Supporting Girls and Women With Dignity

Sarah Zeitler wants to get people talking about some of life’s most basic necessities while making sure everyone has access to them.

The Lancaster woman is the local face of I Support the Girls, a national nonprofit that collects bras, underwear and feminine hygiene products for girls and women in need. What began for Zeitler as a simple search for a place to donate gently used bras has grown into a mission she calls both energizing and deeply personal.

“I’m very focused on changing the conversation,” says Zeitler, who has two teenage daughters, ages 14 and 16. “Why don’t we talk about pads and tampons? ... I tell my girls, ‘You don’t have to be embarrassed by this topic.’ I want to help people who don’t have access to products most of us take for granted.”

Collin Goshert is a quick study, a fast learner. The 18-year-old resident of Warwick Township thrives in a nurturing and supportive educational environment.

What Goshert has been able to accomplish in 10 short months is nothing short of amazing.

LCSA Seeks to Put Graduates to Work

Preparing local students to be valuable employees in an ever-changing work climate is not a job for one individual, one group or even one institution. It takes an alliance. It takes a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) alliance. It takes Lancaster County STEM Alliance (LCSA).

“In the business community, there was a lot of talk that students were graduating and needed to be totally trained,” said Lauren Miller, a Manheim Township resident who is the executive director of LCSA. “We saw that the teachers were working their tails off, so there was this disconnect. We needed to be aligned. We didn’t want our talent to grow here and then leave because they didn’t think there were career opportunities here. The business world is changing so much and so quickly that we still need to have these tricky conversations.”

“From my perspective, I didn’t think it was difficult to learn to operate,” said Goshert.

“For some, it’s more challenging. It’s not hard to learn if you have the right teachers and the right support. There’s operating and doing it proficiently; there’s a difference.”

Near the end of June, Goshert took top honors in the heavy equipment operations category at the fifth annual SkillsUSA

Headquartered at 23 E. King St., Lancaster, LCSA is a consortium dedicated to helping Lancaster County students to become workforce ready by the time they graduate from high school. The organization’s 25-member advisory board meets four times each year to brainstorm, analyze data, set goals and implement policies.

“To collectively impact, that’s been the whole purpose of why we exist,” said Miller. “No one person can solve our workforce challenges. That’s where the power happens. We say, ‘Join the movement.’ No one organization has all the resources or

all the answers. We have to be leveraging each other’s strengths.”

Each September LCSA conducts its Workforce 2030 Summit, an annual conference designed to make Lancaster County a work-ready community by 2030. This year, more than 250 educators, business leaders, representatives of nonprofits and community partners attended.

LCSA also engages in grant-giving, programs, projects and learning platforms like apprenticeships, internships, job shadowing, company tours and mentoring.

“To me, the term STEM is all about creative thinking, problem-solving and all the things that make you successful in the workplace,” said Miller. “It’s the Lancaster County STEM Alliance’s belief that all Lancaster County students should be graduating with basic STEM skills. STEM jobs pay well, and the demand for them is growing.”

LCSA is a collaborative network of dozens of local organizations similar to

the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 and the United Way of Lancaster County. LCSA also works closely with the county’s 16 public school districts and 15 non-public schools located in Lancaster County.

“We’re hyper-focused on Lancaster County,” said Miller. “I think the people who are involved with the Lancaster County STEM Alliance are civically minded community leaders who are committed to Lancaster County residents having life-sustaining wages. They want to make Lancaster better. They’re willing to invest their capital and resources to ensure people have jobs that are meaningful.”

In 2024, 23,000 individuals participated in LCSA programs.

“We’ve always needed essential life skills,” said Miller. “But work has become more technology driven. The world of work is no longer factory based, and work has required us to do more thinking. Jobs look very different today.”

Miller and foundation program coordinator Andrew Garner make up LCSA’s two-employee staff, but the organization relies heavily on the contributions of numerous volunteers. LCSA’s work is almost entirely funded through the Steinman Foundation, whose mission is to ensure quality of life for all the citizens of Lancaster County.

“We have a committed group of people who are trying to prepare the workforce of tomorrow,” said Miller. “It’s not just the sole

responsibility of parents or educators to prepare the new generation for work. We all play a critical role in a student’s education. We really need the community to open doors to the education system.”

LCSA was established in 2015. A year later, the organization was recognized nationally as a STEM ecosystem.

“I think a large majority of the community doesn’t even know we exist,” said Miller. “But we have definitely grown quite a bit over the last three years. We’re only as strong as the network of people who are supporting us. There are a lot of ways to get involved in the Lancaster County STEM Alliance.”

Make Time for Lancaster Watch Weekend

Lancaster County has a rich horological history (and for the layperson, that means “having to do with measuring time”). Now that history will be celebrated during the inaugural Lancaster Watch Weekend, happening from Friday, Sept. 26, through Sunday, Sept. 28.

“For most of the 20th century, Lancaster, Pa., was one of the most important watchmaking cities in the world,” said Amanda Okum, events coordinator for the National Watch & Clock Museum in Columbia, one of the organizers of the event. “In Lancaster, home of the Hamilton Watch Co., precision, innovation

and mass production came together to create some of the finest mechanical timepieces ever made. Today, the world-renowned watchmakers and collectors in the county have created an exciting new hub of the wristwatch world.”

Lancaster Watch Weekend is open to everyone, though museum entry fees apply and some of the events require a reservation. Hosted by the National Watch & Clock Museum, Hamilton Watch Boutique, RGM Watch Co. and Brent Miller Jewelers, the three-day program will feature exhibits; horological experiences; guided tours; and presentations that celebrate the past, present and future of

watchmaking.

Events will take place at the National Watch & Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia; the Hamilton Watch Boutique in the historic Bowman building at 149 N. Duke St. in Lancaster; Brent Miller Jewelers at 1600 Manheim Pike in Lancaster; RGM Watch Co., 801 W. Main St., Mount Joy; and Clock Towers Condominiums, 917 Columbia Ave., Lancaster.

National organizations RedBar Group and the Horological Society of New York will also participate in the event, bringing their communities of collectors and watch lovers into the mix.

Championships in Atlanta, Ga. Goshert scored 866.5 out of a possible 1,000 points in 22 judged competitions over two days to best 24 other high school students from 18 states.

Goshert had qualified for the SkillsUSA Championships with a first-place showing at the Heavy Equipment Pennsylvania Skills Competition near Shippensburg on April 2 and 3.

Goshert is currently employed full time as an operator assistant at B.R. Kreider & Son, a paving and excavating contractor located at 63 Kreider Lane, Manheim.

“On that Friday night, (SkillsUSA Championships officials) had an awards ceremony at State Farm Arena,” said Goshert, a 2025 graduate of Warwick High School.

“I was like, ‘Well, I made it to nationals anyway.’ They took us backstage, and when they brought us out on stage, they announced the thirdplace finisher, the second-place finisher and then finally the winner.

I didn’t know I won until then, so that was pretty n erve-racking.”

“I was pretty happy with how I did,” continued Goshert. “There were a couple of tasks I knew I didn’t do so well, and there were others where I was pleasantly surprised.

I couldn’t have done much better than first place.”

At the national event in Atlanta, the competition tested both operating skills proficiency and the knowledge of heavy equipment through written evaluations.

“Heavy equipment is just really big toys that have built the world we live in,” said Goshert. “There’s no one way to operate it. It’s about the instructor showing you how to do it. It’s about how you learn and how you practice it. There’s a lot of hand-eye coordination that goes into it. Some of it is knowing what you’re going to be doing with that machine.”

Goshert spent his entire senior year of high school at the Brownstown Campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, 231 Snyder Road,

Ephrata. Before enrolling in instructor Justin Findley’s class, Goshert had little experience with heavy equipment operations.

“Surprisingly, I had no prior experience,” said Goshert. “Maybe a little with a John Deere riding mower, but nothing as big as I got to run in class or at work.”

“From his first time operating a wheel loader to becoming not only a state champion, but a national champion, Collin showed his determination to be the best that he could,” said Findley. “His hard work has paid off, and as his instructor, I’m very proud of him and his accomplishments.”

Over a period of two months before the competitions, Goshert received some formal instruction from Findley and B.R. Kreider trainers Lawrence Hershey and Heath Kreiser to prepare himself for the event. But when the chips were down, he leaned on the overall skills that he had been developing since last fall.

“I think (the success was a result of) a couple of different things,” said Goshert. “I think having a lot of general knowledge helped. My teacher at CTC (Findley) helped me a ton. I wasn’t into this stuff before I took his class. That helped. Everyone I work with on a daily basis helped me, and our two trainers (Hershey and Kreiser) showed me how to operate equipment. I think it’s better to learn by watching.”

Brethren Disaster Relief Auction

Posted

The 48th annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center and Fairgrounds, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26 and 27, beginning at 9 a.m.

The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided nearly $20 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims and support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding efforts from disasters such as earthquakes in Haiti and tornadoes and floods in Pennsylvania.

Separate auctions will include a main auction, a children’s auction, a quilt auction, a theme basket auction, two silent auctions, a heifer auction, a coin auction, a sporting goods auction, and a pole barn auction. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions taking place at once.

Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A children’s store will offer quality used items at reasonable prices, as well as face painting. A balloon artist will create balloon animals for the children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides and pony rides, the latter of which will be offered for a nominal donation.

Food options will include Amish soft pretzels and doughnuts, a cafeteria, a buffet breakfast, chicken potpie, chicken barbecue, and a food stand. Other auction activities will include an area for arts and crafts and a farmers market with fresh produce and baked goods, including homemade pies.

To find out more about the auction, visit www .brethrenauction.org, call 717-823-2745, or pick up an auction booklet at many local retailers.

Dignity from

back to local women. I also wanted to be sure these bras were going to women in need who were going to use them.”

I Support the Girls began 10 years ago when founder Dana Marlowe started the organization in the Washington, D.C., area. From one donated bra, the organization has grown to more than 40 million products donated over the past decade.

Locally, Zeitler collects donations and works with partners including Second Grace, which supports young single mothers, and River’s Place, a free clothing closet at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim Township. She has also begun reaching out to local doctor’s offices, especially plastic surgeons, to encourage women undergoing breast surgery to donate their gently used bras.

At her job as a product manager at Armstrong, she regularly collects donations. And thanks to I Support the Girls national partnerships with major retailers like Victoria’s Secret, she receives shipments of new bras to distribute.

“I like to make sure

there is diversity in what I’m giving away,” she said. “I want to have everything from sports bras to special occasions, from tween sizes to larger sizes.”

Her work has become a family effort. Her daughters, August and Citizen, pitch in with everything from social media posts to sorting donations. They’ve also joined her at training sessions offered by the national nonprofit, turning the project into a shared mission of empowerment.

This year, Zeitler received a grant to create a permanent collection site in Lancaster. While she’s still searching for the right location, she continues to collect donations at her home and through temporary community partners. This fall, for example, a collection bin will be available at Pocket Books, 903 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, through October.

For Zeitler, the work is about more than just distributing products; it’s about starting conversations that too often remain in the shadows.

“I’m passionate about women’s causes,” she said. “We have very unique needs. Men don’t have to worry about having the right bras to go to work and feel professional or

She notes that her involvement in the project has raised her own awareness about community needs.

“Think about victims of domestic violence,” she said. “The police often collect undergarments as evidence, and these women are sent home without underwear. ... Girls literally miss school because they don’t have the proper hygiene products.”

It’s also important to Zeitler that donations stay in the local area.

“Everything that comes into us, whether it’s money, hygiene products or bras, it all goes right to women and girls right here in Lancaster,” she said. “This is really a boots-on-theground organization, and we are helping right where it’s needed.”
