Manheim Invited To Play “Shop Local” Game By Ann Mead Ash
The Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce has announced its 2020 summer promotional event. The Shop Local Summer Bingo features local specials and coupons and ending with prizes for participants. The promotion begins on Wednesday, July 15, and it will run through Tuesday, Sept. 15. “We’re really excited about the possibilities,” said Katelyn Haldeman, attorney at Law Office of James Clark and Manheim Chamber of Commerce board member. “We want people to get out safely to support our local businesses.” The promotion is especially important to the area following COVID-19 restrictions, which closed many businesses for a period of time. Haldeman noted that the bingo game encourages area residents to visit businesses they may have seen but never been to. Chamber coordinator Kelly Lauver agreed. “We want people to visit (businesses in Manheim),” Lauver said, pointing out that the area has a “really cool vintage
turntable store” and a two-year-old cafe and bake shop in the Mill 72. Bingo cards may be purchased for a nominal fee at The Shack Restaurant & Mini Golf, 662 S. Oak St., Manheim; Sloan’s Manheim Pharmacy, 73 S. Main St., Manheim; Divine Consign, 37 Market Square, Manheim; and Law Office of James Clark, 15 Market Square, Manheim. Each card will bear the names of 24 area businesses. A representative of each business will stamp the corresponding block on the card when a cardholder visits. It will not be necessary to make a purchase to have the card stamped, but Haldeman noted that participating businesses will offer specials and perks during the promotion. Among these will be expanded hours or contests such as guessing how many candy pieces are in a jar. “At Twin Kiss if you buy one medium cone, you can get a second one free,” said Chamber board member Patty Tompkins, owner of the Tea Kettle Inn. The Chamber members have arranged for a mailbox to be available on the back porch of the
Manheim Borough building, 15 E. High St., Manheim, for participants to deposit completed Shop Local Summer Bingo cards. Following the end of the promotion on Sept. 15, drawings will be held. According to Tompkins, there will be three levels of prizes. Participants who have all the spaces on the card stamped will be eligible for the grand prize. Those who fill out half the card will be eligible for the second prize, and those who fill out five spaces anywhere on the card will be eligible for the third prize. Prizes will be provided by local See Manheim Bingo pg 6
Don Heisey, owner of Heisey’s Jewelry Company, will take part in the Shop Local Summer Bingo event organized by the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce. The promotion, which began on July 15, will offer bingo players a chance to take part in specials and win prizes simply by visiting participating Manheim businesses.
Root’s Opens Flea Market, Plans Changes FIA Provides Medical Care, Food Kathy Yoder, flea market manager and special events coordinator for Root’s Country Market and Auction, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim, had hoped to open a Saturday flea market at the venue in April. COVID-19 restrictions delayed that opening, but now that the county is in the green
phase, flea markets will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the first and third Saturdays of the month through November. Flea market vendors will be located in the field and outside the market grounds. “A lot of vendors wanted a Saturday market,” said Yoder of the addition. “It’s kind of an eclectic flea market.” Yoder noted that there will be See Root s pg 2
Friends In Action International recently partnered with pastors in Bolivia to provide COVID-19 relief to indigenous people groups. Donations are sought and will be used to provide medical treatment and food supplies. Friends In Action (FIA) International, a nonprofit organization located in Middletown, recently partnered with pastors in Bolivia to provide COVID-19 relief to indigenous people groups. Aid has included medical care, medical supplies and food. FIA uses infrastructure projects as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached indigenous people groups. Recent projects aided residents of the hundreds of tiny villages along the coasts of the Amazon
River, which are especially vulnerable to COVID-19. For most of the villagers, their town hospital has only 35 beds and one ventilator and is a multiple-day journey by boat and on foot. Additionally, some villagers travel two days from their remote locations to find medicines such as acetaminophen. FIA’s field leaders, Donna and Gary Ferch, reported that close to 90% of FIA’s coworkers in the area have contracted the virus. One of the pastors participating in the relief See FIA pg 5
