Those looking for a place to enjoy a free Thanksgiving meal are invited to enjoy food and fellowship at Hopewell Church, 2286 Hopewell Road, Elverson, on Thursday, Nov. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For those unable to dine in person, there will also be takeout meals ready for pickup, with free delivery available for those who live within 5 miles of the church.
The event, being held for the fifth time at the church, is being organized by congregation member Misty Stoltzfus, who started the outreach to honor her father, who passed away on Thanksgiving several years ago.
Between 50 to 75 diners ate at the church last year, she said, noting that the buffet-style meal is served in the church’s fellowship hall, which is decorated with a fall theme.

People in need of nonperishables are invited to visit local food-sharing boxes that have been established in the area. The boxes are regularly stocked with essentials like canned goods, pasta and other staples.
The area’s newest box, called Pumpkin’s Pantry, was installed on Oct. 31 at Historic Poole Forge, 1940 Main St., Narvon (Churchtown). The pantry is named for the site’s resident cat.
The food pantry box, which was donated by Churchtown Therapeutic Massage, currently contains nonperishables, including canned
soup, peanut butter and applesauce, as well as boxed goods like cereal. The pantry is located next to the site’s book-sharing box, and it is available during Poole Forge’s operating hours, from dawn to dusk.
“I wanted it to debut during the Thanksgiving season,” said Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. “It is weather resistant, and I wanted something that was dignified for people to help (themselves).”
The box is emblazoned with the words “Take if you need” and “Give if you can.” “We want people to donate things,” said Ekdahl. “Even

The 34th annual Turkey Bowl will be run on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 27, at Tel Hai Camp & Retreat in Honey Brook. The event will feature a 5K cross-country race that will take participants through the camp and around the lake. The event will also include a 1-mile children’s fun run.

This year’s event will begin with registration and race packet pickup from 7:45 to 9:20 a.m. in the camp’s dining hall. The fun run, which is open to children age 12 and under, will begin at 9:10 a.m. Parents may run alongside their child in the fun run at no charge. The 5K race will follow at 9:40 a.m.
Second Wind Race Timing will provide chip timing for the 5K race again this year. Online registration and mail-in registration forms can be accessed from the Turkey Bowl page of the camp’s website. Online registration will be open until the end of check-in on race day. Participants will need to register online before they arrive or when they arrive using their cellphones.
According to Bruce Gregory, camp director, last year’s participants had to brave running and walking through the rain.
“We had 373 finishers in the 5K race and 46 finishers in the 1-mile children’s fun fun,” he reported. “Considering it was a rainy morning, we had a good turnout. We are hoping for good weather
this year.”
The 5K is a 3.1-mile race that will cover a mixture of paved, gravel and grassy paths, including some hills. The kids’ fun run will stay on the main campus.
Children who complete the fun run will receive a finisher’s medal. First-place trophies will be awarded to the overall female and male runners of the 5K, and medals will be given to the top three finishers in various age groups.
Last year, Frankie Disilvestro of Honey Brook was the first male finisher in the 5K, with a time of 16 minutes and 42 seconds. The overall female winner was Laura Posh of Morgantown, with a time of 20:33.
Gregory said the race has become a popular Thanksgiving Day tradition in the area. Both local runners and out-of-town visitors for the holiday participate in the event. “Besides the Honey Brook areas, I know we have runners from the Downingtown area, the Gap and Oxford areas and the New Holland area,” he stated, adding, “We are sponsored by over 150 local businesses and individuals who are listed on the Turkey Bowl page of our website.”
banquet and luncheon facilities and offers retreat programs for churches, Christian schools and other related organizations.
Special events include a Mother & Daughter Spring Getaway offered in May and a Dad & Lad Camp offered in June.
Tel Hai Camp & Retreat also offers events that are open to the community, including spaghetti dinners and an annual vendor and craft fair. Information about the activities can be found at www.facebook .com/TelHaiCampRetreat.
To register for the Turkey Bowl, visit www.telhai camp.org/events/turkey -bowl-run. Registration and a course map are also available by visiting www .runsignup.com, choosing “Find a Race” and then selecting “34th Annual 5K Turkey Bowl Race.” Event T-shirts will be available on race day while supplies last.

Proceeds from the event are used to benefit Tel Hai Camp & Retreat, which is celebrating 75 years of camping ministry this year. According to a history of the camp, “Tel Hai” Camp, meaning “Hill of Life” in Hebrew, was founded in 1950 and incorporated in 1951 as an independent, nonprofit, Christian camp.
The board of directors, comprising members from Maple Grove Mennonite Church in Atglen and Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown, developed a camp program for urban and local children. A farm was purchased north of Beaver Dam Road in Honey Brook, and the camp was started in a farmhouse. In 1956, the camp was moved to the woods on the south side of the road. In 1996, another 40 acres was added to the east of the site.
Today, the facility includes a gymnasium; a miniature golf course; a gaga court; an archery range and rifle range; a swimming pool; a climbing wall; and a challenge course, which includes a giant swing and zip line. The camp also offers
The camp is located along Beaver Dam Road, 1.5 miles east of Route 10. The GPS address is 31 Lasso Drive, Honey Brook. There will be free parking and rest room facilities available. Parking will be located in the field by the lake on the north side of Beaver Dam Road.

“Between the pickup and delivery orders and the people that came to the church, we fed around 150 people,” she reported.
This year’s menu will include turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans and corn, cranberry sauce and rolls and beverages. For dessert, there will be homemade pumpkin and apple pie.
The food will be prepared by local chef Jamie Francis, who will come to the church earlier in the week to prepare the turkeys. “He has his own catering business,” noted Stoltzfus.
As in years past, the turkeys are being donated by the Twin Valley Food Pantry. The potatoes are donated by Mast Farm - Paul Mast is a church member - and apple cider
is provided by Weaver’s Orchard. Local farmers donate corn, which is frozen fresh over the summer.
Stoltzfus pointed out that the meal has become a tradition for several area families and individuals.
Notably, a 99-year-old local resident has had his meal delivered since the program started at the church when he was 95.
“His daughter signed him up for a meal, and we will deliver the meal to him,” she said.
A Thanksgiving tradition that some people observe is to express what they are thankful for. At the church, there will be a place for diners to write down what they are grateful for as well as to ask for prayers.
Volunteers from the
church as well as the community help with meal prep, setup and breakdown. They also donate food items. “About 10 volunteers come to decorate, peel potatoes and prep the cranberry sauce the day before,” Stoltzfus said. “The day of, we probably have 60 volunteers.” She noted that all volunteers receive a meal as well.
Leftover food from the dinner goes to the Hope Rescue Mission in Reading, which serves homeless men in Berks County. Stoltzfus said that she plans to continue the free Thanksgiving meal, noting it is ideal for people who are alone and those who do not want to deal with cooking and cleanup, as well as those with no family in
the area. “The food is so good; I want people to come,” she said. “It’s busy, but it’s totally worth it. I have been blessed by the people I have met, including people (from the community) and the volunteers. It has been good.”
To register for the event, to request delivery or to order a takeout meal by Sunday, Nov. 23, call the church office at 610286-6308 or email stoltz fusmisty4@gmail.com.
Registration can also be completed by visiting www.hopewellchurch.org, clicking on “Events” and choosing “Thanksgiving Meal” on the calendar.

The Chester County Mobile Crisis Resolution Teams support community members experiencing mental health crises.
Chester County introduced its Human Needs Network (HNN) last year, bringing a local focus to helping residents who are experiencing mental health concerns, are impacted by behavioral health issues, or are experiencing a housing crisis. At the core of the HNN is a locally based contact center and mobile crisis resolution teams. The key purpose in establishing the program - and its 988 suicide and crisis lifeline service - was to save lives.
One year later, Chester County’s HNN is fielding an average of 1,500 distress calls each month and deploying about 150 mobile crisis teams monthly to support individuals experiencing

acute crises.
Trained counselors at the Chester County HNN Contact Center in West Chester respond to calls when anyone in the county dials 988, the three-digit national crisis line. Established as the national suicide lifeline in 2022, this number operates alongside the existing 10-digit lifeline, which also remains available for callers in distress. All calls are confidential, and counselors carefully evaluate the caller’s needs during the conversation.
In most cases, the 988 phone call and the resources provided are sufficient. However, if additional help is needed, a two-person Mobile Crisis Resolution Team may be dispatched to meet the caller in his or her community. Each team consists of one clinician and one certified peer specialist, each bringing unique expertise. Certified peer specialists have personal lived experience with mental health challenges and are now in recovery. They become certified through comprehensive training and internships.
When they are dispatched, Chester County’s Mobile Crisis Resolution Teams assess various situations, from someone who is very upset and may be acting out to someone who may be considering suicide. After the initial contact and support or treatment decisions are made, the teams will follow up with those they have helped.
The Mobile Crisis Resolution Teams are currently based in Coatesville, with a satellite office in Phoenixville, and are dispatched by crisis counselors at the

“Well, it’s one for the money, two for the show. Three to get ready, now go, cat, go.”
In the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, Elvis Presley was a cultural icon. Known as “The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” Elvis had an enormous influence on what pop music has become today. No one ever stepped on his blue suede shoes.
But many have tried to
impersonate “The King,” with some fine-tuning their craft remarkably. One of those is local impersonator Jeff Krick.
“He’s got such a big following,” said Beth Coblentz, the director of Terre Hill Area Senior Connections (THASC), of Krick. “It’s such a variety of people who listen to him.
He’s going to be attracting so many people from so many different age groups. Elvis is so well known, and this impersonator is good
“We’d like it to help our budget and help with our programs for next year,” said Coblentz. “We’re self-sufficient. We’re trying to raise money for Terre Hill Area Senior Connections. My job is to bring in programs that seniors enjoy. We try to keep our programs cost efficient.”
THASC, which is housed inside of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 105 W. Main St., Terre Hill, is open Mondays and Thurs -

of this year. The ministry has gained momentum through programs like the upcoming Christmas with

into the Christmas spirit. It’s going to be a good time and a fun atmosphere.”
That Sunday evening’s festivities will begin with refreshments at 6 p.m. Krick will perform his Elvis numbers from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
“It’s not only about the Elvis fundraiser,” said Coblentz. “We want to further expand and reach out to other older adults. We want to bring in these connections. We want people to come and enjoy it. The holidays can be such a lonely time of the year.”
THASC officials are hoping that a couple hundred people will attend the first-time event.
own center. We want to provide more to the people who are there. When they come, we want them to feel welcome and safe.”
“We have a variety of people coming,” added Coblentz. “Some are wives and husbands. Some are widowers. Our goal is to bring them in and have them socialize. We’re wanting people to connect and serve in our community. We want them to live healthy lives. We don’t want them sitting at home feeling lonely. We want them to feel they belong.”

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is seeking volunteers. VITA provides free tax preparation services for
and moderate-income households. Volunteers are needed to serve as greeters and tax preparers at multiple loca-
tions, as well as data entry starters at the Coatesville location. The hours are flexible. No experience is necessary, and free training is provided. For more information or to volunteer, visit www.vitafreetaxhelp.org or call 610-380-9099.

“There’s a group of people who attend St. Paul’s, and they had a dream,” said Coblentz. “They wanted to find a way to minister to others. They prayed about it, and they realized there was a need to reach out to seniors in the Terre Hill area. We started with a soft opening in January. Once we started getting the programs, it just took off.”

small contributions make a difference.”

Ekdahl noted that only nonperishable food items that are not expired or open should be placed in the box. She said the box is ideal for senior citizens on a fixed income or for a family facing an unexpected hardship.
Ekdahl announced the opening of Pumpkin’s Pantry at www.facebook .com/pooleforge. In a post dated Oct. 31, Ekdahl stated, “Even one or two items make a real impact. Next time you’re at the store, grab an extra can of soup, a box of pasta or a jar of peanut butter. Small acts of kindness create lasting change.”
A Little Free Pantry can be found at Living God Lutheran Church, 3200 Horseshoe Pike (Route
322), Honey Brook. According to Julie Funk, church council president and a board member of the Honey Brook Food Pantry, the box is always stocked with quality food donated by the church congregation. She noted that there is also a place where visitors can write down their needs, such as sugar-free items or gluten-free products.
“Our pantry is alive and well. It has been embraced by the church. We fill it every day. And we receive notes from people who need special items,” Funk said, noting a small quantity of cat and dog food is also included. “We provide cereals and oatmeal; fruit; macaroni and cheese; snacks, like granola bars; soups and canned pasta; pasta and sauce; Hormel
complete microwave meals; (canned) chicken, tuna and ham; and canned vegetables. We also try to put a few personal care items in there.”
Another Blessing Box is located next to the Birdsboro Borough police station at the corner of Cinder and Mill streets. It was put in place by Girl Scouts from Birdsboro Troop 1080, who installed the box as part of their Bronze Award Project in May of 2023.
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 548 Old Swede Road, Douglassville, also has its own food pantry box. It is located just outside the main entrance of the church and can be accessed anytime. Residents in need of food assistance can stop and take what they need. For more information, contact the church office at 610-385-6616.
Free Library. The community food box at the township building was put into place by Nathan Lutz, a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Lutz also installed a box at the church, located at 1040 Chestnut Tree Road, Honey Brook; at the Village Library, 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown; and at the Hearts in Hands Community Center, located in the Indian Run mobile home park at 1 Lenape Way, Honey Brook.
According to www.ittakes avillagecc.org/food-boxes .html, the food boxes are a great resource for the homeless, people who have experienced hard times and hungry school students. The boxes, which operate on an honor system, are unlocked and can be accessed by anyone 24 hours a day.
