Robotics Team Qualifies For State Competition By Francine Fulton
Now in its fourth season, the Kardia Robotics team is off to a successful start to the competition season, recently qualifying for the Pennsylvania FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Team state competition, which will be held at Red Lion Area High School in York County on Saturday, Feb. 29, and Sunday, March 1. The team consists of middle and high school students who attend Kardia Learning Center, a Christian homeschool cooperative that meets in Mohnton. During the qualifying tournament, the team also marked a milestone. “For the first time in our history, we were able to come away with the Inspire Award, said coach/mentor Dr. Tim Tam. “The Inspire Award is the top award that FIRST gives out to the team that not only performs well at competitions, but represents what FIRST tries
to embody - collaboration, professionalism and community outreach. It is the award for the best overall team. As part of the competition, FTC teams play a floor game with their robots. Last season, the game was titled Rover Ruckus, and the robots had to collect minerals and place them into the cargo holds of a lunar lander. The task was devised in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. “This year (the game is) SKYSTONE, Tim explained. “The robot is supposed to collect stones or bricks from a construction zone and then ferry them or deliver the stones underneath different level bridges called sky bridges. Once (the robot) brings them over to the other side of the field - called the building site - (it is) supposed to stack the stones into towers or skyscrapers. Tam said the biggest challenge of this year’s See Robotics Team pg 3
