasburg, Joseph Paterson of Holtwood, Michael Rutt of Quarryville, and Thomas Waltman of New Providence. “I have been a guest at many lodge functions and have developed some very good friendships, and (I) wish to continue that,” Hadesty remarked. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been intrigued by the lodge sitting atop the hill of the West Branch of the Octorara Creek, the stream in which I spent most of my childhood days and still do,” Rutt added. “I feel it would be an honor to be a member of this brotherhood.” The 111th Groundhog Day celebration at the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge in See Groundhog Day pg 4 Quarryville will kick off on Feb. 2 with a parade beginning at 8:15 a.m.

Offering Families A Flight Plan By Ann Mead Ash
According to Brandon Fisher, lead pastor of Keystone Church in Paradise, parenting is not always easy, and church members would like to offer local parents a little help. “This is a way for us to come alongside parents and (offer them) resources (for) what we think is a really difficult job: to raise kids in 2019,” said Fisher. “It’s a different climate (than in the past).” With that goal in mind, Keystone will hold “Family Flight Plan” featuring guest speaker Jeff Reed on Sunday, Feb. 10. Reed will speak at both morning services, which will be held at 9 and 10:35 a.m., at the Keystone Church Worship Center, 20 Harristown Road, Paradise, and he will hold a special conference session from 6 to 8 p.m. that evening. “We want to be an encouragement to parents and to acknowledge that their job with their (children can be) hard,”
Jeff Reed said Fisher. “We want to let them know they’re not alone in the challenges they’re facing and that we have resources … to both encourage and inspire them with tools and training to direct their kids to know and love See Family Flight Plan pg 4
