KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Lampeter-Strasburg School District children who will be age 5 by Sunday, Sept. 1, 2019, are eligible to enter kindergarten for the 2019-20 school year. Registration packets will be mailed in January 2019 and will contain all of the materials needed to attend the Kindergarten Registration Roundup on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019. Promise Players will hold open auditions for the musical comedy “Mobile, Home, Sweet Home” by Pat Cook on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Auditions will take place at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. The production will be held in March. Auditions are open to adults age 18 and older. Auditioners will be asked to read from a script and to sing a one-minute song section of their choice (for which they should bring their own accompanist) or be prepared to sing the first verse of “Amazing Grace.” For details or to make an auditioning appointment, contact Doreen Creighton at dcreightn@epix.net. The Open Door After School Program will open for its first day on Monday, Jan. 7, 2019. Created by members of Lampeter Church of the Brethren (COB), 1900 Lampeter Road, Lampeter, the program will serve LampeterStrasburg (L-S) School District students in sixth and seventh grades on Mondays through Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. Development team leader Hannah Swarr explained that a few years ago, a college intern surveyed the community to find unserved areas of need. The lack of safe alternatives to staying home
alone for younger middle school students was one of the identified issues. Lampeter COB members, wanting to invest in their community, decided to create the Open Door After School Program to fill the gap. Swarr noted that the development team worked with the L-S social worker and looked at other programs in the area while creating the new program. There are similarities with the School Age Child Care (SACC) program offered to elementary school students at L-S. Parents are charged a cost per hour their students spend at Open Door, and the rate is the Lampeter Church of the Brethren members will launch the Open Door After School Program for See Open Door pg 7 sixth- and seventh-graders on Jan. 7, 2019.

Lifetree Café, located at Emmaus Road Café, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, will feature insights from a former felon turned inspirational speaker on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, at 7 p.m. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable setting. The program, titled “Second Chances: From Down and Out to Up and at ‘Em,” will feature the filmed story of author and entrepreneur Weldon Long. A high school dropout and addict, Long was in prison the third time when he decided to change the direction of his life. Admission is free.
