Manheim Community Library, 15 E. High St., will host Marshmallow STEM for children ages 5 to 9 on Monday, Jan. 28, from 4 to 5 p.m. Participants will explore the geometry of building an igloo with just marshmallows and toothpicks, led by schoolteacher Colleen Reiner. Lancaster Mennonite will host open house events at four of its campuses, including Lancaster, Locust Grove, New Danville, and Hershey. The events will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24. Refreshments will be available at 5:30 p.m. A welcome meeting will begin at 6 p.m., followed by tours and activities. The Lancaster County Postcard Club will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 21, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The program for the evening will be member participation using the theme “One of My Favorite Postcards.” The postcard competition will be “A Postcard With the No. 19” or showing 19 items. The Women’s Club of Manheim has announced details of its 2019 Grant Program. The club will award grants of up to $1,000 to nonprofit organizations serving Manheim and the Manheim community. Interested individuals and organizations may find the one-page application for the grants on Facebook by searching for “The Women’s Club of Manheim” or request an application by emailing wcgrants@gmail.com. Grant applications are due on Friday, Feb. 15. Information for submitting the grant application can be found on the application. Winners of the grants will be announced in March. which has been in existence since 1937, is an organization of Manheim women committed to friendship, community service, and civic responsibility. The club is a nonprofit organization that contributes more than $10,000 each year to the Manheim community. Projects and organizations that received funding in the past include the Manheim Community Library Summer Reading Program, Secret Santa gifts for children in the Manheim Central School District, Aaron’s Acres, Manheim Central High School (MCHS) post prom, Manheim Central Food Pantry, scholarships for female seniors at MCHS, Manheim Central Elementary Run for Fitness, Manheim banners, Pleasant View Retirement Community bingo, and activities for residents at The Danner Home.
Fundraiser To Feature Local Cuisine By Chelsea Peifer
Plans are underway for the 11th annual A Taste of Western Lancaster County celebration, to be held on Friday, Feb. 1, at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. The event will run from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Proceeds from the 21-and-older event will benefit the library and the service projects of the Elizabethtown Rotary Club.
The Walk for D.E.S. will hold a designer bag bingo fundraiser on Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The doors will open at 11 a.m., and the event will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance by contacting Nicole Dombroski at 717-808-5252 or ashbrihai@gmail.com or Mark Schantzer at 717-917-1796 or mschantz@ptd.net. Tickets will also be available at the door for a higher fee. All proceeds will benefit the DES Foundation of Lancaster County, which focuses on suicide awareness and prevention.

Women’s Club Announces 2019 Grant Program
Throughout all three levels of the library, attendees may sample appetizers, entrees, soups, salads, side dishes, snacks, desserts, and beverages from local restaurants, vendors, and purveyors serving the greater Elizabethtown area. Organizers Meghan Phillips and Aimee Nelson noted that several participating restaurateurs use the event to test out new recipes and food and beverage combinations that they may be considering adding to their See Fundraiser pg 2

Discovering Roots Around The County Area Resident Traces Lineage Back To 1600s By Chelsea Peifer
Mount Joy resident Dr. James McCollum had always taken an interest in the McCollum side of his family’s lineage. But in 2018, an invitation to be part of a ceremony for the installation of a historical marker at the Kyle-McCollum House in Youngstown, Ohio, sparked a newfound interest in the Kyle line. The Kyle-McCollum homestead was completed in 1813 and became home to Joshua Kyle and his wife, who are McCollum’s great-great-great-grandparents. The couple’s daughter, Hannah Kyle, married Ira McCollum, and the pair inherited the home after Hannah’s parents passed away - establishing it as the McCollum house.
