Jesse Bills began working on plans to connect with families right around the time he was expanding his own.
Bills’ wife, Julia, gave birth to their son, Judah, on Aug. 1, five days after he became the senior pastor at High View Church of God.
Bills had previously served at Pequea Evangelical Congregational Church.
“My wife and I had just felt from the Lord that it was time,” Bills said. “We were at Pequea for four years and just was sensing that it was time. The Lord had kind of released us from there. We wanted to stay in the eastern Lancaster County region but wanted to find just a place that had some more opportunities to reach families and children. When we saw High View was looking for a senior pastor and that they had the preschool, that was what really drew us here.”

Winter is coming.
Two Strasburg churches are combining with Tenfold to help the homeless during the especially dangerous time.
Through October, Wesley United Methodist Church (UMC) and West Willow UMC are collecting money to purchase sleeping bags.

also contributing. Jennifer Gehman, Tenfold’s director of supportive housing, stated, “Tenfold outreach workers canvas Lancaster city and county to find people who are unsheltered, offering support to connect them with services and providing life-sustaining supplies. These efforts are made possible through community partnerships and generous donations.”
The self-guided tour includes a total of five stops located in Wrightsville, Lancaster, Lititz, and Manheim. “You can plan your route, what works best for you to go see the homes, whether that’s from where you live and start or where you’re ending up,” program coordinator Elizabeth Myers said.

Tour site locations will be provided once tickets are purchased. The event will be held rain or shine, but some homeowners may not be able to operate their equipment if the weather is poor.
To buy tickets, go to www .eventbrite.com and search for “Railroad Museum of PA.” The deadline is 1 p.m. on the day of the event. A limited number of paper tickets are available in the museum store.
“Even though you can buy up until the last minute, we recommend trying to buy a little earlier,” said Myers. “That way you can get the list of homes and plan your route and make the full use of the four hours that the tour takes place.”
Each stop on the tour will be unique. “I think it’s been a really nice way for the public to be able to see the creativity of this hobby,” said Myers. “Every layout is a little different, and people are able to see all the different homes and how they
what drew us here. This is just a nice facility to reach families from.”
Despite Bills’ hectic schedule, the transition has been smooth. “It’s been great so far,” he said. “We’re working to make the connection better with the preschool and connect with those families there and invite them into the church with maybe some parenting and marriage seminars coming up in the future and fellowship events that connect with those families. We’re seeing guests and firsttime visitors, and people that have not been here for a little bit since maybe the pandemic have come and been visiting, so it’s been really great start so far.”
Bills plans to start holding family nights in October. “The whole family will be invited, kids, youth, and then their parents to come and have like a time of devotion, snacks, and some fun games, to hang out,” he said. The congregation recently funded a new playground
set. “That was a large investment, and they’re continuing to invest in those types of things to welcome families and just be more welcoming in general,” said Bills.
High View services are held Sundays at 10:15 a.m. “We’ve introduced more of a contemporary style of worship, and that’s been well received,” said Bills. “That doesn’t always go well in churches, but that has been really well received here, and they’ve been open to that. … In the past, they had two services. We would love to get back to that if we continue to grow. Right now, we want to continue to move forward and just continue to reach families, I think is a big priority for us.”
Julia will become more active after Judah gets a bit older. “She has gifts for leading worship and using her skills, so she’ll be throwing that in the future,” Bills said. Bills and the congregation are starting to look a little way down the road.
“In the next year, we will be working through like planning strategically and doing like a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis,” said Bills. “People from the congregation are able to fill out (a questionnaire), and then we kind of pile the data and can create a three-year strategic plan moving forward. That is part of the process. We’re going to be looking through our core values.” Bills expects the congregation to agree to a new mission statement - Helping People Find and Follow Jesus.
Bills, who currently resides in New Holland, grew up in Gap and graduated from Pequea Valley High School in 2009. He sold vehicles for five years. “It was during that time I got my calling to ministry and then went to Evangelical Seminary in Myerstown,” he said. “I just got more involved in my local church as I grew up and grew in my faith, and opportunities were just presented to teach and preach, which is what I really felt called to initially and loved about it. And as that grew and I had more experience, I had this sense from God that He was lead ing me to do that full time. Then others outside of me confirmed that calling and that I had gifts for that.”
Bills worked an intern ship which turned into
his first ministry job at Grace Community Church in Willow Street. “I did a year-long internship there and two years as their discipleship pastor, which was my first role in ministry,” he said. “I was able to learn and grow a lot there, too.”
Bills stated that he plans to remain at High View for a long time. “We were looking for a place that we could grow our family and raise our family with, and we think High View fits that bill so we want to be here for the long term. We really wanted to stay in this eastern Lancaster region, so we don’t see ourselves going anywhere else as the Lord leads.”

In today’s world, saving money is often a top priority for consumers, and bills paid at the gas pump are no exception. Drivers can follow a few simple tips to help save money on gas.
Lighten the load. How much weight is being carted around in a vehicle can directly affect the amount of gas it consumes. Remove any unnecessary items from the trunk or cargo area of a truck or SUV. Consider removing extra accessories, like roof racks or hitches.
Accelerate slowly. Resist the urge to gun it when beginning to move after a stop light or stop sign, as rapid acceleration wastes gas. Press the accelerator pedal gently to increase speed gradually and conserve fuel. Similarly, coast to a stop, rather than slamming on the brakes.
Don’t idle. Turn off the engine if the car will be idling for more than a minute. Modern engines do not need to be warmed up for more than 30 to 60 seconds, even when the weather is cold. Driving will warm up the car faster than idling while parked, provided the car is driven moderately until the temperature gauge shows the car has reached the right temperature.
Consider whether to use air conditioning or put the windows down. While it’s true that the air conditioning will drain fuel when in use, driving with the windows open makes the vehicle less aerodynamic by causing drag. Some experts recommended leaving the windows down during slower city driving and using the air conditioning for higher speeds on the highway.
Keep tires properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires can make a vehicle less efficient by causing more friction between tires and the roadway. Check the PSI rating for the tires and inflate accordingly. Many modern vehicles automatically alert drivers when tires are low on air.
Drive a consistent speed. When driving on the highway, switch to cruise control to maintain a consistent speed. This action can reduce drag, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.
Stick to a maintenance schedule. Maintaining a vehicle by getting routine oil changes, fluid checks and other simple upkeep helps a car or truck run properly, which can help conserve fuel. These are just a few strategies drivers may employ to conserve fuel.
New cars have been costly for quite some time, so motorists may wonder how they can get more mileage out of their existing vehicles. Drivers can take the following steps to keep their existing cars running smoothly for years to come.
• Take care of the timing belt. Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt, which helps to synchronize movements of various components. Owner’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt, but they generally must be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles. Although replacement is required infrequently, drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts. During the early months of the pandemic, many people learned that infrequent
driving can cause a timing belt to fail before it reaches the projected mile marker. Aging drivers should keep this fact in mind if they do not drive as much as they used to.
• Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Popular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to replace their brake fluid every two years. Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major brake work is required.
• Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they burn. For this reason, owners of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often than they would if their vehicles were brand new. These checks also provide a way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.
• Don’t skip maintenance appointments. Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best to keep up with maintenance on any car, especially if the car is older. Routine tune-ups and oil changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul.
The rising cost of new cars may compel people to keep their cars longer than they might have anticipated.
Drivers go to great lengths to ensure that they take good care of what’s under the hood of their vehicles. But it’s equally beneficial to tend to the exterior of a vehicle, including its paint job.
According to Popular Mechanics, oxidation can adversely affect ironbased metals. That can put vehicles in jeopardy and take significant time off their life expectancy. The good news is that rust and other issues that can affect a vehicle’s paint job and appearance are typically avoidable. That should be music to the ears of new vehicle owners, who likely need no reminder of the sizable financial investment required to drive off the lot with a fresh set of wheels. Drivers who want their cars and trucks to maintain their looks over the long haul can consider these simple strategies to protect their paint jobs.
• Make car washes part of your vehicle maintenance routine. Over time, contaminants such as pollen, dust, and pollutants can settle on a vehicle’s exterior, potentially
jeopardizing the paint job. Routine car washes can prevent such damage and help a car look like it was just driven off the lot.
• Wax the exterior of the vehicle. The automotive experts at Carfax report that waxing is a significant and simple way to protect vehicle paint. Carfax notes that certain paste waxes contain mild abrasives that help remove fine scratches from painted surfaces. Wax also can protect paint jobs from fading related to exposure to ultraviolet rays. That’s especially noteworthy for drivers who do not routinely park their cars in a garage.
• Use a car cover. Car covers may or may not be practical for cars that drivers use every day, but they are an effective way to protect a paint job from the elements. Drivers who have a spare car they rarely drive or even those who do not drive their primary vehicle a lot each day can purchase a universal-fit car cover or a premium cover designed specifically for their vehicles. Car covers protect paint jobs from ultraviolet rays and the
Taking care of a vehicle involves more than just maintaining the equipment under the hood. There are a number of steps involved in keeping a car or truck in top form, and that includes regular car washes.
Car washes keep a vehicle shiny and clean, which can help it look good while sitting in the driveway or cruising the highway. However, regular car washes are more than cosmetic.
• Protect from the sun:
A car that is routinely and properly washed and waxed is less vulnerable to damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
• Extend the life of paint: Dirt and debris can build up on the paint surface and eventually lead to scratches and other
elements and may reduce the need for more frequent trips to the car wash.
• Park in the shade, but choose spots wisely. Parking in the shade may protect vehicles from the ultraviolet rays of the sun, but it’s important that drivers pick the right shady spot to park their cars and trucks. A shade tree might seem like a great ally to vehicle owners, but if birds nest or rest in the tree, drivers could be exposing their cars to bird droppings. Bird droppings are high in uric acid, which quickly damage a vehicle’s exterior. Parking directly beneath a tree also might expose the paint job to sap or fallen leaves or berries, each of which can adversely impact vehicle exteriors. If you plan to park in the shade to protect a vehicle’s paint job, ideally choose a spot that is not directly beneath the tree. A well-maintained paint job can improve the appearance and life expectancy of a vehicle, which is something drivers should keep in mind as they hope to get the most out of their automotive investment.
damage. Bird droppings and sap can be corrosive. Washing will help remove grime and protect the paint in the process.
• Preserve the vehicle’s value: Drivers who plan to sell or trade in their vehicles in the future should realize that a well-maintained car can bring in as much as 20% more for above-average condition, according to Kelley Blue Book. Maintaining a clean and shiny vehicle can protect its long-term value.
• Remove salt: Drivers who live near the ocean or in areas where roads are salted in the winter to melt snow may have cars with high salt corrosion rates. Unless it’s washed off frequently, salt can take its toll, leading to damage.
• Improve fuel efficiency: Drivers have felt pain in their wallets at the fuel pump in recent years. Dirty cars may be less aerodynamic and less fuel efficient as a result. Keeping a car clean may improve its fuel efficiency.
• Maintain the interior: Car washes are not only about the exterior. Keeping a clean and tidy interior can help improve the air quality inside of the vehicle and prolong the life of upholstery, mats, and interior components. Car washes should be a routine part of vehicle maintenance. Professional car washes tend to be more eco-friendly than washing a car at home, so drivers are urged to investigate their service plans and features.

incorporate the natural elements of their backyards and their yards with the hobby. Everything is a little different. So even if you go to a home that’s been on the tour before, there’s new elements there, so I think that really resonates with people to be able to go out and see all the creativity the people put into it.”
The Garden Railways Tour is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Railroad Museum, a membership-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works to support the restoration and educational programs at the museum. Go to www.rrmuseumpa.org for more information.
“Members can come to the museum and enjoy our facilities,” Myers said. “Your membership starts from the day that you purchase it, so it’s one year from date of purchase. We have special events. We have a discount in our museum store for members. There’s lots of other great benefits. Our Milepost magazine has lots of railroading
stories and information. It’s a great publication that’s put out here at the museum. There are lots of great reasons to become a member.”
Museum advancement director Deb Reddig stated that “The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania” is home to a world-class collection of about 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a vast research library and archives, a working restoration shop, an immersive education center and programs, a museum store and special events and exhibits.”
Myers added, “We are kind of the crossroads of showing people the past of railroading but also seeing how railroads are still shaping our lives today. It’s a really great thing about our museum. Probably 30 years from now, there are maybe some pieces of railroading equipment that you’re riding today on Amtrak or something you’ve seen like Norfolk Southern coming through your
neighborhood that might be here at the museum in 30 years. Railroading is still ongoing. It has shaped our country from its origins through to today. So being able to kind of merge the present into the past is a really intriguing thing
The museum is proud of the fact it offers an opportunity for the public to enjoy hands-on experiences. “One thing we always talk about here at the museum is how fortunate we are that our visitors can get such a close interaction with
history,” she said. “A lot of times when you go to other kinds of museums, the pieces are a little too fragile for people to interact with in the way that we can hear. We try and get volunteers out into some of our pieces so you can go into the cab of a locomotive. You can sit on the seat of a historic passenger car. You can go in a caboose that was used in the 1930s and experienced what that was like. We’re able to give people a little bit closer view of history. We really value that we’re able to do that for our guests.”
