The leaders of Lampeter United Methodist Church (UMC) have a bit of a dilemma on their hands. The issue: Where in the church building at 1101 Village Road, Lampeter, will the burning of a facsimile of the recently paid-off mortgage take place? Several places have been suggested, including in the lobby near the educational wing, the construction of which was funded by the $335,000 mortgage. Although the location is to be determined, the timing has been set: the Rev. Dr. John G. Smith, Lampeter UMC’s senior pastor, is planning for the well-controlled conflagration to be held during the celebration service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. The mortgage was taken out in 2010, when Lampeter UMC completed the second phase of an expansion project that began in the 1990s. The note was scheduled to run for 10 years. “We paid it off early: that’s why we’re excited,” said Tom Brackbill, chair of the Staff-Parish Relations Committee. This is not the first time the church has completed a mortgage early. “We call it the miracle of the first building project,” The congregation of Lampeter UMC will celebrate the early pay-off of its mortgage with a serBrackbill related.
