Residents of Keystone Villa at Douglassville enjoyed a recent visit from young patrons from the Boone Area Library in Birdsboro, when youth coordinator Amber Hamel brought the Monday story time program to the retirement community.
Not only does story time aim to promote a love of reading for young children, but having the event on-site is a benefit to the residents as well. “They love (the children),” said Kim Haas, resident life director for the personal care facility at Keystone Villa. “When they see kids, they light up. They really enjoy it.”
Hamel has taken the biweekly story time program on the road frequently since her appointment as youth coordinator in January of 2024. She regularly hosts story time programs at the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center at Birdsboro’s Main Bird Park and at the Carousel at Pottstown, where she is a volunteer.
“When I started last year, I reached out to (Keystone Villa) to see if they were interested in collaborating on a story time between the kids and the

residents,” Hamel said of the partnership. “Their program coordinator was very excited to have the kids come to visit with the residents. My goal (is) to engage the library and the kids in different community aspects as much as possible.”
Hamel led the program on March 10 with a song and then read two books to the children and seniors in attendance - “Singing in the Rain” and “Silly Suzy Goose.” The youngsters then took part in a movement and dance activity, and
all attendees got to try their hand at watercolor painting.
Among the participants was Michelle Halter of Birdsboro, who attended the program with Haven Halter, her granddaughter. Michelle said that attending story time parlayed into a volunteer opportunity for both of them.
“Every Thursday they have an activity time (at Keystone Villa). Haven and I come every other Thursday,” said Michelle. “We do board games with them, and last time, they did balloon volleyball and trivia, where we sat around and answered questions. (Haven) can’t answer questions, obviously, but she dances around and entertains them. Her dad, my son, is involved in the community (as the owner of Halter Materials & Landscape Supply), and he encouraged (me to bring her).”
Miss Amber’s Story Time is held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. The program is designed for children up to age 5, but youngsters of all ages are welcome. No registration is required.

Readers who have extra books to share are invited to donate them to the Berks Book Bonanza, an annual sale of gently used books that benefits local charities. DVDs, CDs, games and vinyl records are also accepted. Organizers of the annual event recently announced that donation collection hours will go beyond the previously announced March 11 deadline. Now through Monday, March 31, volunteers will be on
the camp,” said executive director Bryan Levengood.
The program will begin with hors d’oeuvres and a welcome by a Tel Hai board member, followed by the buffet-style meal. The speakers, including relatives of the camp’s founding members, will follow, and Levengood will also provide an address.
“I will share my vision for the future of the camp and where I see us going,” Levengood stated.
Attendance is complimentary, but an offering will be received at the conclusion of the event to help with the cost of the banquet as well as general support of Tel Hai Camp’s ministry.
According to a history of the camp provided at www.telhaicamp.org, the camp was founded in 1950 as an independent, nonprofit, Christian camp. Members of the board of directors were appointed from two local Mennonite churches - Maple Grove and Conestoga.
The board developed a camp
program designed to “encourage the physical, mental and spiritual growth” of urban and local children.
The group purchased a farm north of Beaver Dam Road in Honey Brook, and the camp was started in a farmhouse, located across the road from where Tel Hai Retirement Community is now.
In 1956, the camp was moved to the woods on the south side of the road. In 1996, another 40 acres was added to the east of the camp. In subsequent years, the cabins, the dining hall, the recreational hall and the outdoor chapel were added, as well as other amenities, including a climbing wall, a zip line, a miniature golf course and swimming pool.
While Tel Hai is known for its summer camps, the facility is used year-round as a retreat and meeting place. “Our summer camps run about nine weeks, where we are booked out all week long,” Levengood said. “From September through the end of May is our retreats. They come from all
over - youth groups and men’s and women’s ministry groups. We (even host) a scrapbooking group.”
Levengood added that a canine rescue organization recently utilized the Tel Hai property as a training location for its dogs.
“We actually have a group from the retirement community use our gym to play pickleball during the wintertime,” Levengood added.
Upcoming events include a spring camp for homeschoolers that will offer six weeks of classes starting on Tuesday, April 1. “They learn canoeing and kayaking, and this year we have a Lego (activity),” Levengood pointed out.
Levengood noted that donations received at the banquet will be used to finance the programming costs, adding that the event is open to people associated with the camp, as well as the general public.
“We send information out to former campers, groups that have come here and churches that bring
groups here,” Levengood noted. “People from the community who want to learn about us, know about us and know what’s going on (are also invited to attend).”
For more information about Tel Hai Camp & Retreat, located at 31 Lasso Drive, Honey Brook, and to make a reservation for the banquet, call 610273-3969 or email info@telhaicamp .org. The 2025 Berks Book Bonanza will be held from Wednesday, July 9, through Sunday, July 13. This will be the organization’s second sale at the Mohnton location. Previously, it was held at a temporary location in Berkshire Mall, and prior to that the sale took place at the VF Outlets in Reading.
During the five-day event, about 75,000 books will be available for sale. Fiction selections will be sorted by genre, including mystery, thriller and romance. In the nonfiction category there will be books on history, science, art, health, nature, hobbies and sports, as well as cookbooks and biographies.
The sale will also feature collectible books, which are books published prior to 1960; a large-print section; teacher materials; reference items; and an area reserved for children’s books. Book tables are replenished throughout the sale, so shoppers can attend all five days of the sale to find different titles.
Funds raised from the annual book sale go to the Friends of Berks County Public Libraries and Reading Branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW), which supports the public libraries of Berks County and provides scholarships to women. In December 2024, Berks Book Bonanza distributed a total of $40,000 to the two organizations following last year’s sale in September.
For more information about the book sale, visit the previously mentioned website or www.facebook .com/BCPLFriends.
Those who would like to volunteer may visit www.berksbookbonanza .org/volunteer-information. Volunteers are needed throughout the year to receive, sort and organize donations. Sale-day opportunities are also available. Training is provided.

Good food and fellowship are offered each month during community dinners served at St. Peter United Church of Christ (UCC), located on Route 23 in Knauertown.
Community dinners are typically held on the last Friday of each month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The meal is free, but a collection jar is available so that people can donate a freewill offering.
Community dinners began at St. Peter UCC in October of 2013. The idea was to offer a free meal to those with financial difficulties. Today, the dinners have evolved to serve people of all ages and backgrounds.
“If you can’t afford a meal, come and get one, but that is not its intention (anymore),” stated church member Paul Baringer, who cooks the meal on-site. “It’s meant to be a social event. You can sit down and have dinner and meet some new people.”
While he is not a professional chef, Baringer said he loves to eat and try new foods, as well as prepare food for others. “Our pastor at
the time came up with the concept of doing a community dinner,” explained Baringer. “I have been the chef the whole time.”
Church volunteers help prepare, serve and clean up after the meal. For the dinner on Feb. 28, the menu included London broil, chicken wings, shrimp cocktail, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. There were also assorted homemade desserts including chocolate pudding, rice pudding and brownies, as well as beverages, including coffee, hot tea and lemonade.
“(In March), corned beef and cabbage will be one of the options,” Baringer noted. “For the Easter (community dinner, we will serve) ham and lamb.”
Due to the drought and in order to preserve water, he noted, food is temporarily being served on paper plates since the dishes had to be washed both before and after the meal.
Baringer spends the day of the dinner cooking and preparing the menu, which varies each month. “I am usually here between 12 and 1 p.m.,” he noted. “For Easter with the lamb, and for (the) Thanksgiving (dinner), I am here earlier in the day.”
He noted that during the pandemic, the church did stop serving meals, but it did offer dinners-to-go on select days. “It used to be buffet style, but since COVID, we now serve the meal,” Baringer explained. “You sit down, and someone will come to your table and take your order for you.” About 30 people of all ages attend the meal each month. This includes senior citizens, as well as young families with children. “There are usually some new (attendees) every time,” Baringer stated.
On hand for February’s meal was St. Peter UCC pastor Peter Detterline, who is also an amateur astronomer. Detterline brought a high-powered telescope to the church so that after dinner attendees could view the planet Venus in the night sky.
In addition to the community meal, the church offers an indoor/ outdoor flea market on the second
The next off-site story time will be held on Wednesday, March 19, at the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center, 201 E. Main St., Birdsboro. Youngsters should wear sneakers and bring a water bottle. On Wednesday, March 26, story time will be held at French Creek State Park, 843 Park Road, Elverson. Hamel, along with park ranger Jared Brandt, will lead a “Squirrel Hunt.”
In addition to story time, Hamel oversees Helping Hands Bingo,
which is open to youngsters and senior citizens. Helping Hands Bingo takes place on the first Fridays of each month from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.
The Boone Area Library is located at 129 N. Mill St., Birdsboro. To learn more about story time and other library activities, visit www .facebook.com/boonearealibrary or www.berkslibraries.org/branch/ boone. Those with questions may email Hamel at youthlibrarian @boonelibrary.org.
St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 80 E. Main St., Adamstown, will hold its 74th semiannual Community Outgrown Exchange on Thursday, March 27, from 5 to 8 p.m.; Friday, March 28, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Saturday, March 29, from 8 to 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome.
The free event will offer clothing for people of all ages, shoes, coats, linens, toys, games, books, puzzles, and purses. The number of children’s items available to each shopper may be limited.
The church will accept donations of clean items for the event on Monday, March 24; Wednesday, March 26; and March 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., as well as during the

Saturday of every month from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Setup begins at 6 a.m. A fee is charged per space; no reservations are needed. Breakfast and lunch items are also available for purchase at the flea market.

Registering is free, and once bidding begins, participants will be given updates. “Over the three days, if someone keeps bidding over you, you are notified,” Potrako explained. “It gives you a chance to go back in and bid again.”
She emphasized that the auction site is secure and that people can feel safe bidding on the items they are interested in. “You have complete control over your bidding,” she stated. “No one knows who you are; it is a private virtual auction. We don’t publish the winners.”
Once the auction is concluded, arrangements will be made for the auction winners to receive their items. “You are contacted, and we follow up and make arrangements to deliver or mail the item or have you pick it up,” Potrako noted. “If you are in the area, we coordinate and meet with you at a designated location or the VEP office.”
allows people to donate to the program. “If you are not interested in doing the bidding, there is an opportunity on the bidding site to make a donation,” said Potrako. “That can be of any value, and it’s all for the general fund.”
VEP is always in need of volunteers willing to provide one-onone tutoring for adults looking to improve their English language skills. Tutors also help students understand American culture.
Prospective tutors are invited to attend the next tutor training session, which will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, March 25; Thursday, March 27; and Monday, March 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening.
According to Potrako, the tutor training workshop is designed to fully prepare volunteers to teach English to adult, non-native speakers. Prior teaching experience or fluency in a language other than English is not required.
For more information about the upcoming tutor training workshop and to register, visit www.volunteerenglish.org/tutors/ tutor-training-workshop.

She said that last year’s virtual auction was a success, raising $10,000 for the organization. Proceeds will again be used to fund the VEP program, which provides English language tutoring to adult immigrants and refugees in Chester County.
“(Funds) go to general operations for the program,” noted Potrako. “It provides us the ability to train volunteers and gives us the ability to support adult learners. With that (money), we can purchase online subscriptions that the adults need for learning.”
