Auction and Family Fun Days will benefit school

“Come out to enjoy bidding on lots of great merchandise, delicious food and fun kids’ activities while supporting Christian education,” said Jen Kosydar, events coordinator for Manheim Christian Day School. She invites people to the school’s 49th annual Benefit Auction and Family Fun Days, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, April 25 and 26, at the school, 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim.

The festivities will begin on Friday with a pork barbecue dinner available for dine-in or drive-through pickup from 3:15 to 6:30 p.m. The meal will include Peters’ BBQ pulled pork, a baked potato, applesauce, a pickle, a homemade roll, a dessert and a drink. Advance tickets may be purchased by calling the school at 717-665-4300. Limited meals will be available on the day of the event.

At 4 p.m. on April 25, a silent auction will begin, and it will run through noon on April 26.

Along with the barbecue, the event will feature a variety of food for purchase.

“New this year are various food trucks,” Kosydar shared. “We’ll continue to serve milkshakes and soft-serve ice cream.”

Participating vendors will

include Country Gal Catering, which will serve hamburgers, hot dogs, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, fried pickle spears and fresh-squeezed lemonade; Mill 72 Bake Shop & Café, serving coffee, specialty drinks, baked goods and soup; The Fry Shack, serving egg sandwiches on Saturday morning, chicken tenders and french fries; and Old Road Pretzels, serving soft pretzels and stuffed

pretzels on Saturday only. Friday’s activities will include a welcome ceremony at 6:30 p.m., followed by class projects and special experiences that will be auctioned off beginning at 7 p.m.

Class projects from each grade, including the “Seed to Sow” project completed by fourth-graders, will be featured. For the fourthgrade project, students use a set amount of money to create

and sell a product in the month leading up to the auction. Each product is then auctioned off at the event, Kosydar explained.

Personalized class projects up for auction will include a fire pit, a raised garden bed, a tile birdbath, class photo books, outdoor yard games and charcuterie boards. Special experiences with Manheim Christian Day School staff will also be part of the auction on Friday.

Young stars can set sail in “Steven the Pirate”

Youths ages 10 to 18 are invited to brave the high seas and audition for “Steven the Pirate: The Real Story.”

The musical, based on the song “Steven the Pirate” by local singer-songwriter Steven Courtney, will be performed in Manheim in July.

Auditions will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, in the Millen Room at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.

Written by Steven and Taylor Courtney, the show follows the adventures of the title character, a clever and compassionate pirate captain who, along with his lovable crew, takes on Captain Lemean in a race for a legendary treasure.

“Along the way, Steven uses ingenuity, teamwork and kindness to overcome challenges like tricking rival pirates, solving tricky riddles, dealing with mischievous monkeys and even escaping from a sinking island,” Steven said. “At its heart, the story emphasizes that true treasure is found in friendship, courage and helping others.”

To audition for the musical, students should prepare a short song of their choice -

Plant exchange posted in Lititz

The Lititz Historical Foundation, in conjunction with the Lititz Garden Club, will hold its annual plant exchange on Sunday, April 27, at 1:30 p.m.

The event, which will be held rain or shine, will take place in the Mary Oehme Gardens, located behind the foundation’s museum buildings at 137145 E. Main St., Lititz.

The plants to exchange must be perennials and must have identification tags. Each plant must be placed in a container for transportation.

Upon arrival, each plant owner will receive a ticket for each plant he or she brings. The plants must be placed in categories, including sun, shade, exotic, bulbs, herbs and ground cover.

Seniors of the Month recognized

Alexander “AJ” Hondru and Caleigh Fitzsimmons have been selected as the Seniors of the Month for April at Manheim Central High School. The Women’s Club of Manheim sponsors the Girls of the Month, and the Rotary Club of Manheim sponsors the Boys of the Month. The Seniors of the Month are chosen by the professional staff of the high school based on academic achievement, character, and involvement within the school and community.

AJ, 18, is the son of Stacy and Jason Hondru of Manheim. He plays golf and wrestles for his school. In the most recent golf season, the Manheim Central team won its section, and Alexander was able to play in the individual L-L tournament and secure a spot for districts. AJ has wrestled for nine years.

In the 2023-24 school year, he placed fourth in the Lancaster-Lebanon (L-L) League tournament and then placed fourth in sectionals and moved

on to the districts. This year, AJ placed fourth at the L-L tournament and then placed second at sectionals, ending his wrestling career at districts. Throughout his high school years, he has been listed on the A-B honor roll, and he was recognized for outstanding academic achievement in the L-L League during the wrestling season.

In the community, AJ has volunteered in the Manheim Farm Show and served as a small group leader for his church, Manheim Brethren in Christ, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. AJ helped with Manheim’s youth mat club and its events. AJ plans to attend college to study entrepreneurship and business management.

Caleigh, 17, is the daughter of Sarah Goss and Paul Fitzsimmons of Manheim. She is the

of the Sociedad Honoria Hispánica (Spanish Honor Society). She received the Loretta Heilig Award for exemplary achievement in English. Caleigh has taken dual enrollment courses through Millersville University and is scheduled to graduate early. Outside of the academic realm, Caleigh will be an ambassador for the 2025 Environmental Youth Summit in Washington, D.C., this summer. She volunteers for local conservation efforts and takes courses through Lancaster Conservancy. She is a member of the Manheim Brethren in Christ Church.

After high school, Caleigh plans to travel and volunteer prior to attending college to study wildlife conservation or a related field, with the possibility of minoring or double majoring in writing.

Attendees enjoyed the variety of plants at a previous plant exchange.

Empowering girls and growing leaders

“We’re helping girls get a sense of who they are,” said Laura Pepper, educational institute program coordinator for the Girls’ Leadership Camp. “A camp like this is important because girls don’t have a lot of in-person experiences with an all-around focus and an opportunity to connect their lives to the lives of other girls and get to know them in a meaningful way.”

The camp, which is organized by the PA Masonic Youth Foundation, will be held from Sunday, July 20, through Friday, July 25, at the Patton Campus, 1244 Bainbridge Road, Elizabethtown. It is open to girls ages 10 to 14.

This is the third year for the camp, which evolved from a brainstorming session to promote female leadership.

“We want girls to be able to take the lead in their lives, their community and beyond,” Pepper said.

Each year’s camp has a theme, and this year will be focused on women’s history, with a specific daily emphasis. The first day will highlight female role models throughout history. Day two will spotlight leadership qualities. On day three, girls will discuss connections, friendships and social pressures. Day four will focus on courage and resilience, and the camp will wrap up with sessions on aspirations and goals.

Along with sessions where girls can meet and interact with local leaders such as small business owners, campers will enjoy arts and crafts, including creating tie-dye shirts.

“Girls like to sign each other’s shirt at the end of the week, sort of like signing a yearbook,” Pepper said.

Campers will also have opportunities to use the indoor, heated swimming pool, play games and participate in STEM activities.

Representatives from Samaritan Counseling Center will host mindfulness activities, and campers will learn to make and decorate French pastries with the owner of Elizabethtown-based Valosh Pâtisserie.

More than 40 girls attended the first year’s camp, and while enrollment was down slightly last year, Pepper is optimistic about filling the spaces this year. The camp can accept up to 45 girls, and a few scholarships are available for families in need.

Volunteers are also needed to help with the camp, and people can help out for a day or all week.

About half of the campers return each year, a good sign that the program is making an impact, Pepper said. All of the campers in the past have come from Pennsylvania, but the camp is open to any girls in the age range.

“We want the girls to get to know themselves better and to think about their future,” Pepper stated, noting that the target age

for the campers is intentional. “This is a great age for girls to begin to get a sense of themselves and what direction they want their lives to go in.”

The Pennsylvania Masonic Youth Foundation is headquartered in Elizabethtown. The organization hosts several youth groups for girls, including Job’s Daughters, Rainbow for Girls and the Ruth Mitchell Tucker Girls Youth Department.

The Girls’ Leadership Camp provides opportunities for girls to learn lead -

ership skills, make friends and have fun, Pepper said.

“Our mission is to serve and advance opportunities for youth, as they are our future leaders,” she noted.

“We’re gently allowing girls to experience a lot of different areas, become informed about their own lives and really connect with other girls in person.”

The registration deadline for the camp is Monday, June 30. To learn more or to register, visit https://pmyf.org/ girls-leadership-camp.

BASIS stands for Brothers And Sisters In Support. The 2025 BASIS Breakfast will be held at Yoder’s Restaurant & Buffet, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland, on Saturday, April 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The buffet breakfast is free to attend. Her experience with surgery and chemotherapy inspired her to follow God’s call to begin the Cancer Prayer Support Group in 1991. The purpose of the group, now believed to be the country’s oldest faithbased organization of its kind, was to help grievers experience the closeness of the Lord to the brokenhearted. In April of 1996, Eib became a patient advocate for her oncologist, ministering to his patients for nearly 10 years. Eib calls herself a “passionate encourager, but always a truth-teller.” Eib is also the author of several books. Her first book, “When God & Cancer Meet,” has been published in three languages and sold more than 100,000 copies. Eib lives near Philadelphia with her husband, Ralph, who is a pastor.

about a minute long - that best showcases their vocal talents and personality, he said.

“They do not need to prepare a monologue, but they should be ready to read a few short lines from the script during auditions,” Steven explained. “Our auditions are fun, supportive and encouraging.”

Steven has produced two original shows locally: “When We Climb Trees” in 2024 and “Mystery on the Airwaves” this past February.

“We’ve had fantastic experiences with our community musicals over the past several years,” he commented. “Each has been warmly received by audiences drawing enthusiastic community support. Families often remark how impressed they are by the talent, dedication and teamwork shown by our young performers.”

Rehearsals for “Steven the Pirate” will begin on Tuesday, May 6, and will typically run Tuesday and Thursday evenings throughout the summer up until showtime. A few Sunday afternoon rehearsals will also be scheduled.

Performances of “Steven the Pirate” will be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, and at

2 p.m. on Sunday, July 13.

“This show is truly designed to be a joyful experience, both on stage and off,” Steven said. “Our goal is to create lasting memories, build confidence and foster friendships among cast members and the entire production team. It’s more than just a show - it’s a community experience for everyone involved.”

He hopes any student who is considering auditioning will take the leap.

“This production is full of exciting roles, big and small, and offers plenty of opportunities to shine,” Steven said. “If you love to sing, act, make people laugh, or simply want to try something new, you’ll fit right in. No experience is required - just bring your enthusiasm and creativity!”

Scholarship and tuition waiver programs posted

The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) is accepting student applications for the 2025-26 Grow Pennsylvania Scholarship Grant Program, more commonly known as the Grow PA Grant.

The Grow PA Grant Program was authorized under Act 89 of 2024 to help reverse the trend of young Pennsylvanians seeking education and job opportunities in other states. The program offers grants of up to $5,000 per year for in-state students who attend college in Pennsylvania, pursue a degree in an in-demand occupation, and agree to work in that occupation in Pennsylvania after graduation.

Grant recipients will be

required to work in Pennsylvania for 12 months for each year they receive the grant; failure to meet this requirement will result in the grant’s being converted to a loan that must be repaid.

PHEAA will administer the program for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, working with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry (L&I), the Independent Fiscal Office, and other stakeholders. The application and a list of eligible programs of study or majors can be found at www.pheaa.org/ growpa.

In addition, PHEAA joins Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Educa -

tion (PASSHE) in administering the Grow PA Tuition Waiver Program, which allows eligible nonresident PASSHE students pursuing in-demand occupations to pay tuition at an in-state rate rather than an out-ofstate rate.

Students selected for the Grow PA Tuition Waiver

Program are required to work in Pennsylvania for 12 months of each academic year for which they received a tuition waiver; failure to meet this requirement will result in the tuition waiver’s being converted to a loan that must be repaid.

More information on this program is forthcoming.

Advoz plans trainings

Advoz will offer Introduction to Conflict and Restorative Justice Conferencing Training.

Participants must first attend the introductory “Conflict, Communication and Culture” training on Friday, April 25. The program will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the S. Dale High Leadership Center, 1861 William Penn Way, Lancaster. This training is required to receive a certificate for “Introduction to Conflict and Restorative Justice Conferencing Training,” and participants will need to register for both trainings separately.

Introduction to Conflict and Restorative Justice Conferencing Training will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. via Zoom on Tuesdays, April 29, May 6, and May 13, as well as in person from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 16, and Saturday, May 17. This course includes two to three hours of self-directed learning online in between live sessions.

The course aims to help participants gain restorative

conflict resolution skills and learn to apply them to situations involving youths and adults who are part of the local justice system. Attendees will learn to facilitate healing conversations that seek to address harm, enhance accountability, and develop resilience among young people involved in Advoz’s Restorative Justice Conferencing program. To register for “Conflict, Communication and Culture” by Thursday, April 17, visit https://advoz .charityproud.org/Event Registration/Index/20703. Registration for the rest of the sessions is available at https://advoz .charityproud.org/Event Registration/Index/16040.

This tradition brings people of faith together for a message and an ecumenical worship service, honoring the Christian roots of the YMCA.

The guest speaker will be the Rev. John G. Smith, lead pastor of Lampeter United Methodist Church (UMC) in Lancaster, where he has served for more than eight years.

Smith is a clergy member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church. Originally from Jamaica, he has served in the conference for 24 years, including pastoral appointments at St. Paul’s UMC, now New Creation UMC, in Lancaster; Mount Zion UMC in Akron; and Pocono Lake UMC. Prior to his service in the United Methodist Church, Smith served in the Methodist Church in the Caribbean and the Americas. He holds

theological degrees from the United Theological College of the West Indies, the University of the West Indies, and Christian Theological Seminary, and he completed doctoral studies in pastoral counseling.
