MTHS Prepares To Present “The Theory Of Relativity” Fish Story - Second Blue Skies Fundraiser Scheduled “What’s awesome is that I have been able to create a culture where students talk to directors about their feelings on the material,” said Joanne Weaver, who is directing the Manheim Township High School (MTHS) spring musical, “The Theory of Relativity.” “(The students) have really been able to have a voice in making the show their own.” Weaver added that the show, which is about New York University students and graduates, is relevant to the students’ present lives. “(The show is) about what it’s like growing up, so they understand what it’s about,” she noted. The 2016 musical, which is by Neil Bartram and Brian Hill, looks at how lives are interconnected in the present day. According to Weaver, during the 80-minute show, the cast of 14 will explore a number of themes ranging from rivalry to body positivity to female empowerment to family relationships. “There is lots of comedy,” said Weaver, who added that references to Albert Einstein are woven throughout the
script. “It’s the story of the (characters) coming to realize who they are,” she explained. The show includes several musical numbers, and Weaver warned audiences that there will be a few tearjerkers. Sophie Yost, who plays the character of Mira, will sing “Promise Me This.” “Her song is so heartfelt. It will touch everyone,” said Weaver. Other musical numbers will include “Relativity,” “I’m Allergic to Cats,” “The End of the Line,” and “Great Expectations.” Weaver has observed gratitude in both students and their parents for the opportunity to present the musical. “I have heard students and parents thank us so many times for allowing something like this to happen,” she said, noting that she thinks the cast and crew have become especially close-knit because of the circumstances under which they are producing the show. Protocols do not allow for touching among cast members during rehearsals; however, at one
point during the presentation, two characters will touch, and another character will present them with hand sanitizer as part of her role. Cast members, in addition to Yost, include Kristen Bennet, Evan Castner, Adam Cigan, JD Emig, Erin Gray, Grace Kline, Kennedy Meglic, Caleb Patterson, Nathan Perlis, Abby Piper, Maggie Spealman, Jack Turner, and Olivia Tran-Speros. While students will be live on stage for the performances, the show will be livestreamed and presented for a very limited audience. Interested individuals may purchase a single-device streaming ticket for 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 8; Friday, April 9; or Saturday, April 10. Seats will be assigned to those purchasing a ticket to attend in person. Tickets may be purchased by searching for “Manheim Township High School” at www.showtix4u.com. Tickets may be purchased for a set price, but opportunities to donate more to the program will be presented at purchase.

In the spring of 2020, when many events had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, the first Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament to benefit Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Girls, an outdoor event, was held at the J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation (Camp Mack), 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown. The fundraiser, the brainchild of Cub Scout Case Baccio, was organized to help send veterans, Purple Heart Warriors, and families of fallen heroes to the 2020 Warrior Weekend held in July. “(The tournament) went really well,” said Case, a member of Cub Scout Pack 93, who is now a fourth-grader at Bucher Elementary School. “We were able to raise more than $4,000, and there were quite a few people there.” Buoyed by the success of the 2020 event, Case, along with his mother, Ali Bucher, and friend Eric McCullough, are organizing this year’s event, to be held at Camp Mack on Sunday, May 16, rain or shine. Area residents who enjoy fishing are invited to take part in the event. The adult open and hero tournament, for those age 16 and older, will be held from 7 to 11 a.m.
Adults and children gathered at Camp Mack in Newmanstown for the 2020 Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament to benefit Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Girls.
The adult hero category will include participants who are Purple Heart recipients or Gold Star family members. Lunch will be provided from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The children’s open and hero tournament will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Child hero category members will include children of Purple Heart recipients or members of Gold Star families. This year, only 30 adult and 30 child participants will be registered. The 2020 tournaments attracted 45 participants. Winners were named in categories including biggest fish and largest number of fish caught. Bucher noted that one participant caught a large catfish, but McCullough added that the
largest fish caught that day was a bass. According to Bucher, two goals of this year’s tournament are to attract more veterans and to double the amount that was raised last year. “We want to promote the community getting together for this,” she said. “We’d like to see some new people.” Individuals who are interested in registering for the event may visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “2nd Annual Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament benefiting BS3G.” Readers who have questions may call 717-2245923 or 910-964-8594.
