Manheim Central

She’s ready for her close-up

In March, Manheim Central High School senior Heaven Irish-Fyke had an opportunity to step outside of her comfort zone, and she took it.

She became the first Manheim Central student ever selected to serve as a presenter at the Student Television Network Conference, a gathering of high school students who compete in a variety of broadcast events over the course of several days in Long Beach, Calif.

“Heaven has an amazing camera presence.”

Manheim Central has been attending the conference for 18 years, sending students to all but two of the events since the premiere conference in 2004. Heaven’s teacher, Jon Charles, knew she’d make a great presenter, so he encouraged Heaven to audition earlier this school year. He had been impressed with her work on-camera with Baron Nation Network, the school’s TV station.

“Heaven has an amazing camera presence,” Charles said. “Since the first time she was an anchor on our daily broadcast, I have thought she could have a career on camera. Over the years several adults and students have commented about how well she does on our show. I had a feeling that if we could get her to audition, that she would be selected.”

Heaven was nervous but excited about the chance to take such an active role in the conference. She sent in an audition tape and found out about a month later that she’d been selected.

“I thought, ‘I might as well audition. Maybe I’ll get it, maybe I won’t, but I should try,” she recalled. “I was super excited when I found out I won.”

At the conference, Heaven was one of 16 students chosen to present awards in front of more than 3,000 attendees. “Public speaking is not really something I have done before,” she said. “It was a little nerve wracking, but I was also trying to hype myself up. It was such a unique experience

and who knows when I’d be able to do something like this again?”

Six other Manheim Central students joined Heaven at the conference - Sarah Hondru, Emma Adair, Mikayla Appel, Lexi Wettig, Alyssa Duong and Alyse Haldeman. They were chaperoned by Charles and teacher Mary Nolt. All of the students are part of the Baron Nation Network club and have taken courses in photography, broadcasting and/or film. At the conference, the students

A weekend of fun and fundraising

“This is a full weekend of fun with something for everyone,” said Jen Kosydar, events coordinator for Manheim Christian Day School, describing the school’s Benefit Auction and Family Fun Days.

The 48th annual event will be held on Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27, at the school, 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim. The event will begin on Friday

getaways, PA Family Travel Fair brings people together

Sometimes we try too hard. Sometimes we overthink things. Sometimes the answer is right in front of us.

The PA Family Travel Fair has a unique way of simplifying things. The lively event focuses on recreation, on Pennsylvania, on family.

“Recreation is so important to your well-being,” said Wendy

Royal, organizer of the PA Family Travel Fair and editor of Where & When Pennsylvania. “It’s crucial to your health to check out of your job. It can just be a long weekend. But it’s time with kids too. It’s important for families to spend time together. It’s important to get away and make those memories. You only get 18 summers with your kids.”

Where & When Pennsylvania, will be presented on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a new location, John Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz. The event is free to attend.

“There’s nothing else like this in the state of Pennsylvania,” said Royal. “We call it a travel fair because it’s fun and informative. I’m amazed by how little people

from pg 1

know about things to do in Pennsylvania. I’ve had so many people say to me, ‘Why doesn’t the state do this?’ The state of Pennsylvania tourism office’s job is to bring people in. Our goal with the travel fair is to keep some of those tax dollars here. We’re trying to get people to spend some of their money in our state.”

More than 40 exhibitors will be represented at the PA Family Travel Fair, including visitor’s bureaus, museums, state parks, amusement parks, historical sites and Keystone State destinations. The low-pressure, laid-back atmosphere is enhanced by food trucks, live shows, giveaways, face painting and balloon artists.

In addition to substantial giveaway drawings from exhibitors, Where & When Pennsylvania will be giving away a Potter-Tioga getaway for four. The grand prize includes four nights of lodging at the Penn Wells Lodge; passes to museums, attractions, and tours; food vouchers; and more.

“We cater to our exhibitors,” said Royal. “They’re handing out free information. The cool thing is you get to talk to someone. You get first-hand knowledge and advice

PASR sets Retirement Fair

The Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) will host its annual Retirement Fair on Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Chiques United Methodist Church, 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy. The event is geared for people working in public schools in Pennsylvania who would like information about retirement.

To register before Friday, April 26, call 717-928-4432.

PASR began in 1937 to support retiring school employees as they transitioned from work to retirement. The organization’s activities include assisting members with supplemental health insurance and dental and vision care insurance, providing opportunities for travel both locally and around the world, and aiding school retirees who are unable to care for themselves completely. PASR is not a union.

Lancaster County School Retirees (LCSR), the local chapter of PASR, is one of 70 chapters across the state sharing updates for retirees, providing deals on members’ benefits, and offering social activities. Members also participate in fundraising events for schools and students and receive discounted prices at many local businesses. PASR has supported more than 3,000 members who are unable to leave their residences or

who need special attention in senior living homes.

In the last 12 years, LCSR has raised more than $60,000 for scholarships for high school students across the county. In the last five years, the organization has also raised more than $20,000 to provide grants to school employees to science lab equipment, library materials, musical instruments, physical education equipment, and more. Members volunteer at food and clothing banks, libraries, schools and hospitals, day care centers, and other locations. The organization annually recognizes outstanding school employees who were nominated by local school leaders.

PASR’s offices are located in Mechanicsburg. Beginning in May, school employees may apply for funds for unique school projects costing up to $5,000. The application is available at www.pasr.org. All funds will be awarded to winners in October.

participated in a variety of challenges and competitions, including Crazy 8s, where the whole group had eight hours to plan, film, edit and submit a film. The students competed in several other events at the conference, including action sports editing, vlog, vertical short film and silent film.

Heaven, the daughter of Gary Fyke and Shanna Irish-Fyke of Manheim, said she’ll never forget her experience at the conference, and she’s excited for what the future holds after she graduates from high school this spring. She plans to attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania to study digital marketing.

Her teacher knows she has a bright future.

“As talented as Heaven is in front of the camera, she actually prefers to work behind the scenes, where she is equally as talented with her filming and editing,” Charles said.

At 4 p.m. on April 26, a silent auction will begin. It will run during event hours through noon on April 27. An official welcome ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m., followed by presentations of class projects and special experiences. Each grade will have a project that will be auctioned off, explained Kosydar. These will include the fourth-grade Seed to Sow project, where each student is given money to use toward creating and selling a product in the month leading up to the auction. The product is then auctioned off at the event. Other class projects to be auctioned include children’s picnic tables, a child’s Adirondack-style chair, a pickleball set, photo books and wooden charcuterie boards, all personalized by individual classes. Saturday’s events will kick off at 8:30 a.m. with doughnuts, egg sandwiches, coffee and juice available for purchase. The live auction will begin at 9 a.m., with a variety of items up for grabs. Tools and outdoor items, including hunting, camping and fishing gear as well as lawn and garden equipment, will be featured at 10 a.m. General merchandise and gift certificates will be spotlighted at 11 a.m. Children’s activities, including inflatables, a petting zoo, barrel train rides, face painting and games, will run from 9 to 11 a.m., with the inflatables available until 3 p.m. At 11:15 a.m., a candy launch will be held, and at 12:30 p.m., live entertainment by Jesse Rothacker and Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary will be featured. Also at 12:30 p.m., Mrs. Shelly will lead sports games. A variety of food will be available for purchase all weekend, including Gene Wenger’s hamloaf sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken corn soup, french fries, milkshakes, soft-serve ice cream and homemade baked goods.

from someone who knows. When you’re there, it’s a lot of fun because we involve the kids.”

from pg 2

According to Royal, Pennsylvania is a unique travel destination. “You can’t really compare it

to other states,” said Royal. “The country was born in Pennsylvania. It all started in Philadelphia, and at one point, Pittsburgh was the wild west. So much has happened here. There’s so much history, and there’s so much fun.”

The PA Family Travel Fair was started in 2018 as a way to meet a need for affordable family vaca-

tions. Since then, the need for recreation or for family togetherness hasn’t changed. In fact, if anything, it has grown stronger.

end of the year,” said Royal. “(Family vacations are) a time when we can connect. We encourage families to spend time together and disconnect from technology. There are a lot of fun things to do with the family, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Or you can make it a history trip.”
