Grand Opening Held at Honey Brook Skate Park

After years of planning, a grand opening of the Honey Brook Skate Park took place on July 11 at James A. Umble

Memorial Park. The event was part of the Fun Friday summer program, presented by the Honey Brook Township Recreation and Parks Board.

The state-of-the-art skatepark is

open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. “They (can enjoy the skatepark) on skates, inline skates, bikes, skateboards and little scooters,” said Kevin Dougherty, chair of the recreation and parks board. “It’s

Local Library Offers Summer Reading Program

The Honey Brook Community Library, 687 Compass Road, Honey Brook, is offering a variety of programming this summer for patrons of all ages as part of its Summer Reading Program, themed “Color Our World.”

Among the new offerings is a knitting club for youths who want to learn the art of knitting. The next scheduled gathering, led by library volunteer Heather Buffington, will be offered on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m.

“The program is for teens. They can bring their own knitting project,” Heather explained, noting she has

Park Ranger Connects People to Nature

While most people think of park rangers as people who are responsible for keeping parks and the people who visit them safe, their roles also include environmental education. Locally, park ranger Jared Brandt serves as the naturalist for French Creek State Park in Elverson and Marsh Creek State Park in Downingtown. Brandt frequently conducts educational programming for the parks and is a regular guest speaker at the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro. He conducts in-house programs during the library’s story time, and he hosts on-site programs at French Creek State Park, such as nature hikes and creek walks, where children search for creatures in the water.

The Community Courier recently asked Brandt about his role as park ranger and naturalist, which he began in 2019.

Community Courier: What are some of your job duties?

Brandt: As a naturalist for both French Creek and Marsh Creek state parks, I facilitate a host of programming, which includes outdoor recreation, like hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, etc., as well as interpretive and historical programming, which helps connect visitors to the parks’ resources. I also help with volunteer coordination. The volunteers at the parks are a pivotal entity.

Community Courier: What would people be surprised to learn about your job?

Skateboarders demonstrate their moves during the grand opening.

County Releases Community Health Assessment

The Chester County Health Department has released its latest Community Health Assessment (CHA), a detailed report that provides an in-depth look at the current health status of Chester County residents. The assessment highlights priority health concerns, factors that influence health, community strengths, and key areas where improvements are needed to foster a healthier community.

The CHA, which is conducted every three to five years, examines a wide range of health indicators, including rates of chronic diseases, access to health care, mental health, and health behaviors. It also looks at social determinants of health such as income, education,

Car Show Has New Date, New Location

When rain forced the cancelation of its spring car show in May, the Draggin’ Wagons Car Club not only had to schedule a new date, but it also had a find a new venue.

The show will now be held on Sunday, July 27, from noon to 4 p.m. at the recently opened new location of Jerry’s Pizza Pie, 5004 Horseshoe Pike (Route 322).

“All our shows used to be on Sunday, so we went back to the Sunday show format,” explained club member Ray Marvin. “We used to have the car shows at the Kemper building behind Wimpy & Dee’s on the first Sunday in May (for the spring show) and the fourth Sunday in September (for the fall show).

Kemper got too busy, and they needed the parking lot for equipment. We’re excited to still be in Honey Brook. It worked out.”

On the day of the car show, Jerry’s will not be open for business. However, there will be a food truck on hand at the car show and a sale of ice cream.

Vehicle owners of all makes and models are invited to participate. The show will welcome classic, antique and custom vehicles, including street rods, muscle cars, antique cars, motorcycles and trucks. Parking will be available in the pizza shop parking lot and the neighboring lots.

“Jerry’s Pizza Pie moved in June to the new building on Route 322,” noted Marvin.

“The hardware store, which is closed on Sunday, and Hoover (Building Special -

ists) gave us permission to expand.”

Those who choose to display their vehicles at the upcoming show will be asked to make a registration donation. Registration will take place on the day of the show. There will be no admission fee for spectators, but the club

asks that all guests bring nonperishable food items for donation to the Honey Brook Food Pantry.

At the upcoming event, trophy winners will be selected in nontraditional classes such as Chopped and Dropped, Cool Convertible, Cool Commercial, Cool

Like last fall’s show, the upcoming event will feature all makes and models of cars, like this 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air.

“Even if they already know how to knit, they can sit and knit with other teens,” Heather added.

Other summer programs include the following: Build & Play for people of all ages, Fridays, Aug. 1 and 15, at 10:15 a.m., featur -

Stories in the Shade with Miss Jennifer will be offered on Wednesdays through Aug. 6 at 10 a.m. Attendees should bring chairs or blankets for seating.

information or to register, call 610-273-3303 or email jspade@ccls.org

There is still time for patrons of all ages to sign up for the library’s summer reading incentive program. The program will run through Aug. 16.

There will also be a Stuffed Animal Sleepover on Tuesday, Aug. 12. Children should drop off a labeled stuffed animal at the library between 1 and 7:30 p.m. Library staff will then post pictures of the stuffed animals and their activities on Facebook. a Pickup will be on Wednesday, Aug. 13, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

With the exception of Stories in the Shade, registration is required for all programming. For more

Participants are asked to pick up their Summer Reading Program packages at the library to register and then start reading. Those who bring in their reading log weekly will receive a ticket to be entered into a drawing to earn prizes.

Those who bring in a nonperishable food item for the Honey Brook Food Pantry will earn one extra ticket.

Each age group has special reading requirements.

“Teens must read three YA (Young Adult) books or seven graphic novels each week to get their ticket,” she continued. “For adults, it’s two books for every ticket.”

Each group - preschool, school age, YA and adult - has three baskets participants can win.

For more information and a complete schedule of activities, visit www.honey brooklibrary.org or search for “Honey Brook Community Library” on Facebook.

“For preschoolers, they can have book read to them, and they color in one rectangle a week. For school-age children, they must read 30 minutes three times a week or be read to,” explained Therese Mauchline, programming librarian.

The Draggin’ Wagons Car Club, which has more than 60 members, meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Honey Brook Lions Club, 14 Mount Pleasant Road, Honey Brook, with the exception of December, when the club holds its annual holiday dinner. At the March meeting,

the club members nominate and vote on the nonprofit organizations that they will support in the coming year.

Membership forms and packets of information about the club will be available at the upcoming car show for prospective members. It is not necessary to own a classic car to become a club member.

Poole Forge To Present Stream Program

As part of a series of nature classes being offered this summer at Historic Poole Forge, 1940 Main St., Narvon, “What Lives in the Stream?” will be presented on Wednesday, July 23, from 1 to 2 p.m.

Biologist Brad Basehore

will teach attendees about the creatures that live in the Conestoga River that runs through Poole Forge.

free to all. The kids love it.”

The skatepark is made of concrete, and it features all the obstacles and challenges that skateboarders appreciate, including a metal strip where skateboarders can grind, which means performing tricks that include sliding on a surface using the metal trucks underneath a skateboard. “It has ramps and rails and a bowl, which looks like a swimming pool, and (it is surrounded by) blue metal to grind on,” said Dougherty. “It looks dangerous to me, but the kids have so much fun.”

Dougherty explained that the skatepark is part of the township’s improvement project at Umble Park. “As part of our 2019 Umble Park master plan, they put out a survey, and one of the improvements that people (requested) was a skatepark for the kids,” he noted. “(The township applied for and) received a DCNR (Department of Conservation and Natural Resources) grant for 50% (of the cost) of a skatepark. The board of supervisors approved the other 50%.”

The park was completed in November 2024. A grand opening was planned this spring but was canceled due to inclement weather.

Among the supporters of the project was the family

of the late Robert “Skate” Zamecki, who wanted a skatepark built to honor his memory. “His mother and sister in their grief asked if there could be a skatepark. I met them when they came to a Honey Brook Township park and rec meeting,” Dougherty recalled. “This was about six months before we started building it. It was already in the works, but they helped push it over the finish line.”

The grand opening featured free games, snacks, drinks and prizes. Representatives from SkateWagon were also on hand offering merchandise and skateboards and doing skateboarding demonstrations. “They will run a skate tournament on Harmony Day in September,” noted Dougherty.

The event also featured the unveiling of an informational kiosk created by Jackson Short, a member of Honey Brook Boy Scout Troop 9. The kiosk was built as part of Jackson’s Eagle Scout service project.

Fun Friday is held in collaboration with Gateway Baptist Church, which is located next to Umble Park.

Upcoming Fun Fridays events include the following: July 25, “Christmas in July” ornament painting, an introduction to pickleball and Movie Night at

Gateway Baptist Church; Aug. 1, making coffee filter flowers; Aug. 8, Spikeball and making paper bag kites; Aug. 15, disc golf course grand opening; Aug. 22, stained glass art; and Aug. 29, Movie Night at Gateway Baptist Church, a cornhole tournament and a bounce house. For more information about Fun Friday activities, visit www.face book.com/honeybrooktwp.

Dougherty noted that the skatepark provides people of all ages a place to skate at one location in a safe space, rather than in local parking

lots or on sidewalks.

“I saw a mom with her young daughter wearing a helmet and inline skates, and she was holding her hand, which made (all the working in creating the skatepark) worth it. It has been a long time coming,” he shared.

James A. Umble Park is located at 173 Suplee Road, Honey Brook. To learn more about the skatepark and to see videos of the grand opening skateboarding demonstrations, visit www.facebook.com/ honeybrookskatepark.

housing, and the environment. By analyzing these factors, the report provides a comprehensive overview of health in Chester County and identifies priorities that will guide health initiatives and improvement plans.

Community engagement and partners throughout Chester County were central to the assessment. Community feedback was gathered through a Community Health and Wellness Survey, with more

than 4,000 residents responding.

With the assistance of community partners, the Chester County Health Department will develop a Community Health Improvement Plan to address findings in the community health assessment. This will be available for everyone in Chester County to review once completed.

Brandt: How much programming we do with the local community and in the parks. It is always eye-opening to see how many people live near the parks and never visited them. We do a lot of events and programs in the parks.

Community Courier: What is your favorite part of the job?

Brandt: Connecting new visitors to the parks. Whether it’s libraries, private groups, etc., it is always rewarding to be able

to connect the resources at the parks to new visitors. Seeing visitors find a new trail, hobby or skill is the most rewarding part. Even more rewarding is seeing a first-time visitor return to the park.

Community Courier: What do you do in your spare time?

Brandt: Spend time with my wife and family. I enjoy traveling and finding new trails, birding locations and camping spots - if there is time.
