Morgantown/Honey Brook

Fair Celebrates the Best of Chester County 4-H

Showcasing all the hard work that 4-H members complete throughout the year is the goal of the annual Chester County

4-H Fair. During the event, held at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook on Aug. 2 and Aug. 4 to 9, youths were able to show the animals that they have been raising and training as well as display the

various non-animal projects they completed, ranging from sewing and crafts to growing vegetables.

Some projects are completed during club meetings, while others are worked on at home. “It depends

Thanks to Berks County readers who took park in the annual Pages for Pets program, Reading District Libraries is sponsoring the adoption fee of Weebles, a 2-year-old female American pit bull terrier/Boston terrier from the Animal Rescue

League of Berks County (ARL).

During the Pages for Pets program, which ran from June 23 to July 25, community members were asked to read a total of 500,000 minutes. If the goal was met, the library district would sponsor the adoption fee of a shelter animal.

Honey Brook Harmony Day, presented in September by the Honey Brook Community Parentship (HBCP), generally features community yard sales, plus activities at the Honey Brook Community Library, the Honey Brook Fire Department and at local churches.

This year for the first time, Honey Brook Harmony Day, set for Saturday, Sept. 20, will feature the 5K Sweetwater Run and kids’ 1-mile fun run. The event will take place at a unique location - the Lanchester Landfill and Reclamation Center (LLARC), 7224 Division Highway, Narvon. Race-day registration will take place from 1 to 1:45 p.m., with the run start time at 2 p.m. Those who register by Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 1, will receive a discounted registration fee and an event T-shirt.

During the Sweetwater 5K at LLARC, participants will travel over wooded trails, grassy paths and segments of the Lanchester Nature Trail. “There is so much cool stuff at the landfill that people are unaware of,” said HBCP chair Julie Funk. “They have disc golf, nature trails and a lookout at the pavilion at the top where you have a fantastic view of Lancaster and Chester counties. It’s beautiful; it’s a cool place.”

5K runners and walkers will navigate two major hills along the course. The first climb will be an elevation gain from 919 feet to 1,056 feet along wooded and grassy paths, and the final ascent will be to the Eastern Overlook, an elevation gain from 1,020 feet to 1,156 feet.

Green Receives Academic Honor

Alyssa Green of Honey Brook recently received an Academic Excellence Award from the University of Rhode Island. She was recognized for academic excellence in marine affairs.

The University of Rhode Island presents Academic Excellence Awards each year to graduating seniors for their exceptional academic performance. Departmental faculty and deans select students for these awards based on grade point average and other indicators of excellence, such as the completion of an honors project, a research presentation, community service, and extraordinary professional and civic promise.

Sweetwater 5K

After reaching the scenic overlook, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding valley, runners and walkers will double back and travel a fast, mostly downhill route to finish back at the starting line. The kids’ 1-mile fun run will begin immediately after the 5K walkers and runners head up the hill.

“There are two areas with an incline, and then it levels off,” Funk explained. “You can also walk the 5K. The 1-mile fun run will take place at the lower end of the course that is fairly flat.”

The path will be clearly marked, and volunteers will help guide runners and walkers and provide water along the course. Post-race snacks will also be available.

“You are not running through garbage. It’s not a trash mountain; it’s not what (people) think,” said Funk. “There are all kinds of wildlife, like deer and eagles. It’s an interesting place, and they are doing important work for the environment.”

HBCP member Bob Watts, who is also the executive director of the Chester County Solid Waste Authority, which operates the landfill, offered the location for the first-time running and walking event. “They are excited to hold it there,” said Funk. “I’ve walked it with the Chester County Trail Club and felt accomplished when I finished it. There are parts that go up, so it’s a bit challenging, but it levels off and it’s all downhill when you go back. The view from the top is totally worth it.”

First-place medals will be given to the top overall female and male 5K runners, and there will be medals awarded to the top three male and female 5K run finishers in each age group. All child participants will receive a ribbon for participation.

Race proceeds will be used by the HBCP to support nonprofit groups in the Honey Brook area that provide food and emergency support services people in need. “The registration fee will be given back to community (organizations) in grants to support their work, such

as the Honey Brook Food Pantry, the library and Steeple to People,” Funk noted. More information about the Honey Brook Community Partnership is available at www.honey brookpartnership.com.

Funk added the running/walking event is named for a 1.5-mile-long tributary of the west branch of the Brandywine Creek, which originates in Honey Brook Borough and travels through both the borough and Honey Brook Township and flows all the way to Wilmington, Del. “The

Brandywine River actually begins in Honey Brook, and there is this tiny creek that was identified and named Sweetwater,” she said, noting the HBCP held a “Name the Brook” contest in 2021 to name the stream. For more information about the 5K and the 1-mile fun run and to register, visit www .runsignup.com/Race/ PA/Narvon/Honey BrookSweetwaterRun. A link to register is also available at www.honey brookborough.net/honey -brook-sweetwater-run.

The 5K course will take participants to the scenic outlook.

Kelly Laubach has been appointed as Chester County’s director of procurement and general services.

Laubach has 20 years of experience with the Berks County purchasing department, with 15 years as the department’s director. She also served on the board of the Pennsylvania Public Purchasing Association for 14 years, which included two terms as president.

In her new Chester County role, Kelly will work to maintain consistent and open purchasing practices

and will collaborate with county department heads to formulate short- and longterm strategic procurement plans to maximize buying power. She will also help to ensure the county receives what it pays for, as well as conducting spend analysis and developing plans to consolidate purchases.

met the goal by July 25. On July 28, the ARL announced that Weebles was the pet whose adoption fee would be covered through the community effort.

According to www.berks arl.org, Weebles has had a rough start to life and is learning how to make more friends. “Once she’s out of her kennel and feeling more comfortable and confident in herself, you’ll get to witness her tap-dancing skills whenever she gets excited,” the biography states. “Weebles is looking for a new forever home that will give her tons of love and support as well as some patience along the way.”

Those interested in Weebles may email adoption@ berksarl.org to set up a time to meet her.

home shortly thereafter.

“The Reading District Libraries used the funding from our budget to sponsor the program,” explained Marissa Guidara, youth services district consultant for Reading District Libraries.

For the first year of the program, Agent 007, a senior black cat, had his adoption fee sponsored and was adopted soon after. Last summer, Berks County readers successfully met the goal, and the ARL announced that Egypt, a 1-year-old pit bull, was the sponsored pet. She was adopted into her forever

During the Pages for Pets program, participants could read whatever they choose, including novels, e-books, audiobooks, newspapers or comics and graphic novels. They then logged their reading minutes at www.berkslibraries .org. The program’s progress was also displayed at each participating library, which included the Village Library of Morgantown and the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro.

“For Agent 007, they had specifically talked about that fact that he was a senior cat, which is a tough sell, and he was also difficult to adopt out because he is a black cat, and people have superstitions about that,” noted Guidara. “Last year, they chose Egypt. We are happy with whoever they choose; we are happy to support them.”

Guidara emphasized that the annual reading challenge was open to people of all ages. “Originally, the main target audience was kids and teens, but a lot of adults also wanted to participate, including a lot of older adults,” she noted. “It was an easy way for them to give back. Maybe they can’t financially support ARL, or they don’t have the ability to volunteer there, so this was a way they could do their part. Kids (can also) learn what they can accomplish when people work together.”

She added that Pages for Pets is designed to coincide with the Summer Reading Programs, which were offered at Berks County libraries. “Pages for Pets combines two things our See Weebles pg 5

on the club,” explained Toni Stuetz, Penn State Extension educator. “Every child that shows a dairy goat has to do a poster on some aspect of dairy goats. It could be about a breed or different parts of the goat. They present the posters at the club meeting and share their research and resources. Some of the kids do their projects at home as part of their learning.”

Lillian Petersheim of Elverson, a member of the Chester County 4-H Swine Club, showed the pig that she raised at the fair, and she also displayed several projects, including a floral arrangement and a small painting of a country sunset done in acrylic. “I was able to blend the colors without washing out my brush; it was a lot of fun to paint,” said Lillian, noting that she also added fireflies to the artwork. “Every time I see a sunset, I want to paint it.”

Also on display during fair week were projects by the Southern Chester County 4-H Cloverbuds Club. “(Cloverbuds) is a noncompetitive induction to 4-H,” Stuetz said. “Cloverbuds is designed for children between 5 and 8 years old, and they get to explore all the different things that 4-H has to offer.”

In addition to projects,

the fair included various livestock competitions, such as dairy, sheep, goat and swine shows, as well as a supreme livestock showmanship contest. The fair also included a Beef SkillA-Thon and a Sheep & Goat Skill-A-Thon, during which 4-H members take a written test prior to showing their animals. “They match byproducts with which animal they come from and identify breeds. It is a knowledge test,” explained Rachel Stoltzfus, assistant leader of the Chester County Beef Club. “We will score them, and they get ribbons.”

“The test is probably harder because you have to share your knowledge, but showing is a bigger deal,” added Lillian. “You work with that pig (or other animal) all year long to get into the show.”

Cameron Johnson of Honey Brook, another member of the Chester County 4-H Swine Club and a student at Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown, was on hand to show several hogs that he raised.

He noted that the judges assess the market hogs based on well-developed muscles and other factors like structural soundness and minimal excess fat.

“They are looking for a mus-

cular hog, with definition. You really want to see the shoulders and the rump,” he explained, noting that the pigs he raised averaged about 240 pounds each.

Cameron raised one pig this past year for a specific purpose - the pig was auctioned off with 100% of the proceeds going to support the medical expenses of a local 9-yearold child who had brain surgery. “Cameron and his family and Cedar Meadow Meats donated the pig. He raised it, and it is being sold to benefit the young lady,” noted Audrey Reith, extension educator. “His act of kindness has touched many in our agricultural community.”

4-H is the youth development program of Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, Cooperative Extension. The four H’s stand for head, heart, hands and health. 4-H membership is open to all boys and girls ages 8 to 18. violent or serious crimes. The unit works closely with local, state, and federal agencies to locate and remove high-risk individuals from the community. Strengthening this unit increases the ability of the office to act swiftly and reduce community risk.

The Motorcycle Unit provides high-visibility patrol and supports special events, escorts, and rapid-response needs. These deputies are highly trained in defensive maneuvering, motorcade coordination, and public engagement.

The K-9 Unit is currently undergoing a strategic expansion to meet increasing operational demands.

The Field Force Operations Unit is designed to manage large-scale events and incidents involving crowd control or civil unrest. The team includes three certified instructors and is in the process of ensuring all deputies receive Field Force Operations training. The unit emphasizes de-escalation, mobility, and public order management in rapidly evolving situations.

The Protective Intelligence Unit focuses on identifying, assessing, and managing threats to public officials, government buildings, and high-risk environments. Leveraging both proactive intelligence gathering and interagency collaboration, this unit monitors behaviors of concern and potential security risks. The goal is early intervention and continuous threat mitigation.
