A Focus On Creativity: Cavod Plans Gala And Auction
Connie Dienner, founder of Cavod Academy of the Arts in New Holland, has spent the last 20 years establishing a godly environment where students can create with purpose. Her purpose for the virtual 2021 fundraising gala she is currently planning is to show that to the Lancaster community. “(This gala is) for people to really be able to see that Cavod is not just about dance and theater,” said Dienner. “This is a community where people come and support one another and see their kids grow.” In her current role as executive director, Dienner witnesses that growth. “We see (students) come out of their shell and learn disciplines,” she said.
Cavod will hold its virtual gala on Thursday, May 6. The preshow will begin at 7:15 p.m., and the show, which will be hosted by Vinnie DePaul and auctioneer David Keller, will be streamed from Rock Lititz at 7:30 p.m. Dienner noted that the event will feature a variety of entertainment, including live and prerecorded singing and dancing performances, spoken word poetry, and a visit from the Cavod Ensemble.
Among the many entertaining presentations, Dienner was especially excited about a segment where DePaul will question young Cavod students in a feature reminiscent of Art Linkletter. “We are filming Vinnie asking children from Cavod what they like about Cavod,” said Dienner.
Keller will auction several experience packages during the event, and viewers will be able to bid online or by smartphone. While Dienner noted that most of the items will be surprises, she shared that Darla’s Hair Care and Spa in Intercourse has donated a day in the salon that will include pedicures, manicures, and massages.
A silent auction will open online at https://cavod.org on Monday, May 3, and remain open through Sunday, May 9. Dienner said that organizers have set a goal of offering 50 items, among which will be a handmade quilt, an Escape Room Lancaster gift card, tickets to Dutch Wonderland, an overnight stay at the Cartoon Network Hotel, and gift certificates to local restaurants.
Another goal the organization has set for the gala is to have 50 watch parties happening around the county during the event. To encourage watch parties, organizers have set up a special delivery for those who contact Cavod for their complimentary access. “(Watch party hosts) will have a charcuterie board, a bottle of wine, and flowers delivered to their home by a Cavod student in a costume,” shared Dienner. “We will drop everything you need at your door so you can sit with your family and watch or have it on your deck with your friends.” The link to the event will be available through the Cavod website and by searching for “Cavod Academy of the Arts” on Facebook. Dienner encouraged those who wish to hold watch parties to email connie@cavod.org or call 717-989-3436.
Cavod Academy of the Arts students will be the focus of the organization’s 2021 virtual gala on May 6.

YWCA frompg 2 Society of South Central Pennsylvania to identify six key sites of historical significance to African Americans in Lancaster. Our professional race coordinator used these points to map and measure a new 5K course.”
Information will be recorded about the sites and will be interspersed with music to create a Spotify playlist. “The playlist was culled from suggestions of our Social Justice Training Team, and you will find some moving, motivating and inspiring music on this mix,” she remarked. “We are excited about the new course, which still starts and ends at Musser Park, just around the corner from YWCA Lancaster.”
A Kids Fun Run is also part of the event this year, and children age 12 and under are encouraged to participate in a 100-yard dash virtually. “This year we have a special gift for youth participants,” Blake said. “Zetta Elliott, an award-winning author recently published a children’s book set in Lancaster, ‘Roots Run Deep.’ It is illustrated by a Lancaster artist, Gracie Berry.” Every child who signs up will receive the book, which tells the story of the resilience and determination of Africans as they resist enslavement and fight for their rightful place as citizens of the United States.
Blake encourages anyone to sign up for the race, adding, “In addition to supporting our work, by participating in the race you will learn more about your community, get outside - unless you run your way on your treadmill - and learn more about the issues impacting Lancaster today.”
