High School technology teacher Todd Garber stated that it’s an annual activity that helps make the district distinct.
L-S celebrated the 30th anniversary of its Holiday Workshop by welcoming approximately 200 third-graders from Hans Herr Elementary School to the high school on Dec. 4 and 5.
“Even during COVID, we missed a year, but then we went back and we did it two weeks in a row and worked with the fifth-graders and the fourth-graders to make sure no one missed the experience,”

Historic Rock Ford is offering visitors an opportunity to party like it’s 1899.
The nationally recognized landmark, located at 881 Rock Ford Road, Lancaster, will host Yuletide tours on Saturday, Dec. 27; Sunday, Dec. 28; and Monday, Dec. 29. Attendees will be able to enter the Edward Hand Mansion at 4, 5, 6 and 7 p.m. on Dec. 27 and Dec. 28 and 2, 3, 4, and 5 p.m. on Dec. 29.
“I think it’s one of our most unique events of the year,” executive director Christina McSherry said. “We do living history events throughout the year, but this particular event always feels very immersive. The house really comes to life, and you really get a feel for what Yuletide celebrations would have been like in the 18th century.”

Willow Street Mennonite Church will hold a live Nativity on Saturday, Dec. 20; Sunday, Dec. 21; and Wednesday, Dec. 24. The event will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street.
Attendees will gather in the church’s multipurpose room. Ushers will be on-site to help guide people. Tickets will be issued, and groups will leave every half hour. There will be carts available to transport visitors who are

The event will be held snow or shine. There is an admission charge. Tickets can be purchased at www.historicrockford.org/ special-events and at the door. “Proceeds directly go back to benefit Rock Ford, both with upkeep and operating as well as our educational programming,” McSherry said.
McSherry asks that visitors begin their tour at the house.
“The way it’s set up is you start at the house and then you go to the barn,” she said. “Tickets are available right where you came in at the back of the house.”
Popcorn, hot dogs, and seasonal goodies such as hot chocolate and cider will be on sale.

Coordinated by the high school technology education department and FFA, the workshop gave the younger students the opportunity to take part in four activities: mass production of gumball machines by using an assembly line, the making of a Pioneer Pride backpack and Christmas tree ornament using various printing and design methods, “Soybean Science” where students were introduced to the

book “My Family’s Soybean Farm” and learned how plants grow, and design and construction of graham cracker houses.
“We’ve experimented with a couple different stations,” said Garber. “Now, we’ve been pretty locked in for the last 10, 15 years of pretty consistently doing the same thing.” The school’s ag department began participating in the Holiday Workshop several years ago. “Our ag teachers do a tremendous job with showing the uses of soy and how it’s used in so many products,” Garber said. “They’ve really helped us out there.”
He said third grade seemed like the ideal age for the program.

“They’re not too old, but yet not too young,” said Garber.
High school students assist the Hans Herr pupils. “This is an experience for third-graders to be in our classrooms to see the labs that we teach in, to see what our students are doing at the high school,” Garber said. “We also try to put a little career twist to it as well. For instance, we’re going to talk about engineering, architecture, construction, and they’re going to engineer, design, and build a graham cracker house, so there is a little bit of a teaching component in it. We see it as valuable, obviously, for the third-graders, but also for our high-schoolers to give back and
to teach and to be leaders.”
Junior Trent Royer and freshman Benny Shehan were two of the high-schoolers who helped the younger students. Both took part in the Holiday Workshop when they were in elementary school. “I totally remember it,” Trent said. “I remember this room. I remember the people I was with. I remember the blue hoodie with a fire design I was wearing. I know the guy who I was with.”
Trent added, “It just made Christmas way more like Christmas. It was a really fun time. It’s just cool to be in 11th grade now, seeing it from a totally different perspective

The concert is free, but a freewill offering will be received to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

This year’s concert marks the 75th anniversary of the chorus. To mark the milestone, the concert will feature nostalgic elements. “Anyone that has any involvement with the chorus has been invited back to sing a few song selections,” said director Kim. Kusnersyk of Strasburg, noting that the chorus includes members from both Lancaster and Chester counties, many of whom are also members of their church choirs.

unable to walk through the live Nativity.
Cookies and hot chocolate will be served. Live Christmas music performed by church congregants, and a children’s activity corner will be set up.
“People can kind of hang out in (the multipurpose room) until they’re called in for their time,” pastor Eric Herr said. “We have two scenes in the church, and then what really makes it special is we walk them outside. We have a nice connection with the farm over here; they’ll walk down and have the field scene with the angels and the shepherds and the innkeeper and then into the barn, where the final barn scene will be with live animals.”
Pastor Joe Sherer will give clos -
ing comments, and everyone will ride back to the church on a wagon. There is no admission fee. Donations will be accepted for Haitians Helping Haitians for Christ, a nonprofit organization that provides food and services to those in Haiti who are in need, Herr said.
Willow Street Mennonite congregants Elage and Betty Estime are involved with the charity.
Elage is from Haiti and has family there. “They have a ministry down there, along with her family that still lives there,” said Herr. “They go down as much as they can. We just really believe in their ministry. They’re really trying to get Haitians to empower Haitians to do the
ministry and the work themselves.”
Herr stated that people who have attended past live Nativity events at the church will see something new. “I think the greatest part of it is just the way it brings it to life, because we hear the same story every year,” he said. “This year’s live Nativity) will come from a different perspective again. Even if you’ve come before, it’ll give you a slightly different taste from (another) biblical person’s perspective. It’s just a way to really make it come alive. I would even say at the end, I’ve noticed different times people are really being moved. In the barn scene, we have a chorus that will

to life,” said McSherry. “The house will be filled with volunteers in period costume, really sort of bringing the activities of an 18th-century Yuletide to life.”
Musicians Faith and Mercy Martin will perform in the gold parlor using a harpsichord and violin. “It will be chamber music from the period, including some traditional carols from Yuletide,” McSherry said.
There will be a new wrinkle added to Yuletide, which Historic Rock Ford has been hosting in its current form for two decades. “We’re going to open up the first floor of our 1780 barn this year for the first time during the Yuletide celebration,” McSherry said. “There will be children’s activities there.
Forbes Road Frolic, which plays early American music, will be performing in there as well, and it’ll be open for concessions. Weather permitting, we have some fire pits and patio lights that’ll be out so that people can enjoy the grounds and the atmosphere.”
There is a reason Historic Rock Ford holds its Christmas get-together after Dec. 25. “Modern Christmas is typically celebrated from Thanksgiving until Christmas, though we push it a little earlier every year,” said McSherry. “In the 18th century, Christmas festivities wouldn’t have started until Dec. 25, and then they would have continued for 12 nights, and that’s where we get the 12 days of Christmas. They would have been celebrating from the 25th

to Jan 6. We place our event in that period. There’s a lot of downtime between Christmas and New Year’s, and you want to keep the holiday going, so it’s nice for visitors in that way, but it also helps us help teach a little bit about what Christmas would have been like in the 18th century.”
Historic Rock Ford is open April through October every year for regular house tours. “Programs typically start in April and go into November,” said McSherry. “During the season, there will be lectures and history events, things like that. We have a lot planned for next year because it’s America 250th anniversary.”
Historic Rock Ford consists of the 1794 General Edward Hand Mansion. Hand was a doctor and George Washington’s adjutant general during the Revolutionary War. “He built this house after the war,” McSherry said. “The house itself is in 90% original condition.”
It is on the National Register of Historic Places and part of the National Building Survey. Historic Rock Ford also consists of the John J. Snyder Jr. Gallery of Early Lancaster County Decorative Arts, which opened in 2021 and features a nationally recognized collection of decorative arts made in Lancaster between 1750 and 1820. The gallery will not be open during

the Yuletide celebration.
“It’s a little bit of a hidden gem back here,” said McSherry. “(Lancaster County Central Park) being around us really helped preserve the landscape and the house, but it also means we’re sort of hidden at times. It’s really nice when folks come out and can really see what we have to offer.”

and helping the third-graders have the same experience, and they’re in the same shoes I (was in). It’s just cool to see.”
Benny also has fond memories. “I went through when I was in third grade,” he said. “My gingerbread house was very messy. It was definitely a fun experience.”
He enjoyed serving as a mentor. “It’s just great to see all the third-graders have fun here and build gingerbread houses, learn about what we do in this class, and Mr. Garber’s a great teacher for this,” Benny said. “He’s well spoken with little kids.”
Emma Gochnauer, a third-grade teacher at Hans Herr, participated in the Holiday Workshop 17 years ago. “This is only my second year coming (as a teacher), but I just feel like it’s so great to be back in the same high school, and just to see familiar faces, and just for
from pg 2
the kids to experience what I got to experience at that age is really awesome,” she said. Gochnauer still possesses some of the items she made. “I still have my gumball machine and my candy machine at home,” she said. “My brother and sister also went to L-S, so we have three of them at my house. And then I also have one of the pictures that we made for graphic design. It was a happy holidays card, and it’s actually my face. ... I feel like some a lot of the stuff that you make, you keep for so many years after, so it’s a really great tradition that they’re still doing it.”
Gochnauer is happy her students get an opportunity to partake in the same activities she did. “It’s amazing,” she said, noting the importance of seeing the high school, talking to the older students, and enjoying activities. “It’s a great chance for them to come and to do something in the

wood tech room that maybe they haven’t had the chance to do.”
The first Holiday Workshop was held in 1996. “Originally the whole concept was our department tech ed is the department that started this and continued to work with it, but there’s no tech ed in the elementary schools,” Garber said. “We wanted to create a tech ed experience for elementary students. Then we decided to make it more of a holiday theme to it. … It’s been fun, just kind of steering the ship with it, but it’s really the teachers and our administration, and the elementary teachers that make it work at this point.”
The teacher stated that the collaboration has been beneficial. “It’s a great opportunity for our high-schoolers as well as the third-graders,” he said.
Bank of Bird-in-Hand, a community-based, full-service bank with approximately $1.725 billion in assets as of Sept. 30, has opened its eighth branch, located at 355 W. Fifth St., Quarryville.
To celebrate the opening, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Nov. 21, attended by members of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and the Southern Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, community leaders, bank leadership and customers.
In addition to Quarryville, Bank of Bird-in-Hand operates branches in Bird-in-Hand, Intercourse, Paradise, Ephrata, Manheim, Schaefferstown and Lykens Valley.

“Our musical selections will (include) old songs that the chorus used to sing throughout the years. We will go retro with the music - songs that people will know,” she added.
“Some of the ladies will wear the outfits we have worn previously over the years.”
The upcoming concert will feature both sacred and secular holiday music. The singers will be accompanied by Christine Smith of Willow Street.
“On the sacred side, we will do the ‘Hallelujah’ Chorus and ‘Mary, Did You Know?’” said Kusnersyk. “On the secular side, there will be ‘White Christmas,’ ‘Sleigh Ride’ and ‘The Christmas Song.’”
The fire hall’s banquet room, where the chorus has been rehearsing for more than 70 years, will be decorated for the concert with poinsettias and greens. The singers will dress formally for the occasion. The men will wear dark suits and red ties, and the ladies will wear black with red scarves.
According to a history of the chorus, the group was founded in 1950 by Martha Jean Moffett and Richard Wright. Wright served as accompanist and business manager for the chorus from 1950 through 2008. In addition to Moffett, the directors over the years have included Sally Breuninger, Jim Zwally, Donald Trostle, Elliott Block, Cliff Behrendt, Earl Pickel and Bill Young.
Over the years, the chorus has presented concerts at local venues, including Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine River Museum. The chorus has sung the national anthem numerous times for the Philadelphia Phillies and Lancaster Stormers.
It also had the distinction of performing several times at the White House during its Christmas tours and at the Kennedy Center. The chorus performed at the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg and at the open house at the governor’s mansion. In the summer, the group performed concerts in Cape May and in Ocean City, N.J.
Kusnersyk, who says that she gets her love of music from her father, was a member of the LanChester Chorus before being named its director more than 20 years ago. “My father was an original member of the chorus in 1950,” she stated.
Kusnersyk also announced that she will retire as director, and that this will the group’s final performance of its Christmas concert. “We had a great run,” she stated. “We sang at fabulous places.”
Light refreshments, including cookies and punch, will be served after the concert. There is no admission fee, but a freewill offering will be received.
Those with questions about the concert may contact Kusnersyk at kkusnersyk@yahoo.com.
