Manheim Township

No gloom, all glee: MTHS students will be “Singin’ in the Rain”

At Manheim Township High School (MTHS), the word is out. Students have discovered that drama, theater and the performing arts are fun, rewarding and social, and they want to be a part of that scene.

The contingent of nearly 140 students involved with MTHS’ upcoming spring musical represents one of the largest in recent memories.

“I’m hoping people will leave the show with refreshed attitudes.”

“The more the merrier, for sure,” said director Samantha Haldeman. “I’d love to put more kids on stage. We really encourage the kids to use this as teachable moments. There are a lot of things to be done. It’s fun to do an old traditional show like this.”

The Manheim Township Performing Arts (MTPA) department will present its rendition of “Singin’ in the Rain” on Thursday, March 27, at 7 p.m.; Friday, March 28, at 7 p.m.; and Saturday, March 29, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the MTHS auditorium, 115 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster. Tickets for the performances are available at https://cur8 .com/40306/pro ject/129716; by calling 717-5603097, ext. 3311; or at the door the days of the shows.

The show takes about two and a half hours to perform and will include an intermission.

“I want to put on shows that haven’t been seen on the Manheim Township stage before,” said Haldeman. “I felt it was time

to do a classic that takes us back to 1927 and the Golden Age of Hollywood talkies. There’s an element of making it rain, which is no small feat. Tap (dancing) is a skill we’ve been working on. It’s kind of a specialty area, so (the actors and actresses) have been working really, really hard on their tap dancing. With the costumes, there’s a massive amount

of quick changes, which is also a huge challenge.”

Involved with the spring musical are 46 cast members; 64 stage crew, sound crew and makeup crew members; and 26 pit orchestra musicians. The cast features senior Finneghan Forrester as Kathy Selden, junior Timothy Cruz as Don Lockwood, freshman Abram Wolfe as Cosmo

Brown, junior Cecelia Gareis as Lina Lamont, senior Terrell Russell as R. F. Simpson and junior R.J. Scacalossi as Roscoe Dexter.

“They’re all very special to me,” said Haldeman. “MTPA is a very special community in our school. One of the things that makes theater so important in our school is that there’s a place for everyone. It’s a really special

Alcoholism is a medical condition that, if left unaddressed, can wreak havoc and ruin lives.

The first step in treatment involves recognizing and acknowledging a problem exists. Lancaster County Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) treats the condition through empathy, communication and human support.

“Figures suggest that onethird of the (country’s) population has a drinking problem,” said Rick S., a central service office volunteer for Lancaster County A.A. “For me, an alcoholic is someone who is drinking against their own will. There’s something in their mind and body that’s making them drink. They’re literally from all walks of life.”

“I’ve been very good friends

It’s really all about providing opportunities for girls and young women. The Lancaster Inferno motivates females to take advantage of opportunities and to make the most of them.

For the Inferno, soccer is more than a game; it’s a transformational tool.

“Our goal is to empower these girls and women and use soccer as a platform for the development and growth,” said

Stephanie Cleaves, executive director of the Lancaster Inferno and the head coach of the club’s first team. “Eighty percent of female CEOs played sports.

It’s our goal to develop not just the athletes but the individuals as future leaders and to build confidence. Having female role models is very important to that.”

Club (F.C.) is a one-of-akind academy that promotes female soccer and its benefits. The program revolves around a series of competitive and instructional age-group teams, each more advanced than its predecessor.

There are financial fees associated with each level of the Lancaster Inferno academy.

“When it was initially launched, we wanted to provide a place for high-level talent to play,” said Cleaves. “That evolved into wanting to have a feeder system for the top teams. We felt like there was a need to create a club that was all girls, making female athletes the top pursuit. Girls drop out of athletics at age 14 at twice the rate of boys. We’re trying to buck that trend.”

About 245 female athletes from all over Lancaster and Lebanon counties, ages 9 to 36, populate the Lancaster Inferno academy’s 12 teams - two highly competitive pre-professional teams and 10 youth teams. Some of the older players are former college and local high school stars, some are current high school players, some play soccer with other teams during other seasons and some are relative newcomers just starting to appreciate the game.

The Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth teams practice at Spooky Nook Sports Complex and play some of their games at the Manheim Township Athletic Complex. Cleaves’ first team, which is made up of the program’s most advanced and

competitive players, will be playing five home games at Penn Medicine Park, the Lancaster Stormers’ home stadium, during the 2025 season after calling Warwick High School home last year.

“They are serious players who want to take their games to the next level,” said Cleaves of the first team members. “They’re also players who want to be keep playing at a high level. It’s usually players who see themselves playing professionally; that’s who’s on our first team. We kind of fill that gap between college and pros.”

Many of the Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth programs are year-round ventures with games contested during the spring and fall seasons. The Lancaster Inferno first team plays a 10-game regular season schedule in the pre-professional United Soccer League (USL) W League from May to July.

“We’re really big on professionalism, just how we run things. We take pride in how we run it,” said Cleaves. “We’re a team for the community. When I tell that to players, it excites them. (The older players) want to be role models. It’s our goal not only to attract the best players, but also to develop them.”

Cleaves and her family purchased the franchise that would become the Lancaster Inferno in 2014. Six years later, the Lancaster Inferno founded an under23 women’s premier team, and in 2022, the Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth program was launched.

“My favorite part is seeing the young players interact with the senior team players,” said Cleaves, a resident of Lititz. “They look starstruck, like, ‘That could be me some day.’ It really impacts you.”

“Seeing that there’s exciting opportunities is huge,” continued Cleaves. “(Players are) learning from experienced coaches. Some could go on to be professional players or coaches or referees. It’s about developing them as confident individuals in life. It teaches them life lessons and about the spirit of soccer. We want to make it an option if they want to play at a higher level.”

Jazz ensemble to perform at church

Temple Avenue will perform on Sunday, March 23, at 4 p.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster.

Temple Avenue is a Lancaster-based jazz ensemble of young professional musicians, most of whom have earned bachelor’s and advanced degrees in jazz. Several of these degrees were received from Temple University, inspiring the group’s name. Temple Avenue’s music includes vocals, bass, saxophone, piano, and drums. In

high demand for events throughout central Pennsylvania, Temple Avenue musicians are known for their unique spin on jazz standards and lesser-known tunes. There is no admission charge; a freewill offering will be received during intermission to support St. Peter’s Musical Arts Series. For more information about the Musical Arts Series and other ministries of St. Peter’s, visit www.stpeterslutheran.org or call 717-569-9211.

Singers invited to participate in event

The Musical Arts Concert Series of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, will host the St. Peter’s Choir Festival at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, to benefit the Manheim Township Ambulance Association.

Community members are invited to join the chorus. Singers will have the opportunity to perform a variety of choral music, sharing the program with professional musicians.

Singers of all ages, from high school through senior adults, are welcome to participate. No auditions or prior knowledge of the music are required, but singers should be able to read music. In addition to the adult chorus, children interested in participating will be able to join the children’s choir for this event.

Rehearsals for the adult chorus will be held at St. Peter’s from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays, April

24, May 1, May 8, and May 15. Rehearsals for the children’s choir will begin at 4:15 p.m. on the same dates. All singers must be available for a dress rehearsal on Saturday, May 17, and for the performance on May 18. The freewill offering at last year’s choir festival raised $5,000 for the Manheim Township Ambulance Association. To express interest in participating or for more information, contact St. Peter’s director of music, Tom Berdos, at tom.berdos@stpeters lutheran.org. with lawyers and doctors,”

Rick S. continued. “I’ve been very good friends with people who are a step away from living on the streets. Everywhere you run across these people. They’re people who just want to live a better life and be better people. It’s not just willpower to stop drinking; it’s getting along with yourself. That’s what’s kept me sober.”

Headquartered at 313 W. Liberty St., Lancaster, Lancaster County A.A. has a mission that revolves around meetings and bringing people together to address drinking problems in a therapeutic environment.

Lancaster County A.A. offers about 148 hourlong meetings each week all over the city and county. Meetings are held mostly at churches, but also at its unofficial clubhouse, the 521 Club, 2400 Butter Road, Lancaster, and at community centers in areas like Lititz, Neffsville, Ephrata, Millersville, Gap, Elizabethtown, Willow Street and Denver.

Lancaster County A.A. also conducts seven meetings a week at the Lancaster

County Prison and offers Zoom meetings.

The meetings are free to attend, but donations, which go a long way in funding Lancaster County A.A.’s work, are accepted.

“What a lot of newcomers say is, ‘I can’t believe how happy everybody is. What are all these people so happy about?’” said Rick S. “There are people who come in who are really suffering.

But I think it helps to see people who have long-term sobriety. There’s a very light and friendly vibe. When the meeting starts, it can be very serious. There can be tears, tears of joy and tears of sorrow. Ultimately, the vibe is unconditional support. For the most part, there’s nothing more than love and support.”

Lancaster County A.A. offers individuals two kinds of meetings: open meetings for anyone, including spouses, medical professionals and students, and closed meetings for only people who identify as having a drinking problem. The meetings are led by a volunteer - many times people who are recov-

ering alcoholics themselves. On the average, about 20 people attend each Lancaster County A.A. meeting.

“Each meeting has a similar format,” said Rick S. “After an opening or a greeting, we read the Alcoholics Anonymous preamble. Most meetings will have announcements about events and happenings. Typically, we read the 12 steps and the traditions, and we celebrate any A.A. anniversaries. Then it just opens up. If people want to share, they can share, or if not, they can just listen. At the end of the meeting we say, ‘Thanks for being here and thanks for helping each other.’ We tell them, ‘Keep coming back. It works if you work it.’”

Lancaster County A.A., which was established locally in 1947, is operated entirely through the efforts of volunteers. The organization also operates a 24-hour phone help line, 717-394-3238.

“There’s no doubt that there’s a genetic component to (alcoholism), and there can be a traumatic piece to it,” said Rick S., a resident of Lancaster Township. “Many

“Dreams & Fears,” the latest collection of work to come from local artist Sterling Keesey, is now being featured at Mulberry Art Studios. A First Friday opening reception was held on March 7, and the show will be on display for the entirety of the month.

Keesey works in oil and acrylic, with a style that is both surreal and impressionistic. He stated that his surreal art is based on his dreams and fears, while his impressionism works are mainly from plein air painting.

For the past eight years, Keesey has been working and perfecting his craft as an artist. Formerly a construction worker, he made the decision to go for his dreams and passions as an artist, showing his work in several York and Harrisburg spaces.

Following Keesey’s exhibit, Joanne Young Stephan will bring her collection of artwork to Mulberry Art Studios in April for her “Retrospective” exhibit. The show will open with a First Friday reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on April 4 and will remain on

Dinner will celebrate 30 years of LightShine Ministries

For three decades, LightShine Ministries in Mount Joy has been bringing the love and light of God to the people of Alaska. You can support this mission at a dinner celebrating the organization’s 30th anniversary.

The meal will be held at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, on Friday, April 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will start with appetizers at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Beginning at 7 p.m., members of LightShine Ministries will share testimonies and discuss the 17 mission teams serving this year as well as long-term goals of the ministry, said Nancy Shaffer, who is organizing the event. Dinner will feature roast turkey, stuffing, baked ham, vegetables, mashed potatoes and a large assortment of homemade desserts.

LightShine International Ministries began as a follow-up ministry for a music outreach to the biker and rock music culture, founded by Tom Denlinger and Jeff Zimmerman. Influenced by Keith Green and Resurrection Band, the ministry

initially focused on Christian metal music before transitioning to mission work in Alaska after Denlinger felt called by God to serve people in the state. Since 1995, LightShine has sent teams to support churches and youth camps, expanding its reach through leadership training. With a base in Palmer, Alaska, the ministry continues to grow, strengthening local churches and other outreach programs.

“For 30 years, we have been offering assistance to brothers and sisters in Christ by helping them build His Kingdom in the hearts of the people in Alaska,” Shaffer said. “We offer short-term missionary opportunities for people who love people, love the outdoors and desire to serve in places where churches need help.”

The organization assists churches in remote areas to build Bible camps and maintain their church buildings.

“Our calling is unique,” Shaffer said. “Men and women who do not feel gifted to preach or start churches have been encouraged throughout the years by using their hands to serve the Lord by working

with us. We make it our goal not only to minister to the church we are serving, but also to encourage our team members as well.”

She invites anyone who is interested in discovering more about the ministry to come to the dinner.

“This is our first fundraising dinner for our ministry,” she said. “The dinner is to raise funds to complete our mission base located in Palmer, Alaska. The projects include finishing the upstairs of the house, building a garage for the mission base director and his wife living at the base and then building a main garage to house our vehicles and tools.”

Coming to the event provides an opportunity to hear directly from the

Concert to feature string music

Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will host the Two Rivers Chamber Music String Quartet on Saturday, March 22, at 7 p.m. The program is part of the church’s Starlight Tea Concert Series.

Three of the current members started their study on their instruments at ages 5, 6, and 8. They have performed with the Air Force Strings, National Philharmonic, Maryland Symphony, and Harrisburg Symphony, to name a few. Their extensive repertoire ranges from Bach and Mozart to film scores.

Admission is free, and a freewill offering will be received. Tea and cookies will be served following the concert.

Two Rivers Chamber Music is based in Maryland and was founded by identical twin brothers Michael and Matthew Polonchak in 2013. “This is really a show worth seeing because everyone is so talented,” said Finneghan. “The most important thing is the message, which is you should be happy and smiling even during difficult circumstances. I’m hoping people will leave the show with refreshed attitudes.”

Auditions for “Singin’ in the Rain” were conducted during the first week of December, and the cast and crew really started their hard work on the production in early January. Since then, the students have been rehearsing four weeknights and Saturdays each week.

“I’ve been doing this a long time, and it goes beyond the show,” said Timothy. “The more you do it, the bigger web you make. It’s really an experience of being part of something that’s bigger than yourself. It’s something everybody should try.”

For the cast and crew, “Singin’ in the Rain” has been both a journey and a destination. It’s been a lot of hard work, but the payoff makes everything worth it in the end.

“(The four-month process) is like a snowball rolling down a hill,” said Timothy. “(During the public performances) the heart is beating fast, but when

the curtain goes up, all you have to do is put a smile on your face and do what you’ve been practicing. This is my group. It’s just an incredible family. It’s the culmination of everything. It’s just really good.”

“My castmates are just kind and hardworking, so it’s been easy to find camaraderie,” said Finneghan. “I’m trying to be a role model for the underclassmen. It’s all about leaving a legacy. (MTPA) is an amazing program.”

“It’s pretty easy to develop camaraderie with the cast because everyone’s
