Each year, the Twin Valley High School (TVHS) Mini-THON club focuses on fundraising activities to benefit Four Diamonds, a nonprofit organization with a mission to conquer childhood cancer.
The most recent fundraiser was a car wash held on Sept. 20 during Honey Brook Harmony Day at the Honey Brook American Legion. Visitors were asked to make a donation to the charity in return for a free car wash.
Sarah Lerch, who is the club overall along with Ava Taylor, reported that the students washed more than 20 cars during the event, which ran from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“We raised $558 from the car wash,” she reported. “We had a steady line all day. People are pretty
generous. They usually gave us $10 or $20.”
The club’s fundraising activities are held year-round, even when
school is not in session. “We did a car wash at Twin Valley Elementary School in August. We raised a little over $400,” said Sarah.

Chester County 4-H recently recognized exceptional leaders among its members, presenting the Spirit of 4-H Award to one individual and Certificates of Achievement to four others who demonstrated dedication and leadership within their clubs. According to Penn State Extension, 4-H club leaders nominate one member from each club who “demonstrated the most spirit, enthusiasm and willingness to do anything for 4-H or the community.” Once nominated, the members are asked to complete and return an application to be reviewed by the 4-H Program Development Committee, which selects the Chester County 4-H member who is most deserving of the award.

The 2025 Apple Festival will be presented by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) at Historic Joanna Furnace on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 12, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature apple-themed foods, family activities and a flea and craft market. Admission is free and open to the public.
Extension educator Toni Stuetz explained that the nominees are required to answer six questions on the application: “What does 4-H mean to you?” “How has 4-H had an impact in your life?” “What kind of community involvement have you had with 4-H and on our own?” “How have used the skills you have learned in 4-H in your life so far?” “Is there anything else we should know about your involvement in 4-H?” “What do you think you can do to tell people about 4-H and recruit new members?”
Stuetz noted that students frequently talk about their involvement in the Chester County 4-H Fair on their applications. Held annually at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook, the event includes a series of shows and exhibits that showcase the work of the

Drivers go to great lengths to ensure that they take good care of what’s under the hood of their vehicles. But it’s equally beneficial to tend to the exterior of a vehicle, including its paint job.
According to Popular Mechanics, oxidation can adversely affect ironbased metals. That can put vehicles in jeopardy and take significant time off their life expectancy. The good news is that rust and other issues that can affect a vehicle’s paint job and appearance are typically avoidable. That should be music to the ears of new vehicle owners, who likely need no reminder of the sizable financial investment required to drive off the lot with a fresh set of
wheels. Drivers who want their cars and trucks to maintain their looks over the long haul can consider these simple strategies to protect their paint jobs.
• Make car washes part of your vehicle maintenance routine. Over time, contaminants such as pollen, dust, and pollutants can settle on a vehicle’s exterior, potentially jeopardizing the paint job. Routine car washes can prevent such damage and help a car look like it was just driven off the lot.
• Wax the exterior of the vehicle. The automotive experts at Carfax report that waxing is a significant and simple way to protect vehicle paint. Carfax notes that certain paste waxes contain mild abrasives that help remove fine scratches from painted surfaces.
Wax also can protect paint jobs from fading related to exposure to ultraviolet rays. That’s especially noteworthy for drivers who do not routinely park their cars in a garage.
• Use a car cover. Car covers may or may not be practical for cars that drivers use every day, but they are an effective way to protect a paint job from the elements. Drivers who have a spare car they rarely drive or even those who do not drive their primary vehicle a lot each day can purchase a universal-fit car cover or a premium cover designed specifically for their vehicles. Car covers protect paint jobs from ultraviolet rays and the elements and may reduce the need for more frequent trips to the car wash.
• Park in the shade, but choose spots wisely. Parking in the shade may protect vehicles from the
ultraviolet rays of the sun, but it’s important that drivers pick the right shady spot to park their cars and trucks. A shade tree might seem like a great ally to vehicle owners, but if birds nest or rest in the tree, drivers could be exposing their cars to bird droppings. Bird droppings are high in uric acid, which quickly damage a vehicle’s exterior. Parking directly beneath a tree also might expose the paint job to sap or fallen leaves or berries, each of which can adversely impact vehicle exteriors. If you plan to park in the shade to protect a vehicle’s paint job, ideally choose a spot that is not directly beneath the tree. A well-maintained paint job can improve the appearance and life expectancy of a vehicle, which is something drivers should keep in mind as they hope to get the most out of their automotive investment.

“We’re hoping to do it at an elementary center this year,” Sarah said, noting that during previous years it took place at TVHS. “This year, we are unsure about the vendor sale again,
but we will have crafts (for sale) at Breakfast with Santa.”
“We are also going to do a miniMini-THON for middle-schoolers again this year,” she added.
The main fundraiser of the student-run club is its Mini-THON. The dance marathon is modeled after the Penn State THON, which raises money for families with children being treated for cancer at Penn State Children’s Hospital. Last year, the Twin Valley event raised $49,598. This school year’s Mini-THON at TVHS is set for Friday, April 24, 2026, from 5
charge to attend the meeting, which is designed for people age 45 and over who are experiencing loneliness. Snacks will be provided. For additional details, visit the “Lonely No More Ministries” Facebook page.

“We have eight officers, and we have 30-plus general members,” noted Sarah. “The general membership meets every Friday, and we have an officers’ meeting on Thursdays. We plan things and explain what each person has to do. Sometimes what we ask requires work outside of the meetings.”
She added that club members work hard at fundraising because it
benefits a local charity. “People (join the club) because it directly impacts the community,” she explained. “We have families that we support in the Twin Valley community who are affected by pediatric cancer. I think it’s way to help out, and (we know) that the money goes directly to pediatric cancer (research).”

“It’s a really popular event for the community, especially in the fall when the leaves are turning and the weather is cooler,” said Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. “People can shop at the flea market, pick up some of our soups and apple foods and make a scarecrow. And there are kids’ activities.”
An apple pancake breakfast will be served in the mule stable from 7 to 11 a.m. on both days. The breakfast menu will include all-you-can-eat apple pancakes, plus each patron will be served a piece of county sausage with juice or coffee.
Apple favorites that will be served throughout the weekend will include apple dumplings, apple pies, apple crisp, apple bread, homemade caramel apples with various toppings and apple fritters.
The 19th-century Joanna Furnace apple cider press will operate each day with continuous demonstrations. Freshly pressed cider by the cup and by the half-gallon will be available to take home.
Mabel’s Iron-Kettle Soups, cooked over actual open fires, will also be featured. Varieties will include chicken corn noodle, beef vegetable and ham and bean with rivels. “Mabel’s Iron-Kettle Soups recipes can be traced back to the meals served to 19th-century furnace workers’ families,” noted Zerr. “These signature soups are also available by the quart for taking home and can be frozen to be enjoyed later.”
In addition to the apple-related menu, there will be chicken potpie, also available by the quart for taking home; pulled pork and chicken sandwiches; macaroni and cheese; chili; hamburgers; hot dogs; french fries; sausage sandwiches; and beverages including soda, water and coffee. Wine and craft beer will also be available.
“We will have more food this year than in past years,” Zerr noted. Boy Scouts from Troop 543 from Plowville will offer hamburger and
hot dogs, as well as egg and bacon breakfast sandwiches. Scouts from Troop 543G will sell cupcakes. Troop 241 from Alleghenyville will sell sausage sandwiches, and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church from Geigertown will sell pulled pork and roast beef sandwiches.
An apple dessert contest will take place on Oct. 10. Categories will include cakes/breads, cookies, pies and miscellaneous desserts. The food items along with a recipe must be brought to the festival food court area between 8 and 9 a.m. Judging will take place at 10 a.m. After judging, leftover entries will be sold by the slice. Winners in each category will receive a cash prize plus two complimentary passes to the upcoming Christmas at Joanna event. A special youth category will also be available for young bakers under the age of 18. Details about the apple baking contest can be found at www.harycreek.org.
Those with questions may contact Ruth at 484-437-2801.
A flea market, featuring more than 100 vendors and more than a dozen crafters, will be open both days beginning at 7 a.m. Booths can be reserved and set up on Friday, Oct. 10, from noon to 5 p.m. or on Oct 11 starting at 6 a.m.
“Joanna Store will come out with their food truck selling hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, sides and beverages on Oct. 10, the day before the festival starts on setup day. The general public is welcome to stop in as well,” said Zerr. “Also on Friday, beginning at noon, we will have our open-fire, kettle-cooked soups available for purchase in case people want to get them early. They can be bought by the quart to take home.”
Family activities throughout the weekend will start at 9 a.m. each day on Saturday and Sunday.
Events will include scarecrow building, pumpkin painting, hayrides, face painting and rides on the Apple Barrel Express.
Zerr said that HCVHA volunteers have been busy this year sewing and patching shirts and pants for a scarecrow-making booth. Visitors can create their very own scarecrow, or they can purchase a scarecrow kit to build one at home.
Six of the historic Joanna Furnace buildings will be open with costumed interpreters retelling the full historical story of the 19th-century ironworks and village.
Historic Joanna Furnace is located at 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown, just off Route 10. Parking will be available on-site for a donation. For more information, visit the previously mentioned website or www .facebook.com/historicjoanna furnace or call 610-286-0388.

4-H members throughout the year
“They write about 4-H contests, their volunteer activities, participation in the fair and in their clubs,” she said. “The nomination form that the leader submits is everything from two to four sentences to a whole essay.” She noted that Certificate of Achievement winners, which are honorable mentions for the Spirit Award, may be nominated again.
In 2025, youths who were recognized with Certificates of Achievement are Alexis McCafferty, Audrey Ibach, Arush Dubey and Megan Johnson.
Alexis was nominated by both the Chester County 4-H Swine Club and the Golden Fleece 4-H Sheep Club for her leadership, effective communications and willingness to help others in the clubs. Lexi has been in 4-H for eight years, is a club officer and is a member in the Chester County 4-H livestock clubs.
Audrey is a seven-year member of the Northern Chester County 4-H Horse & Pony Club. She is active in her club, serving in different leadership positions, helping with her club’s horse show and participating in several community events representing 4-H. Audrey has attended the
4-H State Leadership Conference to expand her leadership and communication skills and has competed in the hippology contest to expand her equine skills.
Arush was nominated for his leadership in the Clover Engineering Club, a 4-H club he helped establish in the summer of 2024 to meet the interests in expanding 4-H STEM opportunities in Chester County. “Through robotics fairs, public speaking competitions and 4-H community service initiatives, I discovered my passions for leadership, STEM and a drive to serve my community.” Ronak is now a freshman attending the University of Pennsylvania. The Chester County Spirit of 4-H Award was started in 1998 by the Saddle Up 4-H Horse and Pony Club. In 2007, the club, with 4-H Advisory Committee support, made the Spirit of 4-H Award a countywide award that is presented to one Chester County 4-H member each year.
