TVHS Band Racks Up Awards

he Twin Valley High School (TVHS) marching band is having an award-winning competition season, gathering accolades along the way.

Most recently, the band placed first at the Baron Invitational, which took place on Oct. 25 at Manheim Central High School, and also took home the award for High Color Guard. At the Pennridge High School Cavalcade of Bands Competition on Oct. 16, the band finished first in its division and took home the awards for High Color Guard and High Percussion. In September, the band placed first at the Cedar Crest Sound Off Cavalcade of Bands Competition, which was the first competition of the season.

“We have had an excellent season thus far,” said Robert Bennett, director of bands, noting that the

band includes 53 members and is competing in the Cavalcade of Bands Liberty A division.

The show this year is titled “Superstition,” and it features solos from the band’s two drum majors, Sophia Moyer and Cecilia Skoniczin.

“The show plays on the common

tropes of people’s superstitions, both good and bad,” explained Bennett. “Bad luck elements (are included), like walking under ladders, black cats, ‘snake eyes’ on dice, the number 13 and mirrors breaking. Good luck elements (are) four-leaf clovers, the number 7 and wishing upon stars. The show

“It is a tangible reminder that while hunger exists within our community and the world at large, there is hope,” said Misty Toothman, president of the Rotary Club of Twin Valley when describing the upcoming Empty Bowls fundraiser.

“The empty bowls symbolize the need and the generosity of the community coming together to support the (Twin Valley) food pantry.”

The ninth annual Empty Bowls

has been received well in both the competitive environment and here at home for Friday night football games.”

In addition to competing against other high schools, the marching band was featured this year on 6 ABC’s “School Spirit” segment. During the television program,

event will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Twin Valley on Thursday, Nov. 6, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St., Morgantown. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Twin Valley Food Pantry (TVFP), which is housed at the church.

The local event is part of a worldwide program that is designed to raise awareness about hunger and as a reminder that “someone’s bowl is always empty.”

At Empty Bowl events held worldwide, local artists create and donate

handmade ceramic bowls, after which community members gather for a soup dinner and select a bowl to keep.

At the local event, ticketholders will receive a handmade ceramic bowl and the opportunity to sample a variety of soups. Children age 10 and under may eat for free.

The soup will be provided by local restaurants, Rotary Club members and the kitchens at Tel Hai Retirement Community and Twin Valley High School (TVHS). “We will have pizza soup, cream of

It’s an amazing experience for leadership, and also it’s a family here.”

Band members celebrate their victory at the Cedar Crest Sound Off Cavalcade of Bands Competition.

The band also performed for all home and away football games this season and was featured during the Honey Brook Halloween Parade and the Elverson Parade. It will perform in two local Christmas parades.

How To Maintain Older Vehicles

New cars have been costly for quite some time, so motorists may wonder how they can get more mileage out of their existing vehicles.

Drivers can take the following steps to keep their existing cars running smoothly for years to come.

- Take care of the timing belt . Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot

run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt, which helps to synchronize movements of various components. Owner’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt, but they generally must be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles. Although replacement is required infrequently, drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing

belts. During the early months of the pandemic, many people learned that infrequent driving can cause a timing belt to fail before it reaches the projected mile marker. Aging drivers should keep this fact in mind if they do not drive as much as they used to.

- Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Popular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to replace their brake fluid every two years. Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major brake work is required.

- Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they burn. For this reason, owners of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often than they would if their vehicles were brand new. These checks also provide a way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.

- Don’t skip maintenance appointments . Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best to keep up with maintenance on any car, especially if the car is older. Routine tune-ups and oil changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul.

The rising cost of new cars may compel people to keep their cars longer than they might have anticipated. A few simple maintenance measures may help to prolong the life of a vehicle.
