Manheim Barons Football CHRISTMAS CANTATA
St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC), 50 N. Main St., Manheim, will present a Christmas cantata titled “Night of the Father’s Love - the Awe and Mystery of God With Us” on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 9:30 a.m. The public is invited. St. Paul’s UCC’s Chancel Choir and orchestra will perform the cantata, which features original music as well as familiar sounds of the season. On Monday, Dec. 24, St. Paul’s will offer two Christmas Eve candlelight worship services. SPECIAL SERVICE
Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, will host a special service, “Simeon: A Character of Christmas,” on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m. in Hoffer Auditorium. The service will feature Christmas carols, Scripture and refreshments, with the auditorium traditionally decorated with poinsettia plants purchased in honor or memory of loved ones. Chiques Church of the Brethren, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, will host a Christmas Eve service on Monday, Dec. 24, beginning at 6:45 p.m. with an organ prelude. The public is invited. The service will begin at 7 p.m., and it will be an adaptation of the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. The lessons will be interspersed with solos and the singing of Christmas carols and hymns. The first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at King’s College in Cambridge, England, was held on Christmas Eve in 1918. In honor of the 100-year tradition at King’s College, the opening carol will be “Once in David’s Royal City.” Worship will conclude with the lighting of candles and the congregational singing.

Holiday Concert To Benefit MCHS Students By Chelsea Peifer
The Manheim Central High School (MCHS) music department will present its annual holiday concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, in the school auditorium, located at 400 E. Adele Ave., Manheim. Admission is free. The MCHS concert band, orchestra, and concert choir will all perform during the program. Under the direction of John Brackbill, the concert band will present “Sparkling Lights,” “Let the Bells Ring,” “Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head,” and “Joy to the Season.” The orchestra, directed by Shenna Shirk, will perform “All Is Calm,” “Down in Yon Forest,” “The Polar Express Medley,” and “See, Amid the Winter’s Snow.” Members of the choir, led by director Christa Schimitsch, will present “Deck the Hall,” “Bitter for Sweet,” “Jabula
Jesu,” and “Lord, Send Your Spirit.” They will end with “Carol of the Bells” by Mykola Leontovych, a piece in which alumni will be invited to join students on the risers to sing. The holiday concert is a joint effort between the music department, the MCHS Student Council, and the Manheim Rotary Club. Members of Student Council help out at the concert by handing out programs prior to the performance and later distributing collection baskets for donations during intermission. A Rotary representative will speak briefly to the audience at intermission. All of the funds raised through the freewill intermission offering will be divided between two scholarships that are presented by the Manheim Rotary Club each spring. 521 Club To Offer Annual ALCATHON Ruhl’s UMC To Host Free Meal By Ann Mead Ash

A woman waiting for a noontime Easy Does It meeting to start at the 521 Club wants others present to know the significance of the Lancaster County location for recovery-based activities. “This place saves lives,” she said. The 521 Club, which is named for its first home at 521 E. King St., Lancaster, has been a fixture in the county for several decades. Over the years, the club has been in several locations, including Park City, on Harrisburg Pike, and on Dillerville Avenue. Since 1999, it has been located at 2400 Butter Road, Lancaster, offering a place for several daily meetings based on the Alcoholics Anonymous curriculum. On Monday, Dec. 24, the club will hold its annual Christmas Eve ALCATHON. The event will begin at noon on Dec. 24 and run through noon on Tuesday, Dec. 25, to provide amped-up support to those battling substance abuse issues. See 521 Club pg 5
