Rotary Club cleanup turns trash into treasure for Village Library
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Collecting trash and raising money for a good cause was the goal of the Litter for Literacy event, held on April 26 by the Rotary Club of Twin Valley. As part of the annual effort, club members along with students from the Twin Valley High School (TVHS) National Honor Society (NHS) helped clean up a 2.6-mile section of roadway on Route 23 from the Twin Valley Fire Department to the Botanery Barn.
Additionally, sponsors were asked to donate funds to support the cleanup, with all monies donated to the Village Library of Morgantown.
Cleaning up a stretch of Route 23 were Ron Moyer, club treasurer, along with NHS members, including TVHS juniors Maddy Vandergoes, Addison Ketterer and Maggie Stoltzfus and senior Amber Krohmer, who said they were not deterred by the rainy weather.
“The Rotary Club asked NHS if we had any volunteers, so we
volunteered,” said Maddy, noting
Spectators, players invited to experience vintage base ball
BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Brandywine Base Ball Club (BBC), a Chester County-based organization that plays the 1860s version of the game, is currently seeking players interested in joining the team as well as spectators looking to spend time immersed in the sport as it used to be played during the Civil War era.
Team members, who choose

imaginative old-time names like Stonewall, Tuffy and Shaggy, take the field without gloves and no modern equipment, wearing authentic uniforms.
Team members follow the 1864 rules of base ball (how it was originally spelled), which means that only one ball is used during the course of the game. “All of the vintage balls are hand-sewn, and traditionally you used one ball

because they did not have a lot of them,” said Jess Berzon, the team’s marketing officer. “They are traditional lemon peel balls, and they have this really interesting pattern. They are a little bit softer than a traditional baseball, which makes it easier for the players to catch it with their bare hands.”
She noted that the team is open to both men and women players. “Players can give it a try before joining,” said Berzon. “If you are interested and don’t have a lot of time, we are accepting players with different schedules.”
The BBC, which includes players from Montgomery, Chester and Delaware counties, plays a team from Philadelphia as well as the Diamond State team from Delaware, among others. “This team is basically the closest team for many people,” Berzon said, noting that the club’s home field is located at East Goshen

from pg 1
Park, 1661 Paoli Pike, West Chester. “Most people are in driving distance from East Goshen Park.”
One of the highlights of the year is when the team plays at the annual Duryea Day celebration held on Labor Day Weekend in Boyertown. The event features hundreds of vehicles on display as well as craft and food vendors. “Duryea Day really showcases the game. It is a big event with a lot of people,” said Berzon. “It is very historical.”
For spectators, attending a game is a way to experience a living history lesson. “They can cheer (on the players), and the spectators get engaged with the games,” Berzon said, noting that the team members are available to provide information about the game. “If you ask questions, it’s not like a formalized game, where you can’t talk to the players.”
In fact, players fre -
quently interact with the crowd and explain different aspects of the game.
“During one home game, they got people up batting with them. (They invited) people to try and hit,” Berzon noted. “They want people to play and people to learn.”
Even though the games are historically accurate, the players still enjoy winning. “The Brandywine BBC doesn’t just play - they celebrate vintage base ball,” Berzon added. “(The games are) as much about camaraderie as competition …and a tribute to the origins of America’s favorite pastime.”

ARL of Berks County receives grant
The Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) received a Rachael Ray Save Them All grant from national animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society. The grant, for the amount of $45,145, is for a program designed to help keep community cats in their habitat while offering veterinary support, Trap-Neuter-Vaccines-Release (TNVR) surgeries and education to the public.
According to ARL’s CEO Ashley Mikulsky, by no longer impounding healthy and thriving outdoor cats and kittens, the ARL has already seen and expects to continue to see a reduction in feline euthanasia, decreased length of stay, reduced disease outbreak and increased quality of care and positive outcomes. Mikulsky stated that through a combined cat lifesaving approach of both a robust intake
diversion program, TNVR and the 2025 rollout of a multiagency Community Cat Coalition, the ARL expects to finally achieve an annual live-release rate for cats of more than 90%.
The ARL is an active partner in the Best Friends Network, which offers help and support to shelters, rescue groups and other animal welfare organizations working to save lives in their communities.
The Rachael Ray Save Them All Grants is a grant program, administered by Best Friends and funded by The Rachael Ray Foundation, which provides grants to shelters for euthanasia reduction initiatives.
The Rachael Ray Foundation helps animals in need and is funded by a portion of proceeds from each sale of Ray’s pet food, Nutrish.

Camping options available
The Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association (PCOA) encourages members of the public to experience the great outdoors through camping in 2025. Although some federally operated campgrounds are closed this season due to staffing shortages, plenty of campsites across the state are open for reservations.
PCOA’s 220 independently owned campgrounds offer more than 37,000 campsites featuring amenities and outdoor activities. The campgrounds have a variety of camping options, including tent sites, big rig friendly campsites, and unique outdoor lodging units. Many have weekday availability and offer lower rates during nonpeak times. A full list of PCOA parks is available at www.pa camping.com, where people may also request a free copy of the printed “Pennsylvania Campground Directory.” For information about outdoor lodging options, visit www .paoutdoorlodging.com.
In addition, Pennsylvania’s public lands provide outdoor recreation with no day-use entrance fees. Visitors may access 124 state parks and 2.2 million acres of state forests open in their entirety. Pennsylvania is home to several national parks and historical sites managed by the National Park Service, all of which remain open with reduced staffing.
The Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association is a trade association
dedicated to representing the interests of campground owners throughout Pennsylvania. PCOA provides resources, networking opportunities, and advocacy to help its members succeed in the outdoor hospitality industry. Through initiatives like RV shows, the PCOA promotes camping as a way to experience the beauty of Pennsylvania and encourages RV enthusiasts to explore the state’s many independent campgrounds.

The NHS students explained that in order to be a part of the organization, members have to be chosen by their teachers.

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is accepting student applications for the 2025-26 Grow Pennsylvania Scholarship Grant Program, more commonly known as the Grow PA Grant.
The Grow PA Grant Program was authorized under Act 89 of 2024 to help reverse the trend of young Pennsylvanians seeking education and job opportunities in other states. The program offers grants of up to $5,000 per year for in-state students who attend college in Pennsylvania, pursue a degree in an in-demand occupation, and agree to work in that occupation in Pennsylvania after graduation.
Grant recipients will be required to work in Pennsylvania for 12 months for each year they receive the grant; failure to meet this requirement will result in the grant’s being converted to a loan that must be repaid.
PHEAA will administer the program for the Commonwealth of Penn -

The application and a list of eligible programs of study or majors can be found at www.pheaa.org/ growpa.

Shirey’s award notes that for the past eight years, he has organized a litter cleanup day that spans 80 locations in southern Chester County. During the event, Shirey manages more than 100 volunteers, assigning groups to specific locations and detailing what help is needed and what to do. Each year, the event grows.
RSI, located in North Coventry, volunteered to serve as the drop-off location for the county’s campaign sign
recycling event that was held in November 2024.
Over a two-week period, RSI allowed Keep Chester County Beautiful to use its site, provided volunteers, helped unload and sort all steel and plastic collected from four other collection sites, and arranged for the items to be recycled. It is estimated that RSI collected more than 600 pounds of plastic and more than 4,000 pounds of steel.
The county commissioners presented citations to both honorees at the request of Keep Chester County Beautiful staff members Ryan Mawhinney and Carrie Conwell.

Coast Guard urges people to practice boating safety
In connection with National Safe Boating Week - Saturday to Friday, May 17 to 23 - the Coast Guard urges all Americans to familiarize themselves with best practices for a safe boating experience.
Everyone in the boat should always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket appropriate for the water activity. People should file a float plan with someone they trust; the plan should
detail where boaters are going and when they expect to return.
Those enjoying an outing on a boat should have a reliable means of communication for their area, be it a marine radio or a cell phone. Alcohol is the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, so it is recommended that people do not consume alcohol while boating.
Anyone who would like
to obtain a boat operation certificate or who wants to brush up on his or her skills may consider taking a boating skills course. Local Coast Guard Auxiliary flotillas conduct Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission-approved boating safety courses throughout the year.
People are also encouraged to schedule a vessel safety check. Coast Guard Auxiliary flotillas conduct these checks
free of charge at any time throughout the year.
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard created by an act of Congress in 1939. The Auxiliary supports the Coast Guard in nearly all its missions except law enforcement and military operations. For more information, visit www .cgaux.org.
