In2020, Lisa Kalinowski, founder of CoJoMotion Dance Company of the Lititz Academy of Dance, scheduled “A Season for Wishes” as a virtual performance at Penn Cinema. Last year, the show was back live at Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS). This year, Kalinowski would like to see the LMS Fine Arts Center packed. “It’s just one performance, so I am hoping we can play to a full house,” said Kalinowski.
About 40 dancers will take part in the 18th annual “A Season for Wishes” presentation, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m. at LMS, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Doors will open at 5 p.m. This traditional holiday show benefits Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley.
Along with a variety of musical numbers performed by members of the CoJoMotion Dance Company, the show will feature local singers Cathy Cruz, Tia Wells, Lisa McCoy, Kate Caplan, Amy Fennimore, Rachel Kalinowski, and Michelle McGovern. Prizes, giveaways, and opportunities to donate will be part of the event.
Styles for about 30 numbers will range from tap, jazz, and ballet to modern, lyrical, and musical theater. Rockette-style pieces will include “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Cool Yule,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas

Behind the creativity in presenting the 2022 Journey to Bethlehem event at Woodcrest Retreat, is an enduring goal to keep the tale fresh, while acknowledging its unwavering truth. “It’s the Christmas story,” said Adam Fox, program director at Woodcrest. “It doesn’t change, but there are different ways to think it through.”

Manheim Township Middle School (MTMS) seventh-grade music teacher Rachel Swank and eighth-grade art teacher Lauren Michaud have been teaching together since 2009. A few years ago, they began to work together with the idea of giving students an experience that looks at how art can be inspired by music and music by art.
Last year, the pair invited Philadelphia-based artist Melinda Steffy, known for her process that
turns musical notes into artwork, to visit for a day and speak to students. The event was so successful, the teachers were inspired to write a grant proposal asking Manheim Township Educational Foundation (MTEF) to bring Steffy in regularly to work with all the MTMS students with the goal of creating a lasting mural in the school. The grant was approved, and Steffy began visiting this fall.
Michaud explained that Steffy’s process assigns color to the pitch of a note and size to the length of a note. “So, a quarter note is one

square, and a half note is two squares,” said Michaud. The process will be used to create a mural based on the MTMS song, “Who We Are.” During the first quarter, students learned about her process and began applying it to the school song. “They practiced the process and explored ‘Where should the mural go?’” said Michaud, who added that each student looked at size and shape as well and wrote a proposal. Several proposals were sent to Steffy to combine into a master plan for the artwork. During the third quarter, the painting process will begin. “In the fourth quarter, (the students) will be the ones presenting the creation to our school community through (an event) where work will be on display and appreciated,” said Michaud.
Swank explained that the process is almost like decoding.
“It’s more mathematical, so for the kids who struggle to come up with an abstract piece of art that means something, this is very concrete,” she said. Swank added that the project is collaborative rather than individual. “(They will have to figure out) how to work together and share paints,” she noted, adding that students who are accustomed to working with computers will have some realworld experience. “It’s not just a digital sketchbook where you can erase (an error),” she stated. “It’s a challenge that it will be on concrete, which is something they’re not used to doing. It’s tactile. They are touching it and making it.”
Steffy’s presence at the school also offers lessons in the variety of careers available in the art world. “She is sharing her new work with the kids, and she runs an art consulting business, so she has been able to talk to the kids about the different ways to be involved in the arts,” said Michaud.
Swank added, “We both feel it’s really important for kids to see art and the arts playing out outside of the classroom,” she said. “What does it look like in real life to work in an art or music career but not be a teacher?”

One aim of the event is to make the experience more real for attendees. “Audiences understand what the characters are going through,” said Fox. “That’s what we want to help bring to life.”
Now in its 12th year, Journey to Bethlehem gives participants the opportunity to become part of the Christmas story as they follow Mary and Joseph from the time they receive the news that Mary will give birth to the Christ child to their arrival at the stable where Christ was born and beyond. Journey will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 9 and 16, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 10 and 17, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly and wear appropriate water-resistant shoes on the hourlong trek. Although the event is family-friendly, strollers and those with mobility issues cannot be
Holiday
The 36th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 17. Once again, the holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only; there will be no pickup location.
Families must preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855567-5341 by Friday, Dec. 9. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 17.
The project anticipates distributing approximately 3,000 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-
accommodated because of the rugged landscape.
The live Nativity is interactive in that adults and children who attend may participate in specific scenes. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable along with the shepherds, where they will all meet Joseph and Mary and baby Jesus. “Together they are in awe of how biblical prophecy foretold this event,” explained Fox. The final stop is now a live presentation that takes place in the palace of one of

MCCL Sets Christmas Concert Series
The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) has announced its 2022 Christmas concert series.
Concerts will take place on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. at Historic St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 119 S. Prince St., Lancaster; Sunday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m. at Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster; and Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 1801 Oregon Pike, Lancaster.
Guests will experience the retelling of the birth of Jesus through song and Scripture. Several selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” including a congregational sing-along of the “Hallelujah” chorus, will be interspersed throughout a varied program of familiar
favorites, multicultural songs, and bluegrass-infused selections from Tim Sharp’s Angel Band. Singers will share music in many languages, which they learned and practiced with native Spanish, French, Ukrainian, and S’gaw Karen speakers. Violin, banjo, guitar, bass, and percussion will round out the program.
MCCL’s mission is to train children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. The 110voice choir includes the Carol Choir for children in second through fifth grades, Concert Choir for sixth- through eighth-graders, and Chamber Choir for students in ninth through 12th grades led by artistic director Rosemary Siegrist Blessing with direc-
tors Sarah Wingard and Galen Kauffman. MCCL is a community children’s choir program of Lancaster Mennonite School serving children and youths from Lancaster, Chester, York, and Berks counties.
Tickets are not required, but a freewill offering will be received. More information can be found at www. mennonitechildrenschoir.org, by emailing mccl@lancaster mennonite.org, or by calling 717-455-7025.

Holiday Open House, Gift Drive Planned
The Lancaster City Revitalization and Improvement Zone (CRIZ) Authority has awarded more than $331,000 in grants and loans to support the growth of four city businesses as part of its new $5 million Small Business Financial Assistance Fund.
The program was established to support small business growth and prosperity in the CRIZ district within the city of Lancaster.
In partnership with the EDC Finance Corporation, the grant and loan program was developed to support renovations and the purchase of real estate, new fixtures, furniture and equipment for small businesses. Matching grants of up to $25,000 and low-interest loans of up to $100,000 are available.
Among the recent grant and loan recipients is Babylon Kebab Grill, which received a $17,715 grant and a $48,917 loan for professional design services/development fees, leasehold improvements and equipment to support the development of a new restaurant, Babylon Kebab Grill, within the Place Marie Mall, 52 N. Queen St. (Suite 7A).
Drift Spa Lancaster was awarded a $25,000 grant and a $89,584 loan for leasehold improvements, fixtures, furniture and equipment to support the development of a new health and beauty spa, Drift Spa, to be located within the Lancaster Marriott Hotel at Penn Square, 25 S. Queen St.
Sun & Moon Realty received a $25,000 grant and a $100,000 loan to support the cost of purchasing the real estate at 38 W. Orange St. to enable the relocation and expansion of existing restaurant business Issei Noodle, currently located at 44 N. Queen St.
Champ Realty was awarded a $25,000 grant to support
the cost of purchasing the real estate at 54 W. King St. for Champ Hall Enterprises Inc. (Champ’s Barber School).
The CRIZ program is an economic development program that taps into certain state and local tax dollars generated by businesses in the CRIZ to fund redevelopment and small business growth within the designated zone.
The CRIZ program is intended to help accelerate economic growth in Lancaster city in key areas that align with the city’s economic development strategic plan.
Not all of Lancaster city is within the CRIZ, but portions of the city’s downtown, as well as portions of South Duke Street, West King Street, Manor Street and the area around the Barnstormers’ stadium, fall within the designated zone. The program was developed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to spur economic growth and provide the opportunity to develop vacant or underutilized buildings. The CRIZ program also seeks to help create jobs and encourage entrepreneurs to invest in Lancaster.
Lancaster city has been a part of the CRIZ program since 2013, and previously, money generated from the CRIZ program went to largescale economic development projects like the recent redevelopment of the building now known as 101NQ, 101 N. Queen St., and the adjoining Ewell Plaza. With the goal of providing more equitable access to funding, attracting and retaining small businesses in the city, and enhancing the streetscape, the CRIZ Authority began piloting grants for the CRIZ Small Business Financial Assistance program in 2018.
The pilot program awarded small business grants of up to $25,000 to 14 businesses,

Duke St., Suite 105.
The most recent grants and loans issued this fall mark the end of the pilot program and the beginning of the official Lancaster CRIZ Authority Small Business Financial Assistance program.
Lancaster city is one of three CRIZ programs in the state. The other two are in Bethlehem and Tamaqua. The Lancaster CRIZ Authority and its programs have been under the administration and staff support of Lancaster City Alliance since June 2021. Creative Works To Stage Sock Puppet Show
Creative Works of Lancaster will present “Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera,” a musical sock puppet parody of the movie “Jaws,” on Friday, Dec. 9, at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., with performances at 6, 8 and 10 p.m.
On hiatus since “Sock Puppet Star Wars: The Skywalker Sock-a,” in December 2018, the Creative Works sock puppets will go back in the water 10 years after the premiere of “Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera” in 2012 at the Lancaster Dispensing Company.
“Jaws to the World: A Holiday Sock Opera” will include singing sharks and cardboard boats as five actor-pup-
peteers wield a cast of more than 30 custom-designed, handmade sock puppets. Originally written by playwright and former Creative Works board member Erich Goldstein, the script has been newly updated and refreshed with Erich’s blessing by current board member Alexander Bannon. Musical director Joshua Schwartz from the original production will return to lead the cast’s performances of rock and pop music and Christmas carols.
Creative Works’ pay what you decide (PWYD) ticketing model guarantees that no one will be turned away due to financial limitations. Audience members are asked to
reserve a ticket in advance and pay what they think the experience was worth after the performance.
Tickets can be reserved at www.zoetropolis.com. Those who reserve a ticket will be sent a PWYD link after the performances. Tickets may also be available at the door, but reservations are encouraged.
Creative Works of Lancaster receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Learn more about Creative Works at www.creativelancaster.org.
Holiday Movie Night Planned
The classic holiday film “The Polar Express” will be shown on a large screen among the historic trains during Movie Night in Rolling Stock Hall at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, on Saturday, Dec. 10. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the movie will begin at 6:30 p.m.
In “The Polar Express,” on
Christmas Eve, a steam locomotive passenger train known as the Polar Express stops at the house of a boy who is growing skeptical about the existence of Santa Claus. The conductor says the train is traveling to the North Pole, and the boy, although reluctant at first, climbs aboard.
Each ticket includes a screening of the film, popcorn,
and hot chocolate. Advance tickets are available at www.eventbrite.com. If available, tickets will be sold at the door.
For more information, visit www.rrmuseumpa.org or call 717-687-8628. The proceeds of movie night will benefit the nonprofit Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

Schreiber Pediatric Begins Expansion Project
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development held a ceremonial groundbreaking for a large construction project on Oct. 13 and officially began construction on Nov. 14. The project will include a 14,700-square-foot addition and renovation of Schreiber’s current facility.
Children and adults alike celebrated at the Oct. 13 groundbreaking for the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development’s construction project.
The multimillion-dollar project will allow Schreiber Pediatric to offer a greater range of services to a larger number of
children in the area with special needs and reduce the likelihood that patients will be placed on a waiting list for critical treatment. “We have waitlists that can be up to two years long. If a child has to wait that long to walk or speak, they may not overcome their challenges if their needs aren’t met in a timely manner,” said James DeBord, president of Schreiber Pediatric. “This new space will be a game changer; it will mean that
more children will be able to walk, speak and live out their dreams like any other child.”
New Location –Same Personal Service
Aer many years located at North Pointe on Oregon Pike, Drevna-Hudson Physical Therapy relocated to 700 Eden Road, Lancaster, where they con nue to offer the customized pa ent treatment they have come to be known for.
To introduce their new home to area residents, Drevna-Hudson will hold an open house on Friday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During the open house, tours of the new facility will be offered, along with free coffee and doughnuts, goodie bags, informa on on classes, personal training, and door prizes.
Owners Tim Drevna and Chris Hudson noted that brief informa on sessions will be held on topics such as osteoporosis, general fitness, restora on of mobility, and musculoskeletal problems. Sessions on care of the spine will be included. “How do you get rid of back ache or neck ache?” said Hudson. “If you work in an office, what is the best way to sit? What kind of chair support do you need?”
Classes will include exercise for the senior hunter, safe exercises for those with osteoporosis, and stretching and mobiliza on. Free physical therapy screenings are available but must be scheduled ahead by calling 717-569-4184.
Drevna-Hudson puts an emphasis on personaliza on and developing a rela onship with their 12-member therapy team. “All of our clinicians have exper se in different special es,” said Drevna, who pointed out that pa ents consistently work with the same therapist and therapy team to build rela onship and rapport and create a comfortable environment for pa ents.
Among the pa ent services Drevna-Hudson offers are balance, coordina on, strength training, and flexibility training. “We provide endurance training, condi oning, general flexibility, and manual therapy,” said Hudson. Orthopedic physical therapy, post-opera ve rehabilita on, foot
and ankle ortho cs, and neurologic physical therapy are just the beginning of the many services offered by Drevna-Hudson. The organiza on also has an osteoporosis team and offers sports rehabilita on protocols for athletes who come in here a er injuries or surgery.
O en as a pa ent completes a course of therapy, he or she wants to con nue to exercise in a safe and trusted atmosphere.
Drevna-Hudson offers personal fitness instruc on for individuals, couples, and small groups. The natural progression to a customized exercise rou ne following rehabilita on means a pa ent works out with the confidence that he or she is in good hands.
“We understand goals, objec ves, and the func onal status (pa ents) want to have,” said Hudson. “(Our treatment) is really customized, individual, and it’s really specific.” Now, the staff of Drevna-Hudson is looking forward to showing their new neighbors that personalized service during their open house.
More informa on about the organiza on’s services may be found at www.drevnapt.com.
The project is estimated to take 15 to 16 months to complete and will wrap up in early 2024. The addition will be completed in the project’s first phase, followed by the building renovations in the second phase. The key benefits to the larger space include allowing Schreiber Pediatric to treat 500 more children a year and the ability to hire over a dozen new therapists to meet the increasing demand. The addition will include a new department for physical therapy, and the current physical therapy department will be converted into a facility for traumatic brain injury treatment. Upgrades will also be made to the occupational therapy department.
DeBord said the largest obstacle in the last 10 years is keeping Schreiber Pediatric financially independent and stable. “Most organizations don’t touch behavioral therapy because it loses money,” said DeBord said. Most therapy services are reimbursed through health care programs like Medicaid, meaning there is little profit in the field. Nevertheless, DeBord and Schreiber Pediatric
The expansion project will allow Schreiber Pediatric to offer a greater range of services to a larger number of children with special needs.
have remained committed to making behavioral therapy services available to the community. The organization began changing the way funds were raised and initiating more philanthropic efforts, as well as bringing in more therapy staff to reduce waitlists. After running out of room to host all of its patients and staff, Schreiber Pediatric began drawing up the plan for the expansion project.
Although Schreiber Pediatric has been able to raise a portion of the necessary funds, it still requires money to cover its regular yearly expenses on top of the project expenses. “No one else is doing what we do, and we’re committed to making sure we can do it. This project will allow us to,” said DeBord. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.schreiberpediatric.org.
