The world would be a pretty dull place if we were all alike, if we all did the same things and if we all thought the same way.
Lancaster Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (Lancaster AAPI) promotes diversity and celebrates all the things that make us different. But the social group also salutes the things we have in common.
In the process of acceptance, understanding and familiarity are essential early steps.
“That’s what it’s all about, finding people with whom we have things in common,” said Cindy
Lam Guo, president and one of the founding members of Lancaster AAPI. “If you don’t have that sense of belonging, it’s not home. I don’t want my kids to feel like they’re different. That sense of connection

Our society is consistently changing, constantly evolving. Our institutions keep pace by growing right alongside of it.
That’s the role that the Manheim Township Public Library (MTPL) plays in the local community, or at least one of them.
“We are first and foremost a public library and all that goes with it,” said Joyce Sands, who’s been MTPL’s director for eight years. “We’re kind of a de facto community center. We

The American Quilter’s Society (AQS) QuiltWeek show is not your grandmother’s quilt display. It’s a full-on celebration of creativity, color and craftsmanship that will leave even non-quilters in awe.
“People will be blown away by what they see,” shared Michelle Renee Hiatt, director of AQS. “People who don’t quilt may have an image in their mind of what a quilt looks like, but they

After the dinner, the Allegro Chamber Singers will present a concert at 7 p.m. to kick off the church’s 2025-26 Starlight Tea Concert Series.
The concert theme, “Seasons of Life,” will showcase familiar tunes, such as show tunes from “Porgy and Bess,” “Oliver!” and “Wicked,” as well as works by Dan Forrest and David Bennett Thomas and “Lux Aeterna” from Michael John Trotta’s Requiem.
The Allegro Chamber
Singers are directed by Jon Clemens and accompanied by Monica Hochstedler Carlson. The group rehearses and performs in the summer months only, since many of the singers perform with other groups during the rest of the year.
Admission is free, and a freewill offering will be received. Tea and cookies will be served following the concert. For more information, contact planning committee chair Giny Mackey at 717-201-8450.

Protecting children starts at home. Secure your firearms to prevent tragedy.
In Lancaster County, firearms are the leading cause of suicide death among children. Nationally, they are the number one cause of pediatric death. Even when warned, children are naturally curious—and that curiosity can be fatal. Studies show that suicide rates are four times higher in homes with firearms. But there’s something you can do: store firearms safely.
• Always keep firearms in a locked safe or lockbox.
• Ensure they are unloaded and secured.
• Store ammunition separately and securely.
• Use cable locks or gun cases to prevent unauthorized access.

will be surprised by what these quilts look like. Even if you are not a quilter, if you have a love of art and fiber, it’s worth coming to the show to see the talent that’s out there.”
The QuiltWeek show will be held from Wednesday, Sept. 10, through Saturday, Sept. 13, at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 12, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The show will feature workshops, lectures, special events and more.
“There will be classes in color, technique, appliqué, fabric painting,” Hiatt said. “We also offer classes to learn how to quilt on domestic, sitdown longarm and longarm machines. Those are classes you don’t often see.”
Many of the instructors offer kits for sale, and the machines necessary to work on the projects will be on-site, she said.
“This is also an excellent opportunity to learn,” she noted. “If you are thinking about purchasing a sewing machine, this gives you the perfect opportunity to try all these machines and see what’s right for you. There are all levels of classes.
There’s something there for each person.”
National instructors will offer classes, and hundreds of quilts will be on display throughout the show, including just under 400 contest quilts in eight categories as well as almost 300 special exhibit quilts.
“The variety and quality of these quilts is incredible,” Hiatt said. “It’s really inspiring to see all the different types - modern, hand-quilted, machinequilted, applique, piecing. No matter what type of quilter someone perceives themselves to be, they will find quilts similar to their tastes as well as quilts that will push them to start thinking outside the box.”
Instructors will include nationally known quilters Sue Cleveland and Nancy Mahoney, along with a variety of unique exhibits.
“Pay attention to the quilt exhibit by the Two of Us,” Hiatt recommended of the exhibit featuring works by Pat Holly and Sue Nickels. She also highlighted “Beyond Tradition,” which includes abstract quilts on loan from the National Quilt Museum. Another exhibit will spotlight a creativity challenge that began last year when members were invited to create artwork on seven-inch blocks, all
with the theme “My Dream (fill in the blank) Cabana,” resulting in 75 pieces that have been hung together.
“It’s quite striking to see,” she said. “The pieces are small, but the amount of work that went into them is impressive.”
More than 100 vendor booths will be on-site at the show, highlighting local, national and international participants.
AQS was founded in 1984 by Meredith and Bill Schroeder. The current CEO is their grandson.
“Our goal is to make sure quilters receive the recognition they deserve,” Hiatt said. AQS holds four shows a year, including one at its headquarters in Paducah, Ky., and awards thousands of dollars in prizes annually. Other sites are chosen for their impact on the fiber-arts industry and attract people from all over the country.
“Lancaster is one of those shows. It’s a destination show for a lot of people,” Hiatt explained. “We have bus tours that come in from New England just for this show.” While the Paducah show draws upwards of 35,000 visitors, Hiatt noted that Lancast er’s show typically brings in up to 17,000 people.
“Lancaster is our only non-convention-center

show,” Hiatt said, noting that the Nook has proven to be an ideal location. “The lighting is fantastic, and the floor, which is used for sporting events, is easier to stand on than concrete. Many of our attendees and vendors remarked on the comfort of the floor.”
Lancaster’s long tradition of fiber arts also makes it an ideal location for the show, she said.
“We always look for areas that have a high demographic of quilters,” she stated. “We are always looking to move forward with promoting what our founders set out to do: give national recognition to quilters and their work.”
Hiatt recommended registering early for classes as they fill up quickly. Tickets for admission to the show may also be purchased in advance or on-site. For details on QuiltWeek and registration information, visit www.american quilter.com and click on the “Shows and Contests” tab.

have a lot of people coming here to use the library facilities and meet people. I think this library is living proof of the importance of libraries.”
MTPL is celebrating 15 years of serving the 44,000-resident local community, one and a half decades of making ever-emerging Manheim Township a better place to live. Recently, MTPL, which operates as an independent library associated with the Library System of Lancaster County, commemorated its founding with an invitation-only event that included past and present MTPL foundation board members, elected officials and donors.
“Based on circulation numbers, which are a true measure of a library’s services, we are the busiest library in the county, by far,” said Sands. “I’m not sure that was expected when the library was built, but that’s the reality of it. We overflow our parking lot fairly

routinely. That’s our reality. It does place a strain on the building and staff. That’s what we’re dealing with.”
Some say a community is only as good as its public library.
Before the current 20,200-square-foot, neo-agrarian building was constructed at 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, in 2010, MTPL was very much a library without a home. At one time, MTPL served as a direct branch of the Lancaster Public Library, leasing multiple spaces at various sites.
“(The construction of the current building) was a grassroots effort to meet the quality and size of the township,” said Sands. “Like-minded residents got together and launched a capital campaign, and it was done with the support of the Manheim Township Board of Commissioners. It was a large effort involving many, many people. The designers prioritized it being a green facility; the building is eco-

The program will feature Lisa Zug and Kelsey Hockenburger from RB Shap, who will present a shoe fashion parade.

friendly, and the building reflects the surrounding area. If you look at the building, there are different elements that suggest that.”
Today, MTPL is home to 79,980 print and physical items, including books, CDs, DVDs, board games, yard games and interactive learning kits. Library cards, which are free to obtain but require identification documents, are used to check out those items at MTPL and all of the other 15 facilities in the Library System of Lancaster County.
In 2024, MTPL was visited 206,614 times, and physical items were checked out 620,561 times. Also last year, MTPL’s 705 individual or group-led programs, sessions and classes were attended 13,773 times, and its 316 self-directed programs were used 12,596 times.
MTPL, which also features five study rooms, a children’s room and a lobby for reading periodicals, is a popular local place for residents to use
Wi-Fi, do homework and tutor students.
“It’s anybody who’s out there in the public. It’s a cross-section of the community,” said Sands of MTPL’s visitors. “I like to leave my office and see people enjoying the library, just seeing the community being built here.”
MTPL employs eight full-time workers and 20 part-time workers and is supported by a complex network of volunteers. MTPL is funded through revenue from the state, county and Manheim Township, as well as fundraising efforts, multiple book sales, grant applications, facility rentals and monies generated by its passport services.
MTPL is open Mondays to Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Part of us is a social group, but we do advocate for our community,” said Lam Guo, a resident of Manheim Township. “If there’s something we want to advocate for, we show up. But we never push anything on people. Within the Asian community, there are also different people.”
“It’s really a safe space,” she continued. “Our mission is to celebrate, connect, bring us together and let people know we have a voice. We want to educate people and let people know who we are. It’s fun for us to all come together. But at the end of the day, we’re a

Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, will host “A Night With Anthony Robles: Honoring the Legacy of Robert ‘Bob’ Derr” in the Good Shepherd Chapel on Friday, Aug. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m.
NCAA wrestling champion Anthony Robles will speak about his journey and honor longtime wrestling official Bob Derr. Born with only one leg, Robles overcame the odds to win the NCAA’s 125-pound title in 2011, and Bob was the referee who raised Robles’ arm in victory. Bob was known not only for his work as a wrestling coach and referee, but also for leading the Warwick field hockey program to 630 career wins and three state titles. Bob passed away in November 2024.
In addition to Robles’
stories, state Sen. Scott Martin will make a presentation to Kathy Derr honoring Bob’s legacy.
Jessica Shellenberger, who was coached by Derr on Warwick’s field hockey team before playing at the University of Michigan and winning a national championship, and Dale Dietrich, who coached Warwick’s junior high wrestling team with Bob for eight years, will also speak.
To purchase tickets for the event, visit https:// wrestlingandperform ance.org/anthony -robles/. Proceeds will support the Robert “Bob” Derr Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was established to help ensure that Derr’s legacy continues to make a difference in the lives of youths and athletes in his community.

Through steady growth since its founding, Lancaster AAPI’s membership now numbers 300 Lancaster County residents. Many of the members are second- or third-generation citizens who live in Lancaster County communities like the city and Manheim Township.
“In the Asian culture, there are a lot of traditions we value,” said Lam Guo. “We come from immigrant families. Our grandparents worked hard and tried to pave a way for us. We take part of that and try to make a way for future generations. We try to piece two worlds together. I think the biggest difference (between
the two worlds) is that we don’t take a lot of things for granted. Things weren’t given to our grandparents. They came here with nothing. We recognize how hard we have to work for the things we get because we saw how hard they had to work. That’s what binds us.”
It is estimated that the Asian American and Pacific Islander population in Lancaster County currently numbers more than 14,000 residents, or about 2.6% of the locale’s total population.
“On every corner and on every block and at every traffic light across Lancaster County, there is an Asianowned business,” said Lam
Guo. “Some people aren’t as open-minded because it’s unfamiliar. But the Asian American community will continue to drive commerce in the county. There have been so many other contributions made. If you never take the time to learn about it, you’ll never know what’s beautiful about it. If (people) can understand it, there will be more appreciation for it. We need to start developing appreciations for other cultures, and not just the Asian culture.”
Lancaster AAPI was established in 2023.
“COVID was a really tough time for a lot of Asian Americans, and (Lancaster AAPI) was a safe space to
come together,” said Lam Guo. “If we’re all separated, how do people know we have a voice? It has grown so much. Every single time we get together, it feels like there’s new people. When they join Lancaster AAPI, it feels like they’re home again.”
“We are here, and we are building a community,” Lam Guo continued. “We’ve extended our arms to welcome other communities, and we hope everyone will welcome us because this is our home as well. We hope everyone will take the time to see us, hear us and value us.”
