According to Paul McGahren, one of the organizers of the Manheim Township High School (MTHS) cross-country teams Ugly Sweater 5K, 298 runners took part in the 2021 race. “We expect 300-plus this year,” said McGahren. “The participant total has tripled since 2018 due to the family fun of the event.”

Family fun is a hallmark of the annual run, which involves a 5K race on a mostly grass cross-country course decorated for the holidays, along with an ugly Christmas sweater competition, soup and hot chocolate, and a chance to bless a local organization by donating canned goods.

This year’s annual Ugly Sweater 5K will be held at Landis Run Intermediate School, 25 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster, on Saturday, Dec. 3, starting at 10 a.m. Those wishing to take part are encouraged to sign up at https://my.raceresult.com/216696/ registration by midnight on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Registration on the day

of the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Landis Run Intermediate School cafeteria.

Ugly Christmas sweaters, for which the run is named, will be judged at the event by a committee of members who act like secret shoppers in selecting the winners. Gift cards and other prizes will be given to those wearing the sweaters the committee members choose.

The course, which will start near Landis Run, has been called a “true cross-country course.” “It’s a great running trail,” said McGahren.

“Mike Phillips, assistant coach of the Manheim Township Middle School (MTMS) cross-country team, does a great job of making sure the course is in good shape prior to the run.” McGahren added that team members have taken it upon themselves to make the route festive.

“The kids go out ahead of time, and they put up lights, ornaments, and tinsel,” he said.

The cross-country team will again help a nonprofit organization as part of the 5K. This year, Power

Packs Project will be the recipient. A collection box will be available at the race for those who would like to donate unexpired canned goods.

McGahren noted that the event contributes significantly to the

MTHS Cross-Country Booster Club’s annual budget. Previously, the run helped raise money to purchase a timing system, which has been used for team events. Now, the revenue is designated to help

subsidize events, equipment, and clothing not covered by the school budget. “The funds also provide financial assistance for anyone needing a hand with sneakers, cleats, uniforms, or other essential

The show’s artistic director, Viktor Yeliohin, is assisted by Alexandra Bube, a senior at Manheim Township High School. She is one of two dancers playing the part of Clara in the shows, and she choreographed a

large portion of Act II.

may be unsure or nervous, to when the parents pick them up,” she said, noting when the children prepare to go home, they are often laughing and hugging their assigned cop. “In those couple hours, the bond that is made between the officer and the child is amazing,” said Osborne.

The third Shop With a Cop will be held at Lafayette Fire Company on Saturday, Dec. 3. Osborne hopes to pair at least 30 children in the countywide program with volunteer state police troopers, officers from East Lampeter Township Police Department, and officers from the SPCA and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Osborne is specifically looking to include children who have been the victim of a crime or involved in another unfortunate circumstance where police contact would benefit them. Those who wish to nominate a child for the program may visit http://campcadetoflancastercounty.com/shop-with-a-cop. Links to sponsor a child are located on that website as well. Nomination forms for children to participate must be completed by Wednesday, Nov. 30.

The elementary-age children and officers whom Osborne has paired up will travel together to Kohl’s on Lincoln Highway to shop. Each child will receive a $150 gift card to Kohl’s, so students may shop for family members. Prepared with lists of possible gifts, the students and officers will shop and then returned to the station, where the officers will help wrap the gifts. Each student will also receive a bag lunch before being picked up.

Osborne has also created a “Troop J Lancaster Shop With a Cop”

Facebook page, where she posts photos, updates, and other information about the event. “I receive a lot of feedback from parents and grandparents in the form of emails or Facebook messages,” she said, noting most of the correspondence expresses gratitude and shares that a child loved being part of the program. “It makes the kids feel empowered to provide gifts for their family members,” said Osborne. “You think it’s just for the children, but it benefits the whole family.”

equipment,” said McGahren. Some runners have told organizers that they view the run as signaling the start of the holiday season. “The post-race soup and hot chocolate, the decorated trails, the chance to proudly wear ugly sweaters and crazy outfits, and the various awards and prizes have made the whole event both light-hearted yet competitive,” said McGahren. “Some folks have said it’s a great way to get everyone up and out in a holiday mood - and after the

race they go shopping for a tree or (presents).”

During the fall season, the MTMS team has included more than 75 runners, and the MTHS team had 60 runners. Members of both MTMS girls’ and boys’ teams took first place at the Iron Bridge Invitational in October. The MTHS girls won the Lancaster-Lebanon League and District 3 championships. Both the boys and girls MTHS teams took part in Pennsylvania state meets in Hershey.

a dozen cheerleaders enjoyed the last game of the season. The league was created earlier this year for participants ages 21 to 40 with varying abilities and disabilities. The Cowboys in blue and the Eagles in green lined up for play after play.

When the Eagles scored, a volunteer played “Fly Eagles Fly” and members of the Eagles team began to sing. Cowboys coach Randy Samuels quickly approached a reporter on the sidelines, saying, “You need to put this in this article, so everyone reads it. This song they are playing now is officially banned from this league.” Laughter ensued, and Rita Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, which is the parent organization of the league, said, “Randy is brutal. He is in everyone’s face. He is just so much fun, and everyone gives it right back to him.”

As Paskoff finished talking, Eagles team member JJ intercepted a football and ran the length of the gym for a touchdown. Cheers erupted. “That was great,” Paskoff told JJ. “Good for you!”

Following the final game, a banquet was held at the church. Awards, trophies, and medals were given out, and participants, parents, coaches and volunteers, including Randy’s wife, Doris, and Chuck and Bev Magee, parents of Chuckie, for whom the league is named, enjoyed pizza from Jersey Mike’s Subs and Rita’s Italian Ice. “The church has been wonderful - so supportive and helpful,” said Paskoff, who added that sponsors who have contributed to expenses include Costanzo Wealth Management, 4 Cole’s KIDS, Bomberger’s, Executive Printing, and Lanco Federal Credit Union.

The league has been so successful, the group is talking about organizing a similar program around a different sport during the winter season from January to March, which will be followed in April by Challenge Baseball. “These (participants) are older than 21, so this was a nice way to segue into serving an older group, which is where we want to go,” explained Paskoff.

Aaron’s Acres will be taking part in the ExtraGive 2022 online fundraising event to be held on Friday, Nov. 18.

On that day, representatives of the organization will visit several county locations, including Grand Central Bagel from 7 to 10 a.m., Jersey Mike’s Subs at the Belmont Shoppes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Dale High Leadership Center from 3 to 6 p.m., and Tel-

New Location –Same Personal Service

Aer many years located at North Pointe on Oregon Pike, Drevna-Hudson Physical Therapy relocated to 700 Eden Road, Lancaster, where they con nue to offer the customized pa ent treatment they have come to be known for.

To introduce their new home to area residents, Drevna-Hudson will hold an open house on Friday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During the open house, tours of the new facility will be offered, along with free coffee and doughnuts, goodie bags, informa on on classes, personal training, and door prizes.

Owners Tim Drevna and Chris Hudson noted that brief informa on sessions will be held on topics such as osteoporosis, general fitness, restora on of mobility, and musculoskeletal problems. Sessions on care of the spine will be included. “How do you get rid of back ache or neck ache?” said Hudson. “If you work in an office, what is the best way to sit? What kind of chair support do you need?”

Classes will include exercise for the senior hunter, safe exercises for those with osteoporosis, and stretching and mobiliza on. Free physical therapy screenings are available but must be scheduled ahead by calling 717-569-4184.

Drevna-Hudson puts an emphasis on personaliza on and developing a rela onship with their 12-member therapy team. “All of our clinicians have exper se in different special es,” said Drevna, who pointed out that pa ents consistently work with the same therapist and therapy team to build rela onship and rapport and create a comfortable environment for pa ents.

Among the pa ent services Drevna-Hudson offers are balance, coordina on, strength training, and flexibility training. “We provide endurance training, condi oning, general flexibility, and manual therapy,” said Hudson. Orthopedic physical therapy, post-opera ve rehabilita on, foot

and ankle ortho cs, and neurologic physical therapy are just the beginning of the many services offered by Drevna-Hudson. The organiza on also has an osteoporosis team and offers sports rehabilita on protocols for athletes who come in here a er injuries or surgery.

O en as a pa ent completes a course of therapy, he or she wants to con nue to exercise in a safe and trusted atmosphere.

Drevna-Hudson offers personal fitness instruc on for individuals, couples, and small groups. The natural progression to a customized exercise rou ne following rehabilita on means a pa ent works out with the confidence that he or she is in good hands.

“We understand goals, objec ves, and the func onal status (pa ents) want to have,” said Hudson. “(Our treatment) is really customized, individual, and it’s really specific.” Now, the staff of Drevna-Hudson is looking forward to showing their new neighbors that personalized service during their open house.
