Farm Show Queen Candidates Sought By Chelsea Peifer
During Emily Witmer’s time as the 2017 Manheim Farm Show Queen, it was not uncommon for children to recognize her or at least stare and excitedly say, “Mommy, look! A queen!” or “It’s a princess!” Witmer said that spending time with the community at the Farm Show itself and interacting with children were some of the highlights of her reign as queen, along with having the opportunity to meet more than 50 other fair queens at the state queen competition in Hershey in January, where she made it into the top five. “I also really enjoyed being able to teach first-, second-, and third-graders in an Agriculture in the
Classroom event. I guess I have a lot of favorites!” shared Witmer. Witmer’s time as queen will come to an end on Monday, Oct. 8, as she passes on the crown to the 2018 Manheim Farm Show Queen. The winning candidate will receive a $1,000 cash prize and will serve as an ambassador for the Farm Show during the week of Monday to Friday, Oct. 8 to 12. Cash prizes will also be awarded to the first, second, third, and fourth runners-up. The contest is open to female residents of Manheim Central School District ages 16 to 20, and no agriculture experience is necessary. Applications may be found in the Farm Show Premium Book or by searching for “Manheim Community Farm Show Queen” on Facebook and clicking on the See Farm Show Queen pg 5

Zion Lutheran Welcomes Pastor By Chelsea Peifer
In June, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Manheim welcomed the Rev. Kate Warn as its new pastor. Warn had been living and serving in both east and west Africa and Asia from 2009 to 2017 - first in Sierra Leone and Lebanon before heading to Rwanda in 2014 to help start Young Adults in Global Mission in Rwanda, a program of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. “I really enjoyed working with young adults,” Warn shared. Young Adults in Global Mission volunteers in Rwanda work closely with congregational, social, and reconciliation ministries of the rapidly growing Lutheran Church of Rwanda. According to Warn, the Lutheran Church in Rwanda has 40 congregations and approximately 5,000 members. It is unique in that it was started by indigenous people rather than missionaries after the 1994 genocide, when Rwandan refugees returned to their nation
The Rev. Kate Warn is the new pastor at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Manheim. from Tanzania having learned about Christianity and Lutheranism. “The church in the United States can learn a lot from our brothers and sisters in Africa about forgiveness and reconciliation and what it means to be faithful in a very difficult environment,” reflected Warn.
