The Pleasant View Retirement Community Auxiliary will sponsor a “Fall Foliage” bus trip on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The trip will include a visit to a gourd farm, lunch and a tour of a tavern and plantation, and visits to a luxury car museum and to a creamery, where attendees may enjoy ice cream. The Lancaster County Bird Club will offer a field trip on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 7 a.m. to Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area. The event, which is free and open to the public, will provide an opportunity to see migrating waterfowl, warblers, flycatchers, thrushes, and other birds. Handmade From The Heart Of Lancaster Arts And Craft Show Set For Sept. 1 And 2 By Chelsea Peifer
Weavers, spinners, painters, glass blowers, woodworkers, photographers, clothing designers, sculptors, potters, quilters, and makers of jewelry, candles, brooms, baskets, cards, iron, and leather crafts are just some of the artisans and craftspersons who will share their talents at the 31st annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. This year’s event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 1 and 2, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. On Saturday, Sept. 15, New Path Community Church will host the second annual Hunt and Gather Sportsmen Dinner in the gymnasium at Mount Calvary Christian School, 629 E. Holly St., Elizabethtown. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. Dinner, which will be a full meal catered by a Mount Joybased barbecue business, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Ohio native Mark Ledford will be the keynote speaker for the evening. One of Ledford’s claims to fame was harvesting a 26-point buck in 2013 that gross scored 222 inches nontypical and net scored 216 inches nontypical. He harvested a double drop tine buck in 2014 and a 150-inch 15-pointer in See Sportsmen Dinner pg 5

Park Elementary School in Columbia is one of nine schools in the Lancaster area that The Edible Classroom has partnered with to develop and sustain learning gardens. Through experiential learning, the nonprofit organization aims to teach children about where food comes from and involve them in the process of planting, tending, and harvesting gardens.

Manheim native George Haldeman will share his experiences during World War II as a refueler of B-29 bombers. Shortly after the attack on Hiroshima, Haldeman refueled the Enola Gay, a B-29 bomber that was involved in the attack. The club meets at St. Anne’s on the last Tuesday of each month except December. All World War II veterans and family members, as well as anyone with an interest in the war, are welcome to attend. For more information, call 717-319-3430.
