Adisplay highlighting three local forgesWindsor Forge, Poole Forge and Spring Grove Forge - is currently being featured at the Caernarvon Historical Society building, 2148 Main St., Narvon. The public is invited to view the display, which will be open on Sunday, Sept. 28, from noon to 4 p.m. Society president Yvonne Styer explained that forges were used to heat pig iron from local furnaces to make it more malleable. “The forges purchased pig iron from the furnaces, and they pounded it (out). They processed it,” she explained. “The flat iron was given to the blacksmith or taken to Philadelphia to sell. The blacksmiths used (the metal) to make horseshoes, nails and pots and pans.”

For 12 years, Sam and Jill Waters of New Holland operated Still Waters Ministries, which offered faith-based counseling services for men and women at Conestoga Mennonite Church. After Jill passed away in April, Sam decided to take the ministry in a different direction by offering Lonely No More, a support group for people who are experiencing loneliness.
Lonely No More, open to men and women age 45 and over, will meet at the church from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the first and third Saturdays of the month from October through December, beginning on Oct. 4. There is no charge to attend the meeting. Snacks will be provided.
“Still Waters Ministries closed at the end of 2024. Now, God has called me into a new ministryLonely No More Ministries,” Sam said.
“The pig iron was delivered to the forges by a horse-drawn wagon that was specially built for handling iron,” added society member William Shirk.
Several pieces of the flattened pig iron are part of the display.
“We also have a map of where all the furnaces and forges are located that are in this area,” said Styer, noting the map includes Joanna
“We have tons of pictures. We have no photos of the actual Windsor Forge, but we have a picture of a stone that came out of it,” she noted. “Windsor Forge was owned by William Branson first. His daughter and her husband ran the forge for a period of time. Then, the Jenkins family acquired the forge. David Jenkins, the son of Robert Jenkins, was the first one who operated the forge. He worked for Branson, and he kept buying
On display is a carving of a lion’s head completed by Blanche Nevin, granddaughter of Robert Jenkins and the daughter of Franklin & Marshall College president John Williamson Nevin.
“She had a lion’s head at each corner of the bottom of the bed. Scott Martin allowed us to display it,” Styer said, noting that in addition to painting and writing poetry, Blanche was one of the few women sculptors of her time. She is known for her sculpted “Lion in the Park”

Sam said that loneliness is a growing problem locally and throughout the United States, citing a U.S. Surgeon General report in 2023 that declared an “epidemic” of loneliness affecting half of all American adults.
“Recent studies indicate that nearly 1 in 5 Americans report feeling lonely, with higher rates among younger adults and marginalized communities,” Sam stated, adding that loneliness is linked to various health issues, including depression, anxiety and even physical conditions like high blood pressure.
During the upcoming meetings, Sam aims to educate people

My mother was one of seven children, so when I was young, our home was the central gathering place for aunts, uncles and cousins.
At any given moment, a relative would show up at the door looking for support, advice or just camaraderie. Thanks to my mom, there was always a pot on the stove or a slow cooker filled with food for the guests so that they would never leave hungry. It was not uncommon for visitors to feast on homemade meatballs or Italian wedding soup.
My dad was an avid hunter, so the first day of deer hunting season meant a large and hearty breakfast for my dad and his friends, while I was busy in my room praying that none of them would come back with a deer. And, if they didn’t, it was certainly my fault.
As I grew older, the relatives became a nuisance to me. Just when we were sitting down to dinner or making popcorn in anticipation of watching a movie or TV show, relatives came knocking. And of course an extra chair was added to the table, and more popcorn was popped so they could join us in front of the television.
There were also numerous cookouts, birthday parties and Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to which all the aunts brought their special desserts. My mom had three sisters, and their specialties were blueberry muffins, cheesecake and cherry squares.
In addition, my grandmother hosted a spaghetti dinner with homemade meatballs and sauce every Sunday at her home to which many of the aunts, uncles and cousins attended. She actually made the spaghetti, which we called “homemades,” by hand. Mixing eggs, flour and other ingredients, she made the pasta dough and then ran it through the pasta machine to make long, thin strands of spaghetti, kind of like linguine.
She then hung the spaghetti to dry in anticipation of the Sunday gathering.
At all of these events, topics that should be avoided, such as religion and politics, became the focus. And while of course I love my aunts and uncles and numerous cousins, some of them were more challenging than others.
One of my aunts always made off-handed “compliments.” For example, she would look at a person’s outfit and remark, “Well, it must be comfortable.”
Or, “You know, they make these great at-home products for gray hair.”
Then there was the uncle who for some odd reason was a Washington Redskins fan (now Commanders) among a sea of Eagles fans. My cousin, who claimed to be a musician, could basically play only one song on his acoustic guitar, “Sweet Home Alabama.”
Now, years later, I long for
those days of regular family get-togethers. With the passing of time, what I once considered a nuisance is actually something that I now treasure. What felt bothersome at the time is now what I miss the most.
Thankfully, we have occasional “cousins’ lunches,” and the remaining family members gathered last year for my uncle’s 90th birthday. Everyone had a great time catching up and reminiscing and eating “homemades,” made by one of my cousins. Since
my aunts passed down their recipes, we also enjoyed blueberry muffins, cheesecake and cherry squares for dessert.
And I didn’t mind when my aunt said that my outfit looked comfortable and that I seemed to have more gray hair than the last time she saw me. Plus, we were all very happy when my cousin brought out his guitar and sang “Sweet Home Alabama.” And the evening ended perfectly when the Eagles beat the football team from Washington.

someone else who is experiencing the same things, and hopefully relationships can form from that.”
For example, attendees may take part in icebreaker activities. “If we have a large group, we will break into smaller (groups), and they will ask three questions of everyone at their table. Then, they will switch, and they can introduce the person that they met,” Sam explained.
While Sam admits that attending the first meeting may be difficult for some, he encourages those who may be experiencing loneliness to attend. He added that loneliness can even occur with people who have friends and family members because individuals may feel misunderstood or disconnected from others. “If you are hesitant about coming, you certainly should come out. It (may be) indicative of some of the underlying issues of loneliness,” he stated. “Get out and begin and the process.”
