For more than three decades, the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy has rolled through the county, lifting spirits and raising funds for local children battling critical illnesses. The 36th annual event will be held on Saturday, May 10. It will kick off at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. While truck parking and driver registration will run from 6 to 10 a.m., the public is invited to a Family Fest from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The convoy will depart at 1:30 p.m. In the past, the convoy has been held on Mother’s Day, but organizers made the decision to move the event to the day before the holiday in the hopes of improving attendance, enhancing volunteer availability and encouraging more participation
from drivers and wish families.
“Everything else that folks love about the event remains unchanged,” said Lori Dietrich, Make-A-Wish director of development for Lancaster County.
“Anyone can help support granting wishes in the community by making a donation.”
The Family Fest will feature fun for people of all ages, Dietrich shared. Activities will include carnival-style games with prizes, costumed characters, entertainment from a DJ and a community expo.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase
a home-style chicken dinner inside the auction building. Meals will include a barbecued chicken thigh, green beans, cheesy potatoes, a roll and butter, applesauce, a cookie and a drink. Dinners will be available for purchase on the day of the event until sold out.
A dozen food trucks, including The Pretzel Spot Cafe, Mocha Motion Coffee, Philly Cheesesteak Co. On the Roll and Holy Smoked Meats, will also be on-site.
Funds will also be raised through an online auction that will begin on Saturday, May 3, and will conclude at noon on May 10.
“Items include gift cards, experiences, merchandise and more,” Dietrich said, noting that the auction will complement basket giveaways offered on-site at the Family Fest. “All baskets and auction items will be available

There is simply nothing like one-on-one connections, human touch and personal interaction. They can lift spirits and change lives.
Those types of interactions are what Aaron’s Acres is built upon, and collectively they are the driving force behind the local nonprofit’s original program, summer camp.
“We accept participants with
all disabilities,” said Elaine Burnett, who’s been a program director at Aaron’s Acres for 12 years. “Their needs vary, from hand over hand to behavior assistance to emotional and communicative assistance. With 1-on-1 or 1-on-2 staffing, we’re able to meet those needs. We’re able to meet those participants where they’re at. It helps us meet the child where their need is right now.”

Eden Marcott is the daughter of Julie and John Marcott of Mount Joy. She has served as president of Tri-M Music Honor Society during her senior year and treasurer of Thespian Honor Society for two years. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will offer two Photography 101 programs, building on the initial session in February.
The programs will be led by railroad photographer and author Brian Solomon.
The second session will be held on Tuesday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to noon, and it will emphasize technique and the approach to indoor light.
Solomon will use portable stationary lights to illuminate several prominent rolling stock exhibits in order to allow for better photographs. Photo subjects may include the 1838 Philadelphia and Reading Rocket and the Reading Company’s shop switcher No. 1251. The third session will take place on Tuesday, June 10, from 9 to 11 a.m., and it will focus on composition and the approach to outdoor light, weather permitting.
Solomon earned a Bach-
elor of Fine Arts in photographic illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology. He produces a daily blog about railroad photography, and his articles and photography have been printed in many railway magazines. Solomon received the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society’s prestigious Fred A. & Jane R. Stindt Photography Award in 2020 for his lifetime achievements in railroad photography.
Solomon is the author of more than 70 books and writes a monthly travel column and feature articles for Firecrown Media’s Trains Magazine. He is the marketing manager for New Hampshire’s Conway Scenic Railroad, and he lives with his wife in Lancaster County. camp usually has a 1-to-6 or 1-to-8 counselor-to-participant ratio,” Burnett added. “But we’re able to assist and modify concerns right there and now.”
This year’s edition of Aaron’s Acres summer camps will be held over three twoweek sessions - June 16 to 27, July 7 to 18 and July 21 to Aug. 1 - at New Holland Community Pool and Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland. The camps are designed for residents of Lancaster, Lebanon, Berks, Dauphin, Cumberland and Perry counties, ages 5 through 21 with mental, behavioral or emotional disabilities.
Aaron’s Acres offers halfday summer camps from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or fullday summer camps from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Some of the camp activities include games; arts and crafts; swimming; therapeutic music; therapeutic horseback riding; and interactive entertainment like magicians, petting zoos and ventriloquists.
“The goal is to create a traditional summer camp program,” said Burnett. “All participants should have opportunities to enjoy summer camp regardless of their abilities. Everybody should have the opportunity to participate in programs like these. At Aaron’s Acres, we want to provide that for them.”
In 2024, Aaron’s Acres summer camps served 45 participants. But a shortage of seasonal staff counselors created a waiting list for participants.
“We can only accept as many participants as we have staff for,” said Burnett. “The more staff we have, the more participants we can have. Last year, we didn’t have enough staff members to accommodate all the participants every two weeks. We’d like to accept 60 participants every two weeks. We need to hire more staff.”
Staff counselors must be 18 or older, and they are not required to have any specialized training.
“We will do all the training,” said Burnett. “Our counselors are generally made up of college students who are looking to go into special education or becoming social workers. This is an amazing hands-on opportunity for college students.”
Aaron’s Acres, which is located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, was founded in 1998 as a summer camp for 11 participants ages 5 through 9 with disabilities. Today, Aaron’s Acres serves 160 individuals ages 5 through 40 with year-round, recreation-based sports, social and community-service

programs directed by trained, certified staff members.
“It started when a parent came to our executive director (Risa Paskoff) and said, ‘School is over. Now what?’” said Burnett. “So that parent and our executive director started this summer camp. Over the years, we’ve expanded the ages, and we expanded the programs. Then we started a weekend program. Last year, we expanded our programs to include adults.”

Last year’s convoy raised more than $442,000 to support the efforts of Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley.
“The 2025 goal is $500,000,” Dietrich remarked. “Anyone can help support granting wishes in the community by making a donation.”
Since 1990, more than 12,000 trucks have driven in the convoy, and the event has raised close to $10 million, granting wishes to more than 900 children in the Susquehanna Valley.
After the convoy leaves the auto auction, it will proceed along a 26-mile route through Manheim to Elizabethtown and Mount Joy. Many of the trucks will carry wish kids along for the ride.
“There is a quiet zone this year on Cloverleaf Road for
our convoy fans that would appreciate a quieter experience,” Dietrich said.
Drivers can still register to take part in the truck convoy. There is a fee for registering, and fundraising is optional but encouraged.
“We are also still in need of volunteers to assist with the day’s event, including truck parking, working the carnival games, helping at driver registration and more,” Dietrich commented. “It takes nearly 200 volunteers to have a safe and successful truck convoy for all to enjoy.”

the students in the Greenhouse Management course plan, plant, grow and maintain a variety of different plants,” said Weston Longenecker, a senior in the class. “We grow flowers, tomatoes, peppers, other vegetables and herbs. Every aspect is completed by students, and the class is entirely hands-on for the whole semester.”
The course is taught by Seth Kensinger, who initiated a collaboration last year to bring students in the high school’s life skills class into the greenhouse to work alongside Kensinger’s students.
“Working with the life skills students is a great way to connect with them,” Weston said. “Once a week every week, they come down to the greenhouse to help us plant. It is great seeing their faces light up as they walk into the greenhouse.”
Like many of the students in Kensinger’s class, Weston enrolled in the course to gain hands-on experience with plants.
“I took this class because it is a great opportunity to learn and get some firsthand experience on how a greenhouse works,” he said, noting that his classmates all have different roles, ranging from planting seeds to watering. “It helps us understand greenhouses and how they are a key part
in growing food.”
Kensinger covers topics such as planting, marketing and selling plants; basic industry terminology; and pest management practices. Then the students get to work growing a wide variety of items.
“We are growing 59 different types of tomatoes,” Weston shared. “There are beefsteak tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, sauce tomatoes and a lot more. For peppers, there are 31 different types ranging from the sweet bell pepper to the extremely spicy habanero. There are 15 different types of veggies like squashes, broccoli and zucchini. We have 12 types of herbs and 10 types of flowers.”
Proceeds from the plant sale will support future class projects and cover the expenses associated with operating the greenhouse. And while patrons of the sale can pick up future food for their home gardens, they can also enjoy a snack on-site while shopping.
“Come to the sale because our plants were grown locally,” Weston said, “and there is also a hot dog stand in case you get hungry.”
Both cash and credit cards will be accepted at the plant sale. For more information, visit https:// bit.ly/42Uqz0e or search for “Manheim Central High School Greenhouse” on Facebook.
