Mission Possible Club Brings Comfort to Hospitalized Children

For children, a hospital stay can be a time of fear and anxiety. Helping young patients by providing gifts to help them pass the time is the goal of Mission Possible, a club at Twin Valley High School (TVHS).

Once a month, club members travel to Reading Hospital bearing gift bags filled with items such as coloring books, crayons and small toys, which they distribute to the children.

Inspiration for the club, which began in September of 2023, came from current TVHS senior Emma Hahn, who approached club adviser Michelle Roby, who was the TVHS guidance counselor at the time. “I came up with the idea for the club and approached Dr. Roby with it,

and she jumped right on board,” said Emma. “Her daughter was a

Wagontown Chapel to Host Sportsman’s Event

Wagontown Chapel will present its 20th annual Sportsman’s Event on Saturday, March 21, beginning at 12:30 p.m. The event will feature a display of vendors; snacks; and a talk on hunting by Nate Hosie from HeadHunters TV, who is also a country music singer. Attendees will also have an opportunity to win prizes.

Guests will be able to view displays by a variety of vendors from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. “We will have 15 to 20 vendors this year,” said pastor Tim Crans, a resident of Atglen. “There will be hunting-related vendors, taxidermists, fishing vendors and hunting call vendors. The church will have a table that will have information about our church and our other ministries like archery camps for kids and 3D shoots for adults.”

The community is invited to participate in the fifth annual cleanup of Route 345, a roadway in Elverson that travels through French Creek State Park and Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site. The event, organized by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), will take place on Saturday, March 14, beginning at 9 a.m.

Pheasants Forever, a nonprofit conservation organization, will set up a display, while another vendor will offer framed works of art made with painted turkey feathers. “She paints a deer, a turkey or a bear on the feathers,” said Crans. “One of them will be a door prize.”

While lunch will not be served, an assortment of snacks will be available to enjoy. Among the snacks will be cookies and brownies, as well as chips donated by Herr’s.

Hosie’s presentation will begin at 1:30 p.m. Hosie is from Montdale, where he learned to hunt from his father and grandfather who both began taking

For their Halloween visit, club members dressed in costume and did a reverse trick-or-treat activity, giving out candy to the hospitalized children.

patient in the hospital, and students from Alvernia (University) had left a bag of goodies for her. As soon as I approached her with the idea, she was right on board.”

“My daughter had emergency surgery at age 2. They only had a wagon to entertain her, and these girls from Alvernia showed up with this box, and it was filled with wonderful items like coloring books and crayons and a Barbie (doll),” Roby added. “Ever since that moment, I always wanted to pay it forward. Emma’s goal lined up with mine.”

moms,” Roby added. “The last time we had some adults on the children’s floor - up to age 20 - and they (accepted the gifts as well) - anything to brighten their day.”

There are also special themed visits. For the most recent visit in February, the students gave out Valentine’s Day candy. They also presented the nursing staff with a giant Twix bar. “For Halloween, we do a reverse trick or treat,” Emma noted. “We dress in costume and we give them a pumpkin basket, and we drop candy in their basket one by one.”

Court of Honor Ceremony Honors Three Local Eagle Scouts

Aidan Long, Canaan Toothman and Kevin Bolt were recognized as Eagle Scouts during a Court of Honor ceremony held on Feb. 21 at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown. The Scouts are members of Troop 543 Plowville, which meets at Robeson Lutheran Church.

Berks Trail Works was on hand at the ceremony to thank the Scouts for the trail improvements. He emphasized the connection between community and local trail stewardship, noting that all three Eagle Scouts are members of the TVMTB.

We encourage local nonprofit groups, schools, churches, and others to submit news releases. Roby worked with Dr. Brian Lahmann, a TVHS parent, who helped arrange the visits. “I have to give all the props in the world to Brian Lahmann,” said Roby. “When Emma approached me, Dr. Lahmann just received his promotion (as the physician leader for emergency medicine) at Reading Hospital. He put all of the wheels in motion and had people reach out to me.”

Club members travel by van to the hospital, where most times they are allowed to distribute the goodies to the patients in person. “Each basket includes a coloring book, a stuffed animal and any kind of small things they can use while they’re sitting in bed - cards, little mini board games, mini coloring books and puzzles, stress toys and fidget toys,” said Emma. “We include a handwritten note from members of our club with a little message like ‘Feel better’ or ‘We are thinking of you.’”

“When I was in the hospital with my daughter, I didn’t have a hair tie. So there is a hair tie for the

The Mission Possible Club has between 60 and 80 members, who raise funds to purchase the gift items by operating a snack cart. “We are 100% based on fundraising, and the kids raise the money on their own. I am so proud of them,” Roby stated. “Between 10:30 and 11:15 a.m., we have five kids take two carts throughout the (school) building and sell snacks. We have gluten-free and nut-free options, juice boxes and healthy snacks.”

Emma explained that club members earn the opportunity to take part in the hospital visits. “We do a point system; they earn points to go on visits,” she said. “You can’t just say you are in the club. You have to participate in fundraisers, help make the baskets and the cards and come to meetings.”

Roby is pleased with the success of the outreach. “It’s such a wonderful program,” she said. “(Kids are doing) community service because it feels good in their heart and they are giving back to the community.”

According to www.scout ing.org, Eagle Scout is the highest honor in the Scouts BSA program of Scouting America. Only 4% to 6% of youths involved in Scouting earn the honor, which requires earning more than 21 merit badges, holding leadership positions within the troop and completing a major community service project.

Aidan’s project was creating and installing easy-toread handcrafted signs to help people navigate within the Birdsboro Preserve trail network, including the Twin Valley Mountain Biking (TVMTB) team, of which he is a member, as well as hikers, bikers and others who use the preserve’s trail.

Canaan, who is also a TVMTB member, completed a trail improvement project at the same preserve. He, along with volunteers, cleared overgrown, stabilized sections of the trail and improved drainage.

Kevin’s project was a cleanup and improvement at the courtyard at Robeson Lutheran Church, allowing the church’s preschool students to use the courtyard for outdoor activities and snack time. He organized and led volunteers in pressure washing the patio, walkways and surrounding areas; cleaning out the planter boxes; and planting butterfly bushes and flowers. He also added two child-size picnic tables.

Stephan Kincaid from

State Rep. Mark Gillen presented each Eagle Scout with a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, which read, “Whereas the House of Representatives of Pennsylvania takes great pride in recognizing Canaan, Aidan and Kevin who have displayed steadfast commitment to the ideals and time-honored traditions of Scouting America by attaining the rank of Eagle Scout - an accomplishment of the highest magnitude.”

Other participants included Brian Thorpe, Scoutmaster, who discussed the importance of Scouting; Scot McCaffrey, assistant Scoutmaster, who recited the Eagle obligations; John Wilson, assistant Scoutmaster, who presented Voice of the Eagle; Drew Toothman, who recited the invocation; Shannon Long, committee chair, who provided the welcome; and Chas Andrews, Frontier District Executive for Scouting at Hawk Mountain Council, who encouraged the Scouts to stay connected as they move into their next phase of life. Troop members presented the Colors and the Call to Order and recited the Scout Law and The Scout Oath.

During the Court of Honor ceremony, the mother of each Eagle Scout pinned the Eagle lapel pin on her son. In return, the Eagle Scouts each presented a pin to their parents.

Grow PA Grant Program Opens Applications

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA)

is accepting student applications for the 202627 Grow Pennsylvania Scholarship Grant Program, more commonly known as the Grow PA Grant.

More than 11,000 applications from 162 schools were received for the current 2025-26 program year, and nearly 5,700 recipients were awarded the grant from 131 participating schools.

The Grow PA Grant Program offers grants of up to $5,000 per year for in-state students who attend college in Pennsylvania, pursue a degree in an in-demand occupation, and agree to work in that occupation in Pennsylvania after graduation.

Grant recipients will be required to work in Pennsylvania for 12 months for each year they receive the grant; failure to meet this requirement will result in the grant converting to a loan that must be repaid.

A student can receive a Grow PA Grant for a maximum of four academic years. Current recipients must reapply for the grant for each of those four years.

There are more than 460 eligible programs of study or majors that lead to in-demand occupations

In 2025, CCBF awarded $138,000 in grants to support community-facing programs throughout Chester County. Programs supported by CCBF have included Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania, law-related education for youth programs, elder law education programs, the Charles E. Swope Scholarship and Matching Grant program, Domestic Violence Center of Chester County and the Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County.

Thirteen attorneys from Gawthrop Greenwood have served as CCBF president, including Gawthrop Greenwood partner Patrick McKenna.

A member of the Chester County Bar Association since 2013, Doyle is the organization’s former vice president and chair of the Real Estate Section, Judicial Evaluation Committee and Young Lawyers Division. He formerly served on the board of directors for the Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce and as vice chair of the West Chester Borough Zoning Hearing Board.

With a real estate practice spanning Chester, Montgomery and Delaware counties, Doyle concentrates his practice in

homeowners and condominium association law, real estate transactions and litigation, zoning and land use, buyer/seller disputes and title matters. He serves clients who are involved in the formation, governance and management of condominium and homeowners associations, as well as individuals and businesses who are involved in the buying, selling and development of residential and commercial land. Doyle serves on Pennsylvania’s Legislative Action Committee for the Community Associations Institute (CAI), an international trade association with nearly 40,000 members that is at the forefront of community association law and dedicated to building better communities. In 2023, Doyle was awarded CAI Keystone’s Emerging Leaders Under 40. Doyle has been recognized as a “Top Lawyer” by Main Line Today magazine, as well as a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers, a distinction that only 2.5% of attorneys in Pennsylvania receive. He received his Juris Doctorate from Widener University School of Law and Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Villanova University, where he also studied international relations in Beijing, China.

him out to hunt at the age of 6. His love for hunting grew through the years, and he became known as a skilled turkey and big game hunter. Currently, he co-hosts HeadHunters TV, which airs on the Outdoor Channel, alongside Randy Birdsong.

In addition, Hosie is a country music singer, playing at county fairs, outdoor shows, private events and clubs across the country. He has opened for and shared the stage with wellknown country singers Rhett Akins, Riley Green, Luke Bryan, Travis Tritt, Ted Nugent and others. His songs include “The America I Know,” “The Woods” and “Rocked All Summer Long.”

In his provided biography Hosie stated, “Sometimes I just sit back and think about how blessed I am to hunt for a living, have the opportunity to make music and have a platform to do my best to bring good to this world.”

This will be Hosie’s first appearance at Wagontown Chapel. “We happened to get a guy who hunts and also sings,” said Crans, adding that Hosie plans to sing a few numbers following his talk on hunting.

Door prizes, some of which have been donated by local businesses, will be awarded after the talk. There will be separate prizes for adults and youths.

Attendees will meet in the Shed Road parking lot, located at the intersection of Route 345 and 1028 Shed Road, Douglassville. Volunteers will then be divided into small groups, which will spread out along Route 345 to clean up as much of the roadway as possible.

“We do this cleanup every year usually the first or second week of March,” noted Jared Brandt, DCNR park ranger and environmental education specialist who works at Marsh Creek State Park in Downingtown and French Creek State Park in Elverson. “I usually have a variety of different sections on 345 that we clean. I split the group into smaller groups, and each

Attendees who bring three nonperishable food items will be entered into a separate drawing to win a muzzleloader. The items should be commercially produced products, such as canned meat and soups. No home-preserved items will be accepted. The food will be donated to the church’s food pantry.

Crans, who is an avid hunter himself, noted that many people look forward to the gathering each year.

“It’s an opportunity for us to reach out to the community,” he stated, adding that while the event is predominantly attended by men, organizers also encourage children, youths and women to attend. “This is not a fundraiser for the church. It is an opportunity

to share Jesus Christ with people who may not typically come into church.”

Wagontown Chapel is located at 469 W. Kings Highway, Wagontown. Tickets are only available at www.eventbrite.com by searching for “20th Annual Wagontown Chapel Sportsman’s Event 2026.”

A link to order tickets can be found at www.face book.com/Wagontown ChapelSportsmansEvent. The Facebook page also includes photos of the door prizes and additional information.

Youngsters may participate, but they must be accompanied by an adult. The cleanup is also open to church youth groups and Scout troops with adult supervision. Adults must sign the DCNR waiver that is available at registration.

“It is a good activity for families. If there are small kids, we put them at a spot that has less traffic,” noted Brandt. “(Route) 345 is very busy. We have a ton of rangers and staff members making sure cars are going slow.”

PennDOT will provide gloves, safety vests and

trash bags, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own gear. “We get a bunch of unusual stuff like tires and mattresses, but it’s mostly trash,” noted Brandt. “Usually the people that come out return every year. They are local, but anyone is welcome.”

“It’s a great way to keep the park beautiful and give back to your local community,” he added.
