MattStopa, director of Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department, recalls the first year that the Manheim Township Halloween Carnival was held. “At first, only a couple hundred (people attended),” he noted. “Last year, we had about 1,200 (people).”
The sixth annual Halloween Carnival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Carriage House at Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Activities will include carnival games, photo opportunities, a costume parade, and the distribution of more than 150 pounds of candy.
According to Stopa, this year’s carnival will feature more games, including a pirate hook ring toss, a prize wheel, pumpkin Plinko, glow bowling, a bottle ring toss, and a duck game where the player has to match two numbers. New this year will be a goblet game that will involve getting a ball into a winning hole.
A Trunk or Treat portion of the event will be hosted by the Manheim Township Police, and other township departments will take part, including the fire and public works departments. Stopa noted that the Recreation and Park Planning trunk theme will be the “Wizard of Oz.” Entertainers will include two balloon animal twisters and a stilt walker who juggles.
According to Michael Kurland, youth sports and activities manager, those who are brave may want to check out the haunted hallway.
“We will have five stalls that will have various themes,” said Kurland, who listed spiders, pirates, a graveyard scene, and a witch’s lair among the frightening themes down the hall.
Kurland also discussed a costume parade that will begin at the tennis courts at 1:30 p.m. Prizes in the form of gift cards will be awarded to contestants in three age groups, along with a prize for a costumed group.

BY ANN MEAD ASH“One of my favorite sayings is ‘Bloom where you are planted,’” said Julie Henning, author of “A Rose in a Ditch,” published in 2019, which tells her story of learning to bloom wherever she found herself. “We cannot always change our circumstances, but we can change our responses to those circumstances to be the people God wants us to be,” said Henning.
Henning will share her story, which begins in Korea and takes her to America as the adopted daughter
of Pearl S. Buck, author of “The Good Earth,” on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club luncheon at noon at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. Advance reservations are required by Friday, Oct. 28, and there is a cost to attend. To make reservations, call 717-951-0773.
Henning’s life began in South Korea. Her mother had escaped from the north and married a South Korean who was killed in the Korean War. Henning’s mother met her father, who was an American soldier, and later gave birthto Henning.
The Promise Players theater group will present “Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon” for its fall play at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, on Friday to Sunday, Nov. 4 through 6, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 10 through 13. The Thursday and Friday shows will begin at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays will have a 2:30 p.m. matinee and a 7:30 p.m. showing and Sundays will have a 5 p.m. showing.
The play follows the story of a small town 25 years after a bus accident killed the members of the local wrestling team and rattled the community. The majority of the show takes place in the Red Rocket Diner, named after the town’s sports team, where the audience gets
to know the diner’s regulars: the waitresses competing to see who can convince a customer to order the strangest meal, the sheriff who stops in for his daily coffee and the discontented cook, Johnny, who dreams of escaping to the big city. When another tragedy strikes, the town’s residents and the regulars at the diner navigate the loss, and Johnny wrestles with his faith as he ruminates on life and death during his daily task of serving up breakfast.
The Promise Players’ board of directors met in 2019 to research potential shows but had to put its schedule on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Promise Players’ first show since the pandemic was “Smoke on the Mountain,” which was held over the summer at
Rawlinsville Camp Meeting.
“‘Life, Death and Two Strips of Bacon’ is about how faith helps us through difficult circumstances,” said Lanny Millette, the play’s director. “(The Promise Players) felt like there was a good faith message in it, and it still has a light-hearted nature. It’s a message people need to hear.”
The organization’s goal is to stage performances that speak to life issues and illustrate what it means to be a Christian in today’s world.
Actors are cast from across the county, and those who are not placed in acting roles often assist behind the scenes with things such as lighting, stage production and operating the box office.
For each play, the Promise Players has sponsored a different nonprofit and donated any

Even after graduating, Millersville University students play an important role in the school’s community as alumni. The school has over 70,000 alumni, many of whom remain active in the area. “Alumni engagement is instrumental,” said Kristin Schab, director of alumni engagement at Millersville. “They’re the backbone of Millersville, and they serve as a hub for past, present and future students; it’s important for prospective students to see what a Marauder can do with their education.”
As a way to celebrate its alumni, Millersville University launched the Marvelous Marauders program, which allows anyone to nominate an alumnus from the school. Alumni from any graduating year may be nominated through an online form, which must include a professional summary of the nominee, such as a written biography, resume or LinkedIn profile. Up to two letters of sup-
port may be submitted as well, and the deadline for submission is Friday, Feb. 10, 2023. To nominate a graduate, visit www.millersville .edu/alumni/marvelous -marauders/index.php and click on nomination.
The program will recognize 40 Millersville graduates and what they’ve accomplished since completing their education. The number of honored graduates was picked to honor the 40th anniversary of Millersville State College becoming Millersville University of Pennsylvania in 1983.
The school itself was established in 1855 as the Lancaster County Normal School and was the first normal school in Pennsylvania. It was renamed the Millersville State Normal School in 1859 and became a state teachers’ college in 1927. It was renamed once more in 1959 to Millersville State College. Nominees may be those who graduated prior to the school’s officially becoming a university.
A selection committee of 10 voting members (consisting
of eight alumni, one current student and one campus partner) will sift through the nominations and select the alumni to be featured. “We thought this would be a fun program that would not only pay tribute to the university, but also serve as a way to recognize the good work our Marauders are doing,” said Schab. “It’s a chance to see what everyone is up to. Our hope is that some of the winners will be able to provide opportunities and insight for current and prospective students.” The committee will look at anything from career achievements to community service to ways the alumnus has engaged Millersville after graduating.
Once nominations are closed, the selection committee will finalize its choices and announce the winners in the spring or summer of 2023. Schab is currently working with Millersville University’s IT department to create an interactive online gallery that will showcase each of the selected alumni and his or her

“Growing up in Korea as half American and half Asian was a very difficult life in the 1950s and 1960s,” said Henning, who noted that while America is a melting pot, Korea is not. “In Korea, everybody had black hair, and I had yellow hair,” she noted. “I used to come home crying because of the teasing and ridicule.”
Bullying was not Henning’s only problem. For Henning and her mother, life was hard, as they lived in a one-room house with no electricity or running water. “I sold gum and shined shoes on the streets and helped my mom wash clothes by the creek to earn money,” recalled Henning. “We looked for free food - mushrooms, dandelions, snails, grasshoppers.”
In spite of their difficult circumstances, Henning’s mother had hope for her daughter. “She said, ‘Soonyi’which means sweet - ‘work hard in school and go to America one day.’” Henning followed her mother’s advice, and when a social worker from the Pearl S. Buck Foundation came to their town in search of Amerasians, Henning left her mother to live at the Pearl S. Buck Opportunity Center in Sosa, Korea. Hen-
ning was 13 years old. At the center, Henning studied while her friends played and slept. She was rated first of more than 600 students, but then her mother died. Henning returned home to bury her, and with no family to go to, she returned to the Buck Center, where Buck herself noted Henning’s efforts. “When (Buck) came to Korea to visit her foundation, she met with me and asked me through an interpreter, ‘How would you like to come to America to live with me as my daughter?’”
Henning did so, but when she was 19, Buck died. “I felt like everything crumbled, but God did not leave me there,” said Henning, who was adopted by a couple who were had always believed God would send them a child. “God’s hand has been with me every step of the way,” said Henning, who added that at the Nov. 2, event, “I will share about my journey to becoming a Christian.” Henning has spoken at venues in America, Korea, and China, and in September of 2020, she was honored with the Pearl S. Buck International Woman of the Year award. “I felt very humbled by that,” shared Henning.

The Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial, located at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, is temporarily closed to the public for structural repairs. The memorial, which was dedicated in 2001, is known as the largest veterans’ memorial located in any of the national cemeteries. It honors those who died in military service since World War II. Renovations are expected to take until June 2023.
The memorial is made of concrete, granite, and stone. Its structure is generally in good condition but requires repairs and alterations to address areas of damage due to long-term exposure to the elements.
Funded by the state as a public improvement project, the renovations will cost $3.6 million. Specific repairs will include re-anchoring plaques, resetting existing pre-cast concrete, waterproofing walls, replacing flashing and upgrading
drainage.
Community members may pay tribute to veterans while also helping to preserve the memorial by donating to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund. Taxdeductible donations to the fund can be made at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov; information on donating by mail is also available on this site. Donations can be made in honor of, in memory of or on behalf of another person.
One hundred percent of donations go toward the ongoing upkeep of the memorial, such as landscaping, lighting, and fountains as well as needed maintenance for structural and cosmetic components throughout the memorial.

United Zion’s Trinity Art Gallery will showcase Brenda Blank’s exhibit “Noticed Along the Way” through Sunday, Oct. 30. The exhibit may be viewed daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Each detailed work of art focuses on a landscape, object or person that captured Blank’s attention while she was traveling, touring, driving or taking a walk. Blank said her aim is to show the beauty in ordinary things.
Among the works on display are “Old Water Jar” and “Dressing Up Is for the Birds.” The former features a water jar Blank noticed while touring a historic house in St. Augustine, Fla. Blank liked the way the light came through the window of a dim room and fell across the jar. She created her painting using only two neutral colors to capture the moody feel of the scene.
In “Dressing Up Is for the Birds,” Blank transports viewers to the streets of Venice, where she noticed a

Born and raised in Lancaster County, Blank is a self-taught artist. As a child, she took part in the art competitions at the local farmers’ fairs, often taking home a ribbon or two. In high school, she took as many art classes as possible. After a break for mission work, marriage, jobs and mother-
hood, she enrolled in a watercolor class with a local artist, and with mentorship from other local artists, she began a career in art in 2014. After seven years working exclusively in watercolor, she has begun exploring plein air painting and water-soluble oils, as well. She is an award-winning member of the Lancaster County Art Association

He and his grandfather, Dave White of Manheim, spent many hours together planning, constructing, and painting the library. It was installed May 14 with the help of fellow Scouts and will be available for use by residents in the neighborhood. The project related to JD’s longtime enjoyment of reading.
JD plans to continue attending Scouting meetings and to assist with the younger Scouts.
