“This is a great way to get some new-toyou clothing,” said Kris Gray, describing God’s Clothing Closet. “You don’t have to be ‘needy.’ Everybody is welcome.”
The 25th annual God’s Clothing Closet, featuring free clothing, footwear and accessories for people of all ages, will be held on Friday, Aug. 22, and Saturday, Aug. 23, at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. Friday’s event will be held from 3 to 6:30 p.m. by appointment only. On Saturday, the giveaway will be open from 8 to 11 a.m., and no appointment is necessary. To make an appointment for Friday, call the church office at 717-665-3400 and leave a message if after business hours. Organizers of the event encourage
people to consider reserving a shopping time.
“We want to make sure families who need clothes for kids to go back to school make an appointment for Friday,” Gray shared. “By Saturday, we still have a lot of stuff, but a lot is picked over.”
Along with clothing and accessories, God’s Clothing Closet will feature household goods, including dishes, vases, towels and bedding. A table will be set up featuring free devotional materials and Bibles, and a table of secular books will also be available.

Knowing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is kind of like having insurance. You hope you never have to use it, but there’s a peace of mind associated with knowing it’s there if you ever do.
The act of CPR is also one of the highest forms of respect and empathy that one human being can display for another.
“Because the investment of time and energy that it takes to learn it is very small, everyone should know it,” said Ken Brennan, an emergency medical technician (EMT), a CPR and first aid instructor and the owner of Lancaster CPR. “Everyone knows someone who’s going to need CPR. I think a lot of people feel if they need 911, they’re going to get help in seconds. But that’s not true. If a patient doesn’t survive long enough, emergency medical services can’t do their job.”

Callie Tomblin’s title may be program coordinator for Second Grace, but she’s actually an investment adviser. She’s helping her clients invest in themselves.
“I really believe in the social capital theory, where if people don’t have resources that many of us take for granted, they are kind of behind,” she said. “A lot of the women in our program are in that situation.”
Second Grace pairs young single
mothers - “Graces” - with trained advocates called “Sages.” Each Sage helps a Grace navigate life, whether that’s providing transportation to appointments or getting a Grace connected to community services like food banks or GED classes. Sages might also just spend time with their Grace in a positive way, socializing and offering connection.
There are currently eight women in the Second Grace program, which focuses on women between the ages of 18 and 25, although
Located at 1248 W. Main St., Suite L-1, Ephrata, Lancaster CPR offers instruction in the life-changing and life-altering practices of advanced cardiac support, pediatric advanced life support, first aid and CPR. In association with the American Heart Association, Lancaster CPR primarily trains health care professionals, but it also offers instruction to groups, churches, businesses, organizations and individuals.
“We predominantly provide the training that health care workers need to do their jobs,” said Ken. “They need to be recertified every two years. Obviously, if you work in health care, the odds are much higher that you’re going to use it. Depending on what you

the organization will accept Graces outside of that age range depending on the circumstances.
Tomblin, who is pursuing a master’s degree in social work, said the program coordinator position appealed to her because she wants to make a difference. She came on board in May, and she’s excited about the goals she’s set for herself.
anything I have ever seen before, and I think it’s a program that’s really needed,” said Tomblin, noting that many of the women in the program are completely on their own. “I was telling someone the other day, ‘If I ended up homeless tomorrow, I would have 10 people who would take me in, but these girls don’t have that.’ They don’t have that support system.”
Second Grace began in 2021 when founder Candace Abel was moved to start the organization after volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate and noting that support was lacking for young mothers in the program.

“Because we’re a nonprofit, there is so much we want to achieve, but it’s not always easy,” she shared. “My main goal right now is to get the program a vehicle, because over half of our girls don’t have transportation. Maybe we can teach the girls how to drive and also try to get vehicles for these girls. Not having reliable transportation is a struggle in Lancaster. It’s difficult for these girls to get to jobs or child care without transportation.”
Tomblin’s role also includes applying for grants, which she is currently in the midst of doing as she looks for a donated vehicle.
“This program isn’t like
She compared Second Grace to programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters for the social supports it provides.
“Many of these women are just now entering adult life and the workforce, and they don’t have any help or resources,” she said. “We call them ‘at risk’ because they’re just surviving and trying to get through.”
She’s eager to work alongside the women as they find stability.
“We’re trying to help them with mentorship and anything we can help them with,” she said. “This is not a one-size-fits-all program. We want to ask each person, ‘What do you specifically need?’ and then we try to help them as much as we can.”
“She saw this need, and she believes in this program,” Tomblin said. “She’s the reason this program is so amazing.” Abel founded the program in Mount Joy, but it currently operates out of Community Place on Washington, 105 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown.
It serves women throughout Lancaster County.
Many of the Sages in the program have had personal experiences that help them connect with their Grace.
“A lot of the mentors involved with us have said things like, ‘I had a baby at 17, and I would have loved to have a program like this when I was that age,’” Tomblin remarked.
The organization is always looking for women to serve as mentors or help in any capacity as a volunteer.
“We definitely need Sages, but if someone doesn’t want to be a mentor or they think that’s too much on their plate, we are looking for people who
want to drive or provide child care at our meetings, or if someone is an expert on something, we’d love to have them come in and talk to the girls,” said Tomblin. Women who are interested in becoming Sages may sign up for a training to be held on Saturday, Sept. 27. The comprehensive program will provide background on expectations and responsibilities of the Sages.
After the training, Sages are expected to set aside six to 10 hours a month to meet with their Grace.
“That can look like texting every week, phone calls, getting together to fill out a resume,” Tomblin said. “It can look like a lot of different areas of contact.”
She noted that the program is never lacking for Graces, so the need for mentors is great.
“We really need volunteers,” she said. “This program can help so many people out, and it doesn’t take a lot to make a difference in a Grace’s life.”
For more information on volunteering or details on the upcoming training, visit https://secondgrace .org/mentor, call 717-4350207 or email Tomlin at Callie.secondgrace@gmail .com.
The First Lancaster Accordion Group (FLAG) will meet on Sunday, Aug. 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Zion Church of Millersville, 317 N. George St., Millersville. For additional details, contact Miranda Hoffman at 717-940-4762.
University (EMU) will offer a hands-on drone pilot training program designed to prepare participants for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
The in-person course will cover FAA regulations, airspace navigation, weather effects, drone loading and performance, and communication with air traffic control. Students will also learn how to read aeronautical maps and understand aviation guidelines.
The program will be
led by John Sibole, a local aviation professional with over 50 years of experience, including service as an FAA inspector.
Classes will take place at EMU’s Lancaster campus, located in the Listrak Building at 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz, on Wednesdays, Aug. 27, Sept. 3, and Sept. 10. Participants must attend all sessions.
There is a fee, and space is limited. For more information or to register, visit www.emu.edu/ lancaster/events or call 717-690-8600.
do, you’ll probably use it twice in your life. For the general public, I’d say the odds are one in 100 that you’re going to use it. But when you’re dealing with a large group of people, heart attacks are going to be more common.”
Lancaster CPR offers first aid training at its full classroom facility three days a week. The organization also offers on-site training for corporations or nonprofits.
Typically, Lancaster CPR’s class sizes range from six to 30 individuals.
“Let’s say you find someone on the ground,” said Ken. “The first thing you have to do is make sure it’s safe for you. Then you tap the person on the shoulder, and if they don’t respond, you call for help, get someone to call 911 and try to get an AED (automated external defibrillator). You might check their breathing, and you might check their pulse. If you have to, start doing compressions on their chest, and decide if you want to give breaths.”
“It’s easy to learn,” continued Ken. “What it comes down to is doing compressions on the
chest. If you’re doing something that resembles compressions, the person’s chances are better than zero. If you’re learning the basics of CPR, it only takes a half hour. But not everyone wants to learn to do this.”
One of the keys to successfully administering CPR is immediacy and a sense of urgency.
“There’s a very short window of opportunity, usually two to three minutes when someone goes into cardiac arrest,” said Ken. “The more people who know CPR, the more likely we’re going to be able to save lives. It should take less than 20 seconds to determine if CPR is necessary.”
“Among the general public, about one in 500 people have taken a course,” added Ken. “But if someone has been trained
in CPR in high school, they don’t really know anything now. That’s why it’s important to update it.”
Ken originally started teaching CPR at Lancaster General Hospital. After he left the hospital, he began offering CPR instruction on his own, before he and his wife, Ashley Brennan, founded Lancaster CPR in 2015.
“There was a lot of demand not being met, and that’s sort of how we got started,” said Ken. “I started doing it myself on the side. The classes were relatively successful, and we just went from there. The business success hasn’t changed because we were in the right place, at the right time, at the right location, under the right circumstances.”

The Promise Players will hold auditions at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Sunday, Aug. 24, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. for the group’s fall play, “Casting Swine Before Pearls” by Brian Sylvia. The play will be performed on Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 6 to 9, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 13 to 16.
The play is set in a small rural church, where the leaders are ecstatic when a longtime member leaves his fortune to the congregation. But there is one caveat: They must care for his three prized hogs. Roles are available for three men, two women, and two flexible positions. Although this is a family-friendly production, the roles are best suited for adults and older teens.

Last year, the event served just over 600 shoppers, up more than 160 from the previous year. It takes a village to pull off the event, with volunteers donating hundreds of hours of their time to set up and clean up. Volunteers also receive and sort donations year-round at the church.
Donations are accepted any time in a bin outside the church, but donations will also be received specifically for God’s Clothing Closet beginning on Monday, Aug. 18. Donations may be left under the covered porch at the church, and labeling the bag with the size and type of clothing is helpful.
“We can always use kids’ clothes, especially larger kids’ clothes, as well as maternity clothes and extra-large sizes 2X, 3X and 4X in men’s and women’s clothing,” Gray shared. She encourages people seeking
specific size clothing to make an appointment to shop on Friday.
Any leftover clothing is donated to Jubilee Ministries in Manheim, and last year, some items were given to the drama club at Manheim Central High School. Shoppers at last year’s event also donated six boxes of food for the Manheim Central Food Pantry and $142 in cash to purchase more Bibles.
“This event is a great way to get good, free clothing,” said Barb Dunmire, who helps to organize God’s Clothing Closet. “We even receive donations that still have the tags on them.”
Gray explained that the inspiration for the giveaway came from another service project of the church. For years, church members collected clothing to donate to a mission in Appalachia, but the expense of sending the clothing added
Protecting children starts at home. Secure your firearms to prevent tragedy.
In Lancaster County, firearms are the leading cause of suicide death among children. Nationally, they are the number one cause of pediatric death. Even when warned, children are naturally curious—and that curiosity can be fatal. Studies show that suicide rates are four times higher in homes with firearms. But there’s something you can do: store firearms safely.
• Always keep firearms in a locked safe or lockbox.
• Ensure they are unloaded and secured.
• Store ammunition separately and securely.
• Use cable locks or gun cases to prevent unauthorized access. Want to learn more?

up. When Gray started talking to local families that participated in a meal giveaway at the church, she realized the church could make an impact in its own community.
“This is a way we can be the hands and feet of Jesus
to the community, a way we can serve,” she said. “We feel honored to be able to do it. It’s a joy for our church to do it. We enjoy it, and we love all the people who visit.”

Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, will host “A Night With Anthony Robles: Honoring the Legacy of Robert ‘Bob’ Derr” in the Good Shepherd Chapel on Friday, Aug. 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. NCAA wrestling champion Anthony Robles will speak about his journey and honor longtime wrestling official Bob Derr. Born with only one leg, Robles overcame the odds to win the NCAA’s 125-pound title in 2011, and Bob was the referee who raised Robles’ arm in victory. Bob was known not only for his work as a wrestling coach and referee, but also for leading the Warwick field hockey program to 630 career wins and three state titles. Bob passed away in November 2024.
In addition to Robles’ stories, state Sen. Scott Martin will make a presentation to Kathy Derr honoring Bob’s legacy. Jessica Shellenberger, who was coached by Derr on Warwick’s field hockey team before playing at the University of Michigan and winning a national championship, and Dale Dietrich, who coached Warwick’s junior high wrestling team with Bob for eight years, will also speak.
To purchase tickets for the event, visit https:// wrestlingandperformance .org/anthony-robles/. Proceeds will support the Robert “Bob” Derr Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was established to help ensure that Derr’s legacy continues to make a difference in the lives of youths and athletes in his community.
